Es el primer libro que leo del autor, conocido, sobre todo por el anterior El medico, que no he leído pero fue llevado al cine y todo el mundo habla bien de el, aunque creo que forma una trilogía con Chaman y un tercero que no recuerdo.
El libro es interesante. bien escrito y cuenta la vida de un rabino en USA, que a veces parece mas interesado en su peculio personal que en el mensaje, teóricamente evangélico de su papel.
Se casa con una no judía, hija de un clérigo protestante, convertida al judaísmo, lo que hace su papel un tanto peculiar entre la propia comunidad judía.
La lectura es un poco chocante, porque en mi mentalidad e ignorancia católica, puedes pensar que el rabino es un sacerdote a nuestro estilo y tiene voto de castidad. Aquí no, el rabino puede casarse, tener su familia , como cualquier otro y eso hace que el principio de la lectura te choque un poco. La novela es una historia de amor, ademas, que llevan los dos bastante bien, pero al final parece que ella tiene algún problema que parece haberles separado. El final es un poco raro porque no queda claro, si ella ha desaparecido, se ha muerto o se ha escapado de casa para una temporada.

Ein gutes Buch über einen Rabbi anfangs/mitte 20.Jahrhunderts. Einblicke über das Judentum erhält man zwar viel besser in Noah Gordons „Der Medicus“, aber der Werdegang des Rabbis, seine Begegnungen, Konfrontationen sowie die Gründung einer Familie mit einer Christin werden, ohne aufkommende Längen in der Geschichte, stets unterhaltsam und interessant erzählt.

Even taking the passage of time and custom into account, Mr Gordon really cannot write women at all.
Which is a shame. But the rest of the book is a very good look at Jewish life in america...level of devotion, what a synagogue means to its members, what the life of a rabbi is really like. It's also a pretty honest, unvarnished look at how converts are seen and treated.
I can't see this being interesting to anyone but a Jew...but I could be off-base! Read if you're a Gordon fan.
