Gritty and violent - well written

A fine crime novel - lots of action and plot, lean writing, just enough character development to make our hero likable.

Far, far better than the first in the series. Simmons stopped trying to write a contemporary "urban" novel and just wrote a full-blown Simmons novel that just happened to have a PI as the main character. Way more interesting on a literary level, with much more interesting characters. Looking forward to the next one!

Novela negra de las oscuras, como debe ser, con violencia cruda. Quitando algunas casualidades, la trama está correcta, con giros y cruces hasta el final, donde todo encaja. Las escenas violentas son duras, sin filtros. Hay algunos personajes perdedores sin remedio y otros que son "prescindibles" de por sí y de ahí su destino en la novela. El ambiente es opresivo por el clima, no cambia ni cuando se desarrolla dentro de viviendas de lujo. Especialmente recomendada para amantes de la novela negra dura, sin medias tintas, donde se dispara primero y luego se habla.

Great noir badass detective pageturner. And really, is there anyone that can write as well, in so many different genres and styles, as Dan Simmons? Hyperion (operatic scifi), The Terror (survivalist horror), Joe Kurtz (pulp detective novels), etc.

An entertaining, but generic and predictable P.I. story.

Facile et ludique mais on sent qu'il a été écris aussi rapidement qu'il est lu. La plus partd de personnage de ce livre sont récurrant et comme je n'avais pas lu le ou les précédent(s), j'ai eu l'impression de prends le train en marche. Heureusement c'était un jour de grève...

Reminiscent of Richard Stark’s Parker novels, but I think even Parker would blanch at the ultra violence in this novel. Fast moving, full of ridiculous coincidences, and a lot of high-octane fun, this one delivered the goods.

Джо Курц отново разчиства сметки, намесва се в игрите на мафията, но най-интересното беше намесата на сериен убиец превъплащаващ се като хамелеон в различни социални прослойки и уважавани професии. Именно криминалната нишка предизвика донякъде интереса ми и повиши малко оценката.
Много мислих каква оценка да дам. Като цяло е по-добра от Куфарът, имаше повече екшън, повече обрати и много куршуми. Но това не ми е от предпочитаните жанрове и затова оценката ми няма да е висока. Все пак, за да я разгранича от пошлата първа ще дам 2,5 и ще ги закръгля към 3*.

Simmons does it again. A pitch perfect Richard-Stark-on-speed impression that ranks up there with some of the best Parker novels I've read. I know it's not fair to compare every book in the hard-boiled genre to Parker, but I get the feeling Simmons would find the comparison flattering. Holy shit though was this book intense and violent.
