This self-help book really helped me to understand my own finances and how to improve my financial situation. It's simply written and explains things as concisely as necessary. There wasn't too much information where I became bored, but there was enough information where I felt it was valuable. It gave some great tips to determining your current situation and standing, as well as great tips for how to improve and save money for the rest of your life. For basic and simple finance information, this book was great.

Good information

There is some information in the book. I found the tax and investment information very confusing and boring so I skipped most of it.

Now, before you let the 5-star rating cause you to jump up and buy this book, read the review first. The For Dummies series is an excellent way to learn things. Financial planning is a subject that requires an almost daily update of your knowledge base. There are some fundaments of the subject that are outstandingly covered in this book and if you get it for that reason alone, you'll be doing well, but if you want to keep current, you really need a reliable website. Fortunately, the book includes a link to the For Dummies website that appears to be quite current, so what I'd do is get the latest (not this) edition of the book and frequent the website. Use to teach your kids, for the love of Mike! Goodness knows they don't get the essential advice given in this book in our schools private or public (and I support public schools). The style of presentation is conversation and quite enjoyable to read. Just be sure to keep current if you're going to follow the advice that the book gives you. With that, I wish you a very happy personal finance!

Definitely a great read. This books provides a basic yet comprehensive overview of many different important financial topics (many of which were not even touched on in my personal finance class in college), such as health, life and disability insurance, writing a will, investing within and outside of retirement accounts, mortgages/investing in real estate, education savings accounts for children, planning for retirement, owning and operating a small business, etc. What I especially liked is that the author tailored all of these financial decisions based on where you, the reader, are at in your life. For example, whether you are single or married, your income tax bracket, have children or not, and your age will all play factors in how you should make financial decisions. The author’s main advice throughout the book was to educate yourself on finances and to be your own personal financial planner.
