I picked this book up because I was curious about any practical advice I could glean in correcting, disciplining, redirecting my kids in testy times. But I personally did not get much from this having previously (and continue to do so) read books with a much more scientific basis and from a psychological standpoint. (I sound like such a high-minded, intellectual jerk here, but that's NOT my intention!)

I've really enjoyed books like: Peaceful Parent Happy Parent by Laura Markham, How Toddlers Thrive by Tovah P Klein, and The Whole Brained Child by Daniel Siegel. We've incorporated those strategies in our parenting and have seen much better results than what we've tried that this book suggested.

Of course I wouldn't say that the entire book was unhelpful. I can always find something positive! But because it isn't written by someone of authority whom I trust and because it doesn't have practices included that I agree with or have seen long-term positive results, I wouldn't recommend the book. (It's written by Blair from the tv show, FACTS OF LIFE) No offense to anyone loving it or the author. This is just my personal opinionated review.

Not a judgmental, how-to, methodological book. More of a list of things that worked for this particular family shared with whomever is interested.

Great ideas, very encouraging as a parent. Keeps the focus of directing your children to Jesus in view rather than just giving ideas about how to make them mind.

I loved this book. It gave me lots of ideas on how to deal with the kids in a way that would be creative and would make sense. It also gave insight into Lisa Whelchel's life.

This book reminded me early on to incorporate scripture in the midst of disciplining our children.

I read this book probably 10 years ago and have flipped through it many times since. Lisa Welchel (of The Facts of Life fame) wrote this very practical book to help parents who want to discipline well. She writes, "This is a book of ideas when you have no idea what to do!"
I love that this is not a Hollywood starlet kind of book with an idealized approach to doing it all. She starts off the book with a list of things she lets slide, including heathy meals and exercise. It's true that balance is a myth.

This is not a how to book that promises too much. But it's so helpful to have in your back pocket (figuratively..it's a thick book).

Some ideas are rewarding kids with various things (money, tv time, a piece of a Lego set at a time), having your child refold all of their clothes when they change more than once a day [definitely using this!], having your child literally hold their tongue when needed, require a child who constantly leaves things behind to "babysit" that thing for three days (carrying it around always).

I highly recommend this book!

Some pretty good ideas for correcting children's behavior, but most are geared toward homeschooling moms who spend every waking moment with their children.
