اگه دنبال کتابی هستید که نویسنده در 400 صفحه شمارو مسخره کنه و بعد از تمام شدندکتاب بنشینید و حرص بخورید، کتاب خوبی رو انتخاب کردید!

ایده ی داستان شاید فقط به درد فیلم‌نامه شدن میخوره و ماجرای عشقی داستان و حتی ماجرای جنگی بسیار آبکی و وحوصله‌سربره.

ربطَ المحقق الأدبي مايكل موهر حادثة انتحار الكاتب الأمريكي ارنست همنجواي بمقتل آجنيس فون كورفيسكي، أو آجي كما يدعوها كاتبنا، والتي كانت حبيبته وملهمته في روايته الجميلة (وداع للسلاح).

فحين تطوع همنجواي في الحرب، نفذ من الموت بأعجوبة إثر سقوط قنبلة بجانب سيارة الإسعاف الموكل بقيادتها، قضى بعدها فترة علاجه في مستشفى ميلانو تحت رعاية مواطنته الممرضة آجي، تطورت مشاعر كل منهما فهاما ببعضهما حتى انتقلت آجي إلى مستشفى فلورنسا، وبعد فترة من تبادل الرسائل كفّتْ آجي فجأة عن الكتابة لهمنجواي في الفترة التي وافقت شفائه ووجوب عودته إلى أمريكا، وعبثاً حاول إيجادها فعاد محمّلاً بفيض المشاعر والذكريات عن هذه المرحلة من حياته .


وحين نُشرت (وداع للسلاح)، كتبت آجي أخيراً إلى همنجواي تثني على روايته وتعاتبه على إفشاء بعض التفاصيل الخاصة، وقالت فيما قالته:
أنا لست الفتاة الطيبة التي تظنها، فلكل إنسان عيوبه، لم أكن أريد أن تُشوَّه صورتي في عينيك اذا تزوجتني، فمن المؤكد كنت ستعرف كل شيء، وكنت ستكرهني، وهذا ما لم أكن أستطيع تصوره، آرني يكرهني!؟ إن الموت أهون عليّ من ذلك ..


واهتدى همنجواي عن طريق ختم الرسالة إلى حبيبته الضائعة، فرحل إليها إلى نابولي ليجد أنها تزوجت من دوق إيطالي، فاستقبلاه في منزلهما بحفاوة لما كان لهمنجواي من اسم أدبي لامع، وفي أثناء حفل رائع تواجد فيه همنجواي مع آجي في قاعة الرقص والدوق وأصدقائه في الحديقة، سُمع فجأة دوي طلق ناري، وشُوهد همنجواي يعدو صارخاً : رباه! لماذا!

عُثر على آجي برصاصة في الرأس سلبتها الحياة لكن لم يتم العثور على المسدس، والغريب أن تحقيقات الشُرطة قد أوقفت بسبب نفوذ الدوق كراتشيللو .


وبعد انتحار همنجواي، عثر أحد القراء في المكتبة العامة على ورقة بخط همنجواي مؤرخة في اليوم السابق لانتحاره، كُتب فيها:
لم أعد أحتمل، إنها تلاحقني ليل نهار، في عينيها الجميلتين نظرة عتاب مروعة، لم تكن خائفة مني، كم كنت نذلاً!، لكنني لم أكن أقصد يا آجي ..


يخمن موهر أن زوجة همنجواي أو خادمه قاما بإخفاء الورقة في أحد الكتب لحظة اكتشافها، وبانتحار همنجواي وموت آجي، أخذا سرهما الصغير معهما إلى القبر، ولا يبقى لنا كقراء سوى التمتع بذكريات همنجواي عن الحب و فلسفته عن الحياة، وروايته المستوحاة من قصة حب حية وخالدة .

