Farmer Brown's Barnyard Tales

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type

Farmer Brown has a problem. His cows like to type. All day long he hears Click, clack, moo. Click, clack, moo. Clickety, clack, moo. But the problems really begin when the cows start leaving Farmer Brown notes. First it was electric blankets...where will it end? And when the animals don't get what they want they go on strike, of course! Doreen Cronin's unusual text and Betsy Lewin's quirky illustrations make this a hilarious story.

This was a free library giveaway and we loved it! These smart cows that show the pen is mightier than the sword, in this case typewriter.

It was funny. The kids and I giggled a bit. I think it shows kids it is never too late to learn something new and that you can fight for justice (or electric blankets) no matter your size or circumstance. Enjoyable.

Click, clack, MOO!!!

This is not a bilingual book, but it works very well for bilingual storytime, especially with a school-age group. This is a very popular title in English, so kids who do not speak Spanish have often read the story before and stay engaged hearing it in Spanish. The repeating "Clic, clac, muu" is the same in both languages and everyone can participate! I love using books that make parents and kids laugh together, and this is definitely one of those! Also great for print awareness.

okay, so, liam and i have read this one about 23 times now - which is my prerequisite number of reads before i allow myself to goodreads a children's book.

this one is funny.

which is important to parents when reading 23+ times.

it also provides a rich opportunity to discuss wage labor disputes and labor laws, as well as striking and union negotiations to a six-year-old.

he's not impressed, but he likes the duck.

i like that the duck is considered a neutral party and serves a go-between when discussions breakdown.

Very humorous, even though a little bit absurd (cows that type?) story. The book works best when read aloud, as the refrain "click clack moo" is rhythmical and thus can be easily remembered. It does not only teach how to organize a strike (in a way), but also teaches one important lesson: do not give the cows a typewriter. More seriously, though, the book touches upon the topic of the life of farm animals, that on the one hand should be treated in a “humane” way, but on the other have certain duties. The illustrations are painted in watercolor, so there are rather not many details, but the colors are warm and distinct. The text is integrated in the pictures and there is a clear distinction between what is said by the narrator, and what is written by the farmer and the cows. In my opinion it is a great piece of reading for younger children.

Oh, my goodness! Seeing this book reminds me that I have Click, Clack, Moo to thank for becoming a writer! My family (including my husband) loved hearing me read this story to them because the characters were fantastic (and I tried to give them funny voices, too). I love the ending (which is just a picture. No need for words). Best kids’ book ever!
