This is the second of three Joe Kurtz hard-boiled detective novels that Simmons wrote. Good stuff for John MacDonald fans. My problem was that I was thrown out of the story (the suspension-of-belief, if you will) early because of lazy editing. On page two, Joe goes into Ted' Hot Dogs and gets two dogs, onion rings, and a cup of coffee. On page three, he starts on his second dog and takes a drink of his Coke. What? If there was some magical transubstantiation that turned his coffee into Coke it should have been explained in the text. Sure, it's a minor point, but it bugged me nonetheless.

Very interesting characters and a good story. Read it in 24 hours. I nearly rated it 4*.

this was not as good as the first one, but it was still pretty good. what i liked about this book was that the language was toned down even though the characters were still as complex and the plot still had many twists and turns. it was all most set up though. where the first book would have a twist and you wouldn't know it was coming, this one would let you know that there was going to be a twist and you had to wait on it. i like the first type of story better. there also was less action and more dialogue in this story. i like the more action better. it was still a good story though and had a villian who had a possibility of winning.

Kurtz hunts down a serial killer, while himself being hunted down by a mob boss. An unrelenting symphony of hardboiled crime, with extra servings of violence and action but also some poignant moments that lend depth and sympathy for Kurtz and his multitudes of misfortune. The serial killer character is particularly memorable, not only vile and calculating, but Moriarty level clever and deceptive, all beneath a thick shell of civility and piety that makes him particularly revolting.

This was a fairly forgettable read. It wasn't awful by any stretch, but Simmons has some really good books under his belt, and this isn't one of them. It's just really average and ultimately another book about a tough guy that you know will figure everything out by the end, and probably not in a super interesting fashion. The book is super easy to read. The chapters are short, and despite not being super interesting, it is paced very well, and there's not a ton of filler.

This one was my Siesta Key beach read a couple of weeks ago. The story is okay as is the book overall. Nothing spectacular in either story or character.