وداع با اسلحه نوشته ارنست همینگوی ، نویسنده مشهور آمریکایی ، اثری ایست عاشقانه و البته ضد جنگ . اما ضد جنگ بودن آن به اندازه ای کم رنگ و بی فروغ است که ممکن است خواننده آنرا هدف و یا موضوع اصلی کتاب نداند .
داستان کتاب در شمال ایتالیا می گذرد ، جایی که ارتش ایتالیا تنها در برابر امپراتوری اتریش – مجارستان و آلمان می جنگد . قهرمان کتاب فردریک هنری ، افسری آمریکایی ایست که احتمالا داوطلبانه به ارتش ایتالیا پیوسته است ، او در دل جنگ عاشق یک پرستار انگلیسی می شود.
توصیفات همینگوی غالبا مربوط به شمال ایتالیا و یا جنوب سوییس می شود ، مناطقی که اگر چه در حالت جنگی ایست اما طبیعت زیبا و نفسگیر ایتالیا زیبایی ها و دلربایی های خود را هنوز حفظ کرده است ، نویسنده نگاهی توریستی به ایتالیای جنگ زده دارد ، در هر نقطه ای جنگلی ایست و رودخانه ای جاری ، آسمان آبی ایست و اگر هم ابری باشد بارانی زیبا و رمانتیک می بارد و خبری از گازهای سمی رایج در جنگ اول یا زمین شخم خورده بر اثر بمباران نیست .
قهرمانان کتاب وداع با اسلحه هم مانند توریستهایی آمریکایی و انگلیسی می مانند که با جیبی سرشار از لیره ( واحد پول ایتالیا ) گویا تفریح یا ماه عسل خود را در ایتالیا سپری می کنند . اوقات آنها در هتل های لوکس و رستوران های گران قیمت بیشتر می گذرد ، شرابهای اعلا و ناب ایتالیایی می نوشند و البته آقای هنری بالاخره سری هم به جبهه می زند .
همینگوی البته با استادی تمام عقب نشینی ایتالیایی ها را در نبرد کاپورتو به تصویر کشیده ، نه تنها سربازان یا غیر نظامی ها یا حیوانات اهلی ، بلکه یک کشور و یک سرزمین با تمام متعلقاتش خود را دارد عقب می کشد . در دل این هرج و مرج عظیم است که هنری در می یابد دیگر جنگ برای او کافیست ، دیگر نمی خواهد بجنگد .
کتاب وداع با اسلحه در قیاس با کتابهای دیگر ضد جنگ مانند  به امید دیدار در آن دنیا  نوشته پی یر لومتر و یا کتاب شاخص و جریان ساز نورمن میلر  برهنه ها و مرده ها  که حقایق نفرت آور جنگ را بی پرده و رُک فاش می کنند بدون شک جایگاه پایین تری دارد ، گویا نویسنده به هر دلیلی عشق را به جنگ ترجیح داده است ، نتیجه آنکه اهریمن جنگ تقریبا در کتاب حضوری ندارد .
پایان کتاب را هم تقریبا می توان پیش بینی کرد ، اما شاید نتوان بلایی که به سر قهرمانان کتاب می آید را به شکل مستقیم به جنگ نسبت داد ، گویی جنگ تنها حضوری کوتاه داشته و به آرایش صحنه داستان کمک کرده است . برخی از کاراکترها در میانه داستان رها شده اند و اصولا دلیل وجودشان در داستان مشخص نیست .
کتاب وداع با اسلحه کاری با فلسفه زندگی و جنگ ندارد ، همینگوی تنها داستان آدمهایی را گفته که در دل جنگ می خواهند زنده بمانند و عشق بورزند .

Remarkably,Hemingway wrote the ending thirty nine times to have it conclude to his satisfaction.The ending,without giving away any spoilers,was the best part of the book for me.

As for the rest of the book,it didn't quiet have the impact I was expecting,considering that it deals with the horrors of World War I.That has a fair bit to do with Hemingway's stilted writing style.There is no comparison with All Quiet on the Western Front,or Paths of Glory.

A Farewell to Arms works better as a love story,however.I was moved by the ending and Hemingway's 39 attempts to get it right,worked.

The 1957 film based on this book,with Rock Hudson in the lead role is pretty good.It can be seen on youtube.

