This is one of the most interesting sci-fi books out there. It encompasses themes of religion, faith, social structures, love, family, personal drive and much much more. I would recommend to dive in and enjoy the ride, no more information about the plot needed.
One important thing to note is that the first two books ("Hyperion" and "Fall of Hyperion") are actually one single story and the next two are also a single story. They have a closed ending, so you can read them on their own and decide if you wish to continue reading it, since there is a time skip between them. For me, I will wait and maybe read the next two in a few years since what I read felt good as-is.

Хиперион се оказа, меко казано, спорна за мен като качества книга, тъй като е пропита до ушите с религиозни извращения на душата, съвсем реалистично близко бъдеще, обезкуражаващо съчетание на класическа човешка тъпота и преждевременно очовечени машинни съзнания, които по никакъв начин не се свързват нито с една моя емпатична клетка, а по-скоро прогарят картини на анихилация и унищожение в огън, каквото в крайна сметка се и случва, и за финал някакви философски епитафии от мъртви и неродени поети на видения, достатъчно последователни, за да впечатлят и изкуствените интелекти. Дали умът ми е настроен да разбира повече родените създатели на богове ИИ-тата от човешките тълпи мързеливи, презадоволени, тесногръди колонизатори, единодушни само по темата, че ново бъдеще може да изгради само върху тлеещите пепелища от минало, не зная. Противна елегия за бъдещите поколения с коефициент на интелект по-малък и от този на настояща подивяла тълпа, напоена с много поезия на Кийтс (да си отбележа да го погледна най-накрая този човек, че бива цитиран не от една книга или автор като прозорец към алтернативното бъдеще или минало, или може би най-реалистично казано, настояще, случващо се зад ръба на периферното ни зрение). Но изключително изящно и проникновено описана помия в крайна сметка, ако на човек му се чете за липсващата еволюция на емоционалната интелигентност, която въпреки усилията на предполагаеми батальони уж индигови, кристални и кой знае какви още деца е най-реалистичното ни тъмно бъдеще. Холо-чалга, психо-дрога, хроно-насилие. Кошмари наяве, макар и не погледнати плътно в очите. Но да бъдем конкретни.

Хиперион е мегаломански проект, с грандоманската структура на изтрещял бог, стъпкващ досадните си творения, за да освободи място за бъдещето или просто за нищото. Симънс е гениален автор, нямам никакво съмнение в това. Разкрива светове, които не искам да си представям дори в тежките моменти на дива мизантропия, когато искам да създавам само за да унищожа, със заплашителна детайлност и смазваща ин-йор-фейс реалност на лакът разстояние. Историите на седем, или повече, често и по-малко, поклонници на последното търсене на Бога в лицето на чудовище, изплувало от кошмарните видения за бъдещето, което между другото е съвсем като излязло от Реална фантазия брой двеста и втори, да речем, ни завъртат във вихъра на привидно последната битка на съзнанието с технологията. Завърналият се Бог е далеч по-близък, неразбираем и неутешим от благодетеля на която и да е вяра, която човеците са се осмелили да изобретят с малките си неелектронни умове. Пред нея тихо подгъват коляно уж колоси на вътрешната стабилност като католицизма, будизма, исляма, наред с агностицизма, нихилизма като вариант на мислене и на дори чистия атеизъм. Доказателство за липса на божественост или крайна вяра в основата на Бога. Объркано и помитащо, минаващо през съдби на изтлели таланти, огорчени родители, неосъществени обичащи, несбъднали се предатели, измамени спасители, безцелни поклонници. О, да, и чувствителни киборзи или киборгове, или както там се казва на нещо, което е генетично човек, но е плъгнато като Нео в матрицата на общо основание и сърфира, докато диша, из бъдещия вариант на мрежата.

Ако някой се е сетил за Вълшебникът от Оз, не е случайно. Пилигримите на болката са понесли своите тегла към най-величавия майстор на негативните усещания, искайки от него някакъв вариант на помощ с отрицателен знак. Първият том на сагата Хиперион застига своя финал точно на пътеката от златни плочки, и там трябваше и да остане. Оригиналната постройка, различните съдби и подходи в описването им, надникването зад гърба на толкова много прокълнати да бъдат интересни животи, завъртането на действието във вихъра на времето, почващ отникъде и завършващ в противоположна посока, трябваше да останат единствени господари на историята в ума на сравнително впечатления читател дори от моя критичен тип, но плодотворната идея бива безмилостно доизстискана през задръстената цедка на предполагаемата авторска или агентска лакомия в Падането…, наричано от мен и Падението на Хиперион. Не обичам да ми се обяснява прекалено, но явно разясненията от тип “и той направи така, защото тя му беше казала, тъй като те така наредиха” са нужни за изпускащите връзката на събитията. Историите са сънища на пси- или ки-, или сайбо(р)гове, достигнали до човешките уши по силата на политика и интереси, на които машините явно се научават с най-голяма леснота, са новата рамка, в която Симънс продължавала да плете своята мрежа за наивници. И за фон имаме зрелищното унищожение на няколко свята, милиарди бездушници и грижливо създавани порядки и мрежи от правила за живот, но това на мен лично ми бе безпределно неинтересно. Личните съдби на обречениците се разтягат до невъзможност и деус екс макина се проявява отново, за да спаси човечеството с цената на хаотична смърт и пожертвана бледа надежда, макар че точно в тези книги деусът си се мота с ръцете ножици в по-голямата част от времето, набучвайки си по някое човешка суши-душа за разтуха, и общо взето, плашейки гаргите за неумрелите все още кандидати за различен живот, го играе мълчаливия зъл, победен от силата на една детска ръчичка.

