Joe Kurtz, ancien détective, est un homme violent, rompu à tous les vices de la nature humaine.
A peine sorti de 11 années de prison pour avoir fait justice lui-même en voulant venger l'assassinat de sa femme, il se retrouve plongé dans l'univers du crime et pourchassé par des policiers corrompus ainsi qu'un psychopathe d'une intelligence peu commune.
S'ensuivent 350 pages menées tambour battant, où la morale n'est pas de mise.
Une écriture sobre et nerveuse sert magistralement ce polar, allant à l'essentiel, pour le plus grand plaisir des passionnés du genre.

Great, hard-boiled action in the second Joe Kurtz novel.
Dan Simmons adapts his style so well to this genre that it reads like a 50’s thriller but with violence turned way up.
Simple, clean, addictive thrills. I am looking forward to the next, final book!

Should I read this? What's this all about?
Sure; if u think a Hard-boiled detective-story by a great writer, would enrich yr life somehow...
I have no doubt that there are better series in this genre, as Simmons only wrote 3 in between countless non fictions, and hard SFs, but yeah give it a try.

And ignore my rating (now and ever; as well as other peoples :) as quite subjective: in this case i found 2 parts that did not fit my life xpectations/taste which surely were conscious story/character choices of Simmons)

Any strong points?
- It's gritty like a noir from the 30's, w a 60's vibe, probably happenin' in the cellular phone age, with a mindset of people from the 90's :)
- A detective story without a real detective (an ex detective, that has already been to prison for taking revenge on some mobsters; that really till the end did not want to acknowledge he's on a case; mearly helping a friend of a friend{ex informant}; it's sweet & @least this is how it read to me)
- Happy story ending somehow predictable, but since all happens in the frame of a couple of days; quite action packed&driven

What's next?
I'll probably revisit the Dresden series as for some reason the main char in this 2 merge in my mind, as 1 and the same either:
- Kurz(short in german) is as cool and real as Dresden is
- They really are the same character personality wise
- There is something supernatural about Kurt's instinct and cases... Which come on...there must be some real dark-side in which only him lives is able to perceive-Harry Potter style :)

Maybe i'll go through some of (the) Last Apprentice teen-novel (like Dresner should be seen as: above average young adult stories; that should be sold as a discount to Adults... Come on... They take 2-3 times less to write and so should be priced in a Diff category... :) )

BuT i'll keep out of any novels from the Garett series, although in the same general detective-based, case-structured storytelling, a different more elevated writing style (again conscious decision of all writers including Cook) and not characterS driven storytelling but more rather event self-driven, self-explanatory, self-solving detectiveing :)

Интересно се получи. След „Куфарът” очаквах нещо подобно - безумно и изпълнено с задъхващо действие, но Симънс успя за пореден път да ме изненада. Романът Hard Freeze е горе-долу два пъти по-обемен от предшественика си и Симънс е вкарал цялата си способност да навърже заплетен сюжет. Резултатът е по-скоро ноар трилър, от колкото пълп. Все пак авторът успява да заобиколи клишетата от жанра, особено тези свързани с коравия, нещастен, симпатяга за главен герой. Джо Курц е способен, но далеч не е Джон Рамбо, нито Хъмфри Богард, а проблемите които го напалатват на камари могат да катурнат и най-коравия копелдак. Освен това успява доста добре да се развие в течение на повествованието, но пак да си остане малко или много мистерия. А антагонистът е мнооого на място – свръхинтелигентен психопат, изнасилвач, убиец, религиозен екстремист, хамелион – ммм!
Буквално месеци след събитията в „Куфарът”, Бъфало щата Ню Йорк отново ще се превърне в кървава баня, в центъра на която е нашето момче. Не му стигат старите награди за главата, проблемите с пробацията и алкохоликът опекун на може-би-дъщеря-му, а се оказва, че още някой иска да го види мъртъв и то някой скръндза, защото по петите на Курц са плъзнали всички второразредни килъри в щата; плюс последната издънка на фамилия Фарино си е дошла от европа и има планове за него; плюс добрият му приятел Прино му изпраща умиращ от рак клиент с трогателна история, която Курц някак взима присърце, колкото и да се прави на непукист; плюс затварят му офиса и трябва да намери 35 бона до края на седмицата; плюс... абе мазало.
Симънс я подкарва на няколко сюжетни линии, които в движение се събират една в друга, докато не доведат до Тит Андроникова финална сцена. Отново литературните референции са на ниво и обхващат от класическа литература, през филосовски трудове, до криминални романи. След всяка негова книга списъкът ми за четене нараства в геометрична прогресия (е, може би аритметична, айде). Да веидим третата, че не я долюбват много читателите.

Видно, що Сіммонс перший роман не планував продовжувати, але... Тому в другому романі циклу є певні нестиковки з першим. Але це очікувано: якось треба ж продовжити лінії персонажів.
І через те, що другий роман писався окремо від першого - то видно і зміну стилю. Тут вже нема гіпертрофованості першого роману. Але сюжет далі закручений, рушниці на стінах стріляють, а друга половина роману така динамічна, що годі відірватися

The story rated 4 stars BUT the endless non-story chatter drove me nuts. I don't want to be told what everyone was wearing, eating, and scratching their butts (I added that).

Simmons should know better than that. He has written really good stories.