از ویژگی های برجسته کتاب توصیف حوادث جنگ تلاش های سربازان برای انجام ماموریت که با توجه به حضور نویسنده در جبهه های جنگ جهانی باعث واقعی تر شدن اونها شده و در نهایت در بین همه کشاکش های جنگ داستان یک عشق بی مانند

I have put off reviewing this book because I didn't know exactly what to say. Looking over my "Year in Books" on Goodreads I noticed that while I gave this 4 stars Mason & Dixon only got 3. Was this book really a whole star better than Pychon's quinteseintial American novel?
No, I don't believe so. But I do believe that this book is worthy of 4 stars and that M&D only gained 3 in my reading.
They are different and maybe this star system is flawed because it treats every book the same. There is no standard to say that 3 stars means this and 4 means that. Would I read this book again? Most likely not. Would I read M&D again? I most definitely will.
So with all that out of the way let's talk about this book.
Going into it I suffered from 2 types of blindness.
1. I knew nothing about World War 1. Sure I studied it in school 20+ years ago but since then I have not researched any of it. After reading this book the war remains vague. I have no will to research it further. I think this is a good thing though as Hemingway's war could have been any war and the things he discusses are easily transferable.
2. I suffered from, and still partially do, Hemingway Blindness. This is the type of blindness that permeates all of his work. It is Hemingway, it has to be good. More than any other writer of his generation Hemingway has built up a legend surrounding both him and his work that is tough to get past. He wrote about a different time, A time when men were men and tough guys who fought were the true heroes. Hemingway didn't mix words or use flowery language he told it like it is.
It don't think this image of Hemingway will ever change for me. Although, I did notice a few cracks in his mirror. There was some sloppy writing here. There were some views that went against the definition of what a "real man" is.
Perhaps Hemingway was not what the world has made him out to be?
I'll have to read more of his writing to make a final call on that. Not this book again though.
I understand that I have yet to really talk about the plot or the characters of this book but what can I say? There is a war. Some people die. Others live. The narrator (Henry) doesn't really stop to consider death too much until he does.

The old joke proves itself upon reading.

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?

A (Hemingway): To die. In the rain.

This book is incredible. I completely understand why it is a classic. Hemingway is a masterful writer. There is so much to absolutely love about this novel. Hemingway paints the landscape and setting like a painter. Each setting is so beautifully and carefully described, recalling such detail. The humor and wit involved had me laughing aloud. He so articulately characterizes and ascribes characteristics to those within his novel. You can feel the personalities and love them as he must have in creating them. They are so alive and vibrant! They have characteristics and personalities we would typically think of per their nationalities. The war is seen as an absolute absurdity from any way you look at it, but he does not go over the top in driving this point home. There is so much else layered within this book. Yes, war is ridiculous. The whole endeavor is ridiculous. Who will win? The country that figures this out last. And the love story.. is to die for!!! It is so crazy at the outset, so real, so tender... so tragic. It has to be one of my favorite literary romances of all time.

This fictional novel is told in first person. Frederic Henry is an American studying architecture in Rome when World War I breaks out. He enlists in the Italian army as an ambulance driver, prior to America even entering the war. This mirrors Hemingway’s life in that he too volunteered to be an ambulance driver in the Italian army, years prior to America’s entrance into the war. In the novel, Lieutenant Henry develops close friendships with Rinaldi, an Italian surgeon, and a nameless priest. It is through Rinaldi that Henry meets Catherine Barkley, with whom he falls in love. The war is ensuing with Austria and Germany. The officers of Italian army at the beginning of the novel seem to be enjoying drink and brothels. Henry even develops jaundice during a prolonged hospitalized for a wound to his knee. Alcoholic hepatitis? Possibly. However, as war progresses, the men become demoralized. There is not enough food. They cannot stay dry. They might even be shot by their own army. Lieutenant Henry must navigate his men away from harm during the German attack on Caporetto. In case you have not read this novel and plan to, I will say no more.. as I do not want to ruin the novel for anyone.