Ендимион продължава болезнената сага утопия още напред в бъдещето, разбърквайки в казана още уж от същото, но дори гениалността е изтощителна, така че пропуснах тази гозба за загладилата косъм читателска моя свидна душа. Такива книги обаче са нужни, дори само като единствените ни примери за четивна класика, която, докосвайки правилната душа, ще вдъхнови и въздигне в тера-пространството на ума желанието за промяна и различие и може би ще ни спести масовото жертвоприношение на олтара на разрушителния край на времето, за който ни се налага да мислим в някоя и друга секунда от битието ни. Хиперион или ще ви грабне в лапите си и ще ви притисне във всички точки на преклонението и ужаса на атавистичната памет на кръвта, или ще ви накара да потърсите някое по-сигурно убежище за търсещата ви фантазия, искаща спасение от злата си близначка, реалността. Но равнодушието не е изход в тази игра. Не и ненаказуем такъв.

Baroque, enormously complicated, and oftentimes contradictory, the Hyperion series can be a frustrating read. But it’s filled with brilliant writing and equally brilliant concepts, and it’s one of the few far-future works that manages to pair interesting and somewhat relatable characters with the sometimes truly outlandish creations advanced technology makes possible. (Simmon’s living Dyson sphere being a particular favorite of mine.)

(6 of 5 stars) The best Space opera I have read and one of the top two sci-fi books (series) all categories. Think this is the fourth or fifth time I read these books and they are still as great as ever. Simmons shows how you make great litterature out of what once was a pulp genre. And the books change with you over time. When I first read them Sol, the academic, was the least interesting character arc in the book. Now (13 years later) that I am a father I think that story is one of the best in the book and I understand why Simmons put so much time into it. He has a nack for hitting you in the gut as a parent (see Song of Kali). I love these books, and I look forward to read them again in a few years.

Certainly worth its status as a classic! I should say immediately that I think this should be read in the Omnibus version, including The Fall of Hyperion. The story feels so unfinished otherwise. It took me a while to get into this, as at first I thought the stories within the story were a distraction from the main mythology and story. But as the gripping individual tales went on, I realized that the point was to get these small glimpses about the mythology and piece it all together slowly. I still didn't read this through all that quickly, just a few chapters at a time usually. It's worth savouring!

Opinión de la primera parte de este libro: Hyperion .

Hasta hace muy poco si me preguntaban por Hyperion se me venía a la cabeza el satélite de Saturno o la editorial de poesía. Ahora, gracias a la novelista Eva García Guerrero, a la que "escuché" hablar maravillas de este libro (en su obra Huella 12 veo influencias muy claras), ya me va a saltar a la cabeza otra acepción.

Porque estamos ante una maravilla. El autor consigue crear un universo futuro (después de la expansión de la humanidad por el mismo y abandonada la vieja Tierra) con tantos detalles y tanta imaginación, y además de una forma tan sutil, sin tener que explicarlo dos veces, que enseguida estás metido ahí hasta los corvejones y solo una unidad de élite de FUERZA es capaz de quitarte el libro de las manos.
Me encanta cuando se inventa palabras que describen perfectamente términos de ese futuro que tiene en su cabeza (naves antorcha, raraleña, teleyector...). No hace falta más (y menos mal, porque el libro es un tocho de los de romperte el puente de la nariz si te quedas dormido leyendo en la cama), porque la palabra es lo suficientemente evocadora para saber de qué habla.

En cuanto a la trama, este primer libro está dividido en 6 grandes relatos, cada uno con un protagonista y ambientado en una serie de mundos: una mezcla de "La misión" y "Alien, el octavo pasajero"; una de soldados de élite espaciales con un súcubo que se trajina al protagonista (y cuanto más guarro y cansado está éste, mejor); una de poetas malditos y borrachines; un relato altamente lacrimógeno con una mujer que envejece al revés y el esfuerzo de su padre por curarla; Blade Runner cambiando a Harrison Ford por una tía negra y empoderada; y tal vez mi favorito, un alegato ecologista con una historia de amor muy bonita pero trágica, consecuencia de las leyes de la física relativista. Quién puede pedir más.

