Sad to say, I had a difficult time finishing. I wanted to like this book so much, but really, the story meandered all over the place and frankly, none of it was interesting. The author could have used a good thesauruses and perhaps come up with another word for 'fat' to describe most all of the women. As well, he had women constantly being the fragile stereotypes bursting into tears all the time. I realize the book was published 60 years ago when sexism was prevalent, but I found it hard to relate to the way the author categorized and described women. Other than that, perhaps I missed the part where it said why Leslie had the breakdown. That was the only reason I read to the end. A lot of telling and not much showing made it tedious as well.

Noah Gordon does it again!

A lesson on being Jewish and an enlightenment on being a rabbi. Wonderfully written! Take the time to get to know them both.

I had never heard of Noah Gordon, and learned of him from his obituary. I read his trilogy and thought it was excellent, so I tried this book The Rabbi. My opinion is that it is not nearly as good as the trilogy books. 90% of the book is a character portrait of this rabbi, and I found it shallow, lacking the richness one would expect in a character who devotes his life to thought, morality, tradition, and peoplehood. Most of what was 'Jewish' in this book was on the tribal aspect of Jewish peoplehood. Important characters and events get inserted and dropped without follow-through. I felt this way all the way through reading the book and kept going, waiting for the good part. There wasn't one.
Noah Gordon is a talented writer, and the writing craft is good. So not a total loss.

His other books are so much better. This was a good enough read but after reading The Physician and The last Jew this lacked depth. Still an enjoyable read.