I listened to the audible version read by John Slattery which I highly recommend. I know prior to this novel being originally published, the profanity was removed. However, in this audio version it seemed like there were gaps where the profanity should have been. I would have preferred to have listened to or read the unedited version. What an amazing book detailing a very important point in history, as well as an incredible love story.

This was read as part of Book Riot’s reading challenge as a book that has been banned or frequently challenged in the United States. It has been frequently challenged as a “sex novel” and due to “language and sexual references in the book.” This book was banned in Italy, in 1929 until 1948, by the fascist regime in part for its description of the retreat from Caporetto and in part for its anti-militarism. It was also banned in Boston at that time. It was burned in Germany in 1933 by the Nazis as it was felt to be anti-war as they were trying to drum up support. It was also banned in Ireland in 1939.

تنم داغ و کرخت است و نفسم سنگین بالا می‌آید. این حالی است که هربار پس از پایان وداع با اسلحه به سراغم می‌آید و بیشتر با روحم می‌آمیزد.
همیشه به فردریک هنری در وداع با اسلحه فکر می‌کنم.
انگار کنارش بودم زمانی که با چاقوی جیبی برزنت را پاره کرد و در سرما درون واگنی پرید و در خود جمع شد. از درون دلتنگ و تنها بود و در آن تاریکی به کاترین فکر می‌کرد. آن تنهایی، آن انزجار از بودن، آن تماشای وجدان از دست رفته هنگام دیدن سوختن کنده‌ی درخت و کاری نکردن و آن سکوت و کم حرفی از ناچاری را هربار بیش از پیش درک نموده‌ام.
کاترین داشت می‌مرد و او عصبی و کم حرف‌تر از هر زمانی شده بود. می‌میری و نمی‌دانی موضوع چه بوده است. یک بار در اردوگاه کنده‌ای را آتش زده و کنده پر از مورچه بود. همین که شروع به سوختن کرد، انبوه مورچه‌ها بیرون ریختند. اول به طرف وسط رفتند که آتش می‌سوخت، بعد برگشتند و به ته کنده فرار کردند. توی آتش می‌افتادند، بعضی‌ها مثل هنری در می‌رفتند، بعضی‌ها سوخته و له بودند. آن موقع فکر کرده بود گویی آخر دنیا است و فرصت خوبی است که تبدیل به مسیح بشود و کنده را از آتش بیرون بکشد اما هیچ کار نکرد. لحظه‌ای که ایمان داشت کاترین خواهد مرد ته دلش خالی شده بود. به خدا التماس می‌کرد نذار بمیره. خدا را صدا می‌زد و وعده می‌داد اگر کاترین نمیرد هر کاری برای خدا خواهد کرد. وداع با اسلحه هربار که خوانده می‌شود شمایل روایتی جاودانه‌تر را به خود می‌گیرد. روایتی درباره‌ی از دست دادن ایمان خود به هر آنچه ما را فراگرفته است.
آن خستگی از تماشای مکررات زندگی را درون هنری احساس می‌کنم. زمانی که به زخمی‌ها نگاه می‌کرد و ترس آن‌ها را بو می‌کشید یاد زخمی شدن خودش افتاده بود. یاد زمانی که روحش از تنش جدا شد و قبل از آنکه مردنش به درازا بکشد به جسمش بازگشت. انزجارش را هنگام گوش دادن به ناله‌ی ملایم توپ‌ها احساس می‌کردم. تو نمی‌ترسیدی تنها به ملال آمده بودی. وقتی برای آخرین بار به اتاقش با رینالدی رفت بیرون برف می‌بارید. به سوی پنجره رفت و به بیرون نگاه کرد. به تخت خواب رینالدی برگشت و برای آخرین بار جسم رینالدی را در جای خالی‌اش احساس کرد. می‌دانستم از شبی که درون اتاق هتل بعد از بیماری با کارتین خوابید به ترک جنگ فکر می‌کرد و هرقدم بیشتر مطمئن می‌شد. دوباره به میدان جنگ بازگشت تا نابودی را دقیق‌تر تماشا کند. هنگام خواندن، هنگام غوطه‌ور شدن در روایت بیش از هرلحظه‌ای ایمان داشتم هیچ کس گناهی ندارد. اما چه می‌شود کرد؟ وقتی با آیمو، بونلو، پیانی پیش از عقب نشینی می‌نوشیدند تنها او می‌دانست که این یک جشن کوچک خداحافظی است. می‌خواست جنگ را فراموش کند، می‌خواست با کاترین از آنجا برود و خوشبخت شود، می‌خواست به صلح برسد اما هربار که احساس سرخوشی می‌کرد و با کاترین از جاده‌های برفی پایین می‌آمد اطمینان داشت که سرخوشی‌اش بهاری کاذب است. هربار که بیرون رفتنش را از بیمارستان تماشا کردم بیشتر سستی عضلاتش را درون بدنم احساس کردم، بیشتر گام‌های سنگینش در آن باران مرا به درون داستان کشید. زمانی که جملات همینگوی تمام شد چه بلایی سرش آمد؟ کرختی انگشتانش را هنگامی که به مجسمه‌ی کاترین نگاه می‌کرد در دستان خودم احساس می‌کردم. همیشه می‌خواهم به تو فکر کنم. شب‌هایی که با کشیش، رینالدی و دیگر افسران دور میز شام می‌خوردند، می‌نوشیدند و می‌خندیدند حتی لحظه‌ای گمان نمی‌کرد چه روزهایی در انتظارش است. گمان نمی‌کرد مدتی بعد برای فرار از جنگ چانه‌اش را به زور روی تخته چوبی نگه دارد و امید برای دست یافتن به لذت اندکی در زندگی سبب شود تلاش کند و از مردنش جلوگیری کند. متاسفم که اینقدر ناامید شدی و اینقدر بعد از آن شب به آن تخته چوب فکر کردی که ای کاش همان موقع رهاش کرده بودی.