Y parece mentira que el libro sea de los años 90 (sí, han pasado más de 30 años) porque habla de un montón de cosas que ahora nos parecen totalmente normales: los comlog, que son unos smartphone de muñeca o las IA y su repercusión en nuestras vidas. Cuando abra mi clínica de tratamientos rejuvenecedores basados en los telómeros del ARN la voy a llamar Clínica Poulsen :).

Y todas las historias, atadas a un hilo común: ese planeta tan misterioso en el que ha aparecido el Alcaudón (ver foto de la portada). Remedo de Godzilla y Hellraiser. Que parece que no será un McGuffin esotérico en el próximo libro. Éso espero.

Me dirijo en la gironave al siguiente tomo: La caída de Hyperion. Ya contaré cuando llegue.

La Caída de Hyperion

Es verdad, como todo el mundo comenta, que esta segunda parte decae algo respecto a la primera. Pero también es verdad que viendo como evolucionaba la historia pensaba que me iba a quedar con cara de cinco duros con tantas cosas sin cerrar, y al final, de una forma sorprendente, todo ha encajado.
Es una trama densa y algo complicada, llena de giros, traiciones, dobles traiciones, sorpresas, revelaciones...pero sin posibilidad de pérdida si no pierdes interés.

Mantener el pulso narrativo de la primera parte era una tarea titánica, pero creo que el autor despacha la novela con un gran sobresaliente. Y no era fácil.

En esta segunda parte, los protagonistas de la primera, ya se meten en faena para lo que sea que están destinados. Y entran en juego las Inteligencias Artificiales (a partir de este momento IA).
Aquí me vuelvo a quitar el sombrero ante Dan Simmons para aplaudir, y ya de paso para pensar si este tío realmente no vino del futuro para escribir todo lo que escribe. Lo mismo es un simple narrador que se metió en las Tumbas del Tiempo siguiendo a su perro en un paseo vespertino.
Nos alerta de un hecho que ya es casi una realidad (en los 90 era pura Ciencia Ficción y Terminator plantea otros escenarios más burdos): las IA controlarán absolutamente todo y nosotros nos aburguesaremos en las comodidades que ello nos brinda. Ya se está viendo: artistas que son reemplazados por un algoritmo; actores digitales en vez de los de carne y hueso; bandas musicales que hacen hits como churros y que son capaces de imitar estilos. Y ésto es sólo el comienzo.
En unas décadas habremos pasado de la indignación al conformismo y veremos con indiferencia como dirigentes políticos son sustituidos por máquinas. Y de ahí a lo que cuenta el autor en este libro poco camino hay.

Por poner algunas pegas:
- El Alcaudón. Que un grupo de IA's en el futuro lejano hagan una especie de guerrero para luchar contra la "humanidad" y le salga un robot Frankenstein hecho con restos de un desguace no lo veo.
- Lo de Keats para arriba y Keats para abajo tampoco me ha gustado. Está bien resuelto y lo hace encajar, pero me ha parecido demasiado forzado.

Así que poco más que añadir a esta magna obra, llena de mundos posibles y posibilidades futuras.

This volume contains the first duology of the Hyperion Cantos. You really do need to allocate time to read both (779 pages) because Hyperion by itself is not a satisfactory standalone (no sooner do the characters arrive at their destination than the book ends practically mid-sentence).

The first book is an interesting tale of seven travelers on their journey to the planet Hyperion. Along the way we get their backstories amidst some present-tense narrative. The seven characters are all very different from one another, some, like the crass and self-absorbed poet I was loath to occupy the same headspace, so I read those sections as quickly as I could. Others, like the war hero were more sympathetic at first but ventured into extreme situations that provided for most unpleasant imagery in the reader’s mind, i.e. fits of bloodlust on the battlefield and then having sex with his lover on the field of bloody carnage and body parts.

I was most engaged with professor Weintraub’s story involving reverse aging, despite leaning heavily upon paranormal dream connection and supernatural agency. In fact, there is a lot in the story that falls outside of reasonable scientific explanation, the how and why are baffling in book one, and only parenthetically explained in the second book. Thus, for most of the story we are left to ponder how creatures are regenerated upon a stone alter (how does the parasite manipulate matter – and this is the best solution an advanced sentience could come up with?); how, or why, the Time Tombs run backward in time (a super advanced civilization has to travel back in time to fix its problems?); how the Hawkins mat works (a high-tech flying carpet!); or how humanity was able to harness the farcaster singularities which allow instantaneous travel throughout the galaxy. Also have to laugh out loud at the pseudo-scientific gobbledygook such as the description of a carbon constructed Mobius cube containment field with a living, but non-sentient Erg inside: “a piezoelectric nervous system sheathed in silicon gristle” … able to “manipulate forcefields as large as those generated by small spinships.” Alrighty then.

