Stories of hunting and fishing near the Great Lakes along with a few on bull-fighting and war, nothing seemed as good to me as The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.

If you read only one book by Ernest Hemingway, by all means read this one. These are all short stories, and some of them are only a few sentences long, while others are like short novellas.
The most famous stories in this collection are classics like "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," "Snows of Kilomanjaro," "A Clean Well-Lighted Place," "The Undefeated," and "Fifty Grand." These stories date from Hemingway's celebrity period when he traveled the world hunting big game and making love to beautiful women. But my personal favorites are the earlier stories, like "My Old Man," and the ones from when he was a young World War One Veteran, like "Big Two Hearted River" and "Soldiers Home," or even the stories about being a teenager in rural Michigan, like "The Battler," "The Killers," and "The Three Day Blow."
No matter what kind of story you like, you can't go wrong with this amazing collection!

Probabil aceste povestiri arata cel mai bine cine a fost Hemingway. Fiecare pare ca poarta macar o mica urma autobiografica, desi poate nu asta a fost intentia autorului.
Unele povestiri par usor misogine pe alocuri ceea ce se subscrie si mai mult biografiei autorului, dar i-am trecut cu vederea acest mic “defect”.
Ele mi-au dat imboldul sa mai incerc totusi sa citesc un roman de-al lui Ernest Hemingway.

Antes dos autores contemporâneos como Ricardo Lisias, Cristóvão Tezza, entre outros, Hemingway já escrevia no estilo auto-ficção. Esse livro reúne 28 contos do autor e a impressão que tive foi de estar lendo trechos aleatórios de seu diário. Através principalmente de seu famoso personagem Nick Adams ele traz pequenas lembranças de suas experiências nos vários países pelos quais passou, incluindo os períodos de guerra, numa narrativa curta e grossa, com frases curtas e diálogos rápidos.
Não foi uma boa experiência de leitura, ficava sempre com a sensação de não ter assimilado o que o autor quis passar. É como se ele tivesse escrito para si mesmo, registrando suas memórias e a falta da vivência do que ele passou me deixava sempre com a pergunta: "e então?".

Não foi uma boa experiência de leitura, ficava sempre com a sensação de não ter assimilado o que o autor quis passar. É como se ele tivesse escrito para si mesmo, registrando suas memórias e a falta da vivência do que ele passou me deixava sempre com a pergunta: "e então?".

Non ho mai particolarmente amato Hemingway e spesso quanto gravita intorno all'insegnamento delle tecniche di scrittura me lo ha proprio fatto detestare. Questi racconti li ho scelti per leggerli senza avere nelle orecchie dettami, insegnamenti, paragoni, esempi. Li ho letti standomene finalmente solo con le sue storie. Punto. Io e le storie. Non mi piacciono gli argomenti tipo corride, pesca, pugilato. Mi piacciono i personaggi, mi piace ciò che mi ha lasciato la lettura di questa raccolta. Mi ha dato la compagnia e la voce di Hemingway per quello che è. Una persona con tante emozioni, uno sguardo intenso e attento, e una voce unica.

Che cosa significa saper scrivere?
Se qualcuno mi chiedesse che cosa significa saper scrivere, gli consiglierei di leggere i 49 racconti.
Ernesto aveva l’Afición per la realtà oltre a uno smisurato talento per descriverla. La sua prima lettura, tanti anni fa, la devo a un verso di Guccini “I nostri miti morti ormai, la scoperta di Hemingway, il sentirsi nuovi, le cose sognate e ora viste” La scoperta di Hemingway… Se non è troppo e non è troppo poco, se è un solo aggettivo ma è quello giusto, se vi dà l’idea di esser semplice, fruibile, reale, vicino, vostro… andate a controllare il nome sulla copertina.

I've read this book before and I'm reading it again. Hemingway writes exceptional short stories. There are some Nick Adams Stories I've enjoyed. Also there is "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." It's one of my favorite Hemingway short story. The story is very macho and is about hunting big game. Both subjects are very much out of fashion but I like the story anyway.
