The Heart of the Matter is the story of a very conflicted man: One who felt responsible for everyone around him but not for himself; One who could not square his religious principles with his human feelings; One who had no sense of self or sense of purpose; One who could demonstrate both great integrity and great duplicity. He was a naïve weak man with little ambition who didn’t want to make waves and was ready to check out when the going got rough. In the end he was a man who was soon to be forgotten. Those close to him readily moved on with their lives without him.
Greene was a converted Catholic like his main character and religious conflict is a primary theme. The protagonist believes the Church’s teachings but realizes he is a hopeless sinner so he just gives up knowing he faces eternal damnation. Having been raised Catholic myself it is hard to picture a stalwart Catholic not trying to at least reach out to God to save his soul at the end. But Greene gives us a weak willed man whose everyday anxiety overcame his religious beliefs.
Nicely descriptive and easy to read, The Heart of the Matter held my interest but wasn’t compelling. If there is a moral it is “To thine own self be true…”. Recommended for Catholics who can’t reconcile their sins and those who just can’t accept that life is difficult.