So, the story is uneven based on the differing perspectives of the characters telling their tales. This first book is essentially just introducing us to the characters and doing some elaborate world building.

Book Two, the Fall of Hyperion, I actually enjoyed more, and if it wasn’t an essential part of a duology I’d probably give it five stars. Firstly, the pacing is faster and we get an interesting new character along with a clever narrative trick which allows us to follow present-tense action on two fronts. Of course this involves inexplicable science which goes beyond the farcaster singularities with an ability to reliably connect consciousness using dark energy as a medium for quantum entanglement across billions of neural networks. But what is lacking in clear science is made up for in literary and philosophical depth. I was also pleased to see a reference to Robinson Jeffers (Cawdor is one of my favorites); obviously, Mr. Simmons’ reading extends beyond just the science fiction genre. In the end, despite the quibbles and varying levels of engagement, this duology warrants a solid four star recommendation. I will be following up with the final two books soon!

Excellent intelligent sci fi. The main characters all have a back story, each of which would make an excellent short story on their own. I really liked this book, and will at some point get around to tracking down the sequels.

On the world of Hyperion, there waits a creature called the Shrike housed in the Time Tombs. Worshipped and despised the Shrike waits patiently. Seven pilgrims set forth seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. One may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.

Algo pesado de leer por momentos, aunque sigues en la historia simplemente por saber cómo concluye. Si bien la primera entrega (Hyperion) me pareció bastante dinámica por la estructura narrativa que sigue, esta secuela, narrada desde el punto de vista de la personalidad "cíbrida" de John Keats llamada Joseph Severn (que es capaz de, en sueños, ver lo que está sucediendo con los peregrinos), se hace un poco repetitiva al principio.

He de decir que, hacia el final, la historia remonta, con intrigas políticas y un par de revelaciones finales (sobre la historia de Kassad y la naturaleza de la ultralínea) que lo hacen mucho más entretenido de leer. El libro incluye algunas paranoias físicas finales (ya se sabe que "quantum" es un recurso fácil para explicar cualquier cosa), aunque sin llegar al extremo de, por ejemplo, "El problema de los tres cuerpos" de Cixin Liu. La derrota final del enemigo de los peregrinos está solucionada de manera algo precipitada a mi parecer.

En defensa de la novela diré que, cuando uno llega al epílogo con aparentemente todo resuelto, se queda con la sensación de que ha sido una historia bastante épica. Dejaré algún tiempo antes de comenzar con el siguiente de los libros, Endymion.

Il volume contiene i primi due romanzi della tetralogia fantascientifica di Hyperion e nel complesso è autoconclusivo.

Il libro è maestoso, barocco, immenso: fatico ad immaginare il lavoro dell’autore dietro a quest’opera, paragonabile soltanto a quello di J.R.R. Tolkien. Leggerlo significa entrare letteralmente in un nuovo universo caratterizzato da mondi sorprendenti, originali, descritti nei minimi dettagli e governato da dinamiche scientifiche e politiche complesse. Allo stesso modo tutti i personaggi (e sono tanti) hanno un profilo psicologico multiforme e una storia sempre diversa che permette al lettore di stringere rapporti intimi con essi, scandagliando nel profondo ogni personalità e assistendo agli eventi sotto il punto di vista peculiare di ciascuno.

I temi presenti sono tantissimi e vanno dalla guerra alla religione, dall’amore all’identità personale, dalla fede nella scienza alle questioni sociali. A ognuno è riservata una trattazione attenta e mai superficiale.

La trama è estremamente complicata, un enigma a cui si aggiungono pezzi dall’inizio alla fine rendendo il lettore sempre più consapevole e disorientato allo stesso tempo.

Nel complesso, la lettura di questo libro risulta quindi parecchio impegnativa e io ho impiegato molto tempo a finirlo, sentendo la necessità di interromperlo diverse volte per prendermi una pausa. Se siete pronti ad affrontarlo però, sarà un’esperienza magnifica e unica.

It is a really good book. So much so, that I even believe that it would be worth it to read it again so that I could understand and appreciate all the little details I’m sure are waiting for me all throughout the book. Unfortunately, it is a pretty long book for my standards, so I will not be re-reading it any time soon. But I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in hard science fiction.

Also, I believe I had the best experience reading this book instead of reading the two books individually. I just believe this story works better as a whole narrative than as a two-parter. This idea compensates for the fact that I had to carry an anvil disguised as a book wherever I wanted to go read. At least I got a workout out of carrying this book around.
