Potential Audience (reading level): k-2; emergent

Genre: Fictional picture book (with interactive flaps)

Topic: Barnyard animals and the sounds they make, guessing game for children

Specific curricular uses: This would be a great read-aloud for kindergarten: have them guess the sounds the animals would make as you read through the book.

Social issues the book addresses: This book addresses life on a farm, interacting with animals and their individual characteristics.

Specific literary elements: The book uses questions to draw readers into the text and guess what sounds the animals make, and uses repetition on every page ("Guess who? Peek-a-")

Interactions and counter actions of text and images: The images in this story are crucial to the understanding of the text because the text does say what the animal is - the child can guess what the animal is and what sound it makes, but then it must fold down the arms of the animal to figure out the correct answer. I love how interactive the images in this book are!

A very simple but enjoyable concept and, judging by the layers of tape on the library copy, very much loved! Good for teaching animal names and sounds, playing peek-a-boo and colours. Love it!

Peek-a-Moo! (Lift-the-Flap) by Marie Torres Cimarusti, illustrated by Stephanie Petersen is a classic lift the flap book focusing on farm related animals.

This book has repetition on every page, with the phrase, “guess who? Peek a ____.” Lifting the flap to find out, the reader discovers a phrase like "Peek-a-moo!" says the cow, or "Peek-a-quack!" says the duck. This book for emergent readers features a large font, good space between letters, few words on each page, repetitive phrases, and illustrations that closely match the text. Among the animals featured are a cow, mouse, duck and owl.

The bold, funny illustrations are entertaining for both children and adults reading it.

This is popular for baby, toddler and early preschool storytimes, as is Peek-a-Zoo. It's an interactive hit with young children.

For ages 1 to 5, farm animals, repetition, question-answer, read-aloud, phonological-awareness, print-motivation, and fans of Marie Torres Cimarusti and Stephanie Petersen.

These "Peek-a-" books are great to share with young children, either in a story program setting or at home. Children love imitating animal sounds. Lots of "phonological awareness" opportunities here!

This is a regular sized picture book with almost full page sized flaps shaped like the animals. The flaps are of the animals covering their eyes playing peekaboo. When the animal is revealed it says, "Peek-a-Moo" or whatever sound that animal makes. Great fun for toddlers who are learning their animals sounds.