از شقایق و علی هم ممنونم که اومدن کنار هم خوندیمش و باعث شدن دقت و حوصله‌ی بیشتری به خرج بدم.

Just before A Farewell to Arms I read For Whom the Bell Tolls written eleven years later. Comparisons came immediately to mind. Both are war stories with horror, death, love and romance. I found For Whom the Bell Tolls to be gripping while A farewell to Arms was too cutesy to get passionate about.

In A Farewell to Arms the cavalier Federico Henry’s offhanded manner and his girlfriend Catherine’s affectations beg credibility in light of their very serious circumstances. Also the ease with which everyone loans money, supplies food and drink, provides transportation, etc., just when needed so Lieutenant Henry never really has to break a sweat to make his next move similarly diminishes plausibility. I wish I had the life where after jumping into a raging river while facing execution I am saved from drowning by a floating piece of timber which then hit shore near the train going to Milan that lets me off in front of a café where the proprietor offers me breakfast, a glass of grappa and new ID papers if need them which I don’t because everything always works out for me anyway.

What an opposite we have in the cold calculating Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls. In him we have a man who I can believe is facing death, who falls in love and takes to heart its slim chances of fruition given his situation. Robert’s Maria has just survived an emotional ordeal as did Catherine and has been deeply impacted, but just as with the men, Maria’s manner comes across as genuine not contrived as is Catherine’s. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, just as in real life, nothing comes easy. Things always seem to go wrong, not right. Perhaps the eleven year older Hemingway had a little different outlook. Regardless he significantly elevated his craft.

This work was arguably my "gateway classic" - the one that started my love for the entire genre. I read it almost five years ago, and although I remember that impactful ending, I had quite forgotten the true artistry of Hemingway's prose. Having now reread it, it's no wonder that this is one of his more famous works, as each and every page is ripe with his distinct and memorable style. The story itself is one of a man simply trying his best to adapt to the circumstances like keeps throwing at him. It is, at times, funny, romantic, and uniquely tragic, and is a timeless work that I would recommend to anyone looking for an enthralling and mindset-altering work!
