Very helpful if you are completely missing the basic for personal finance, otherwise there are few interesting takeaways. Unfortunately the US market has some differences compared to the EU one, therefore some points won't be interesting.
The investing parts of this book were not very good. The information was very outdated and did not discuss TFSAs properly. I think if you're interested in investing, just read "The Millionaire Teacher".
However, obviously this book was meant as a sort of encompassing resource for personal finance. If you are a complete novice and beginner who needs someone to tell you brands aren't worth the money - this will provide you with a ton of helpful information. If you're not - well it's pretty long so there'll be some content for you too. Still, I wish this had been condensed more. It was a bit of pain to read since a lot of the material I already knew.
Confession: I didn't read the whole book. I used it more like a car manual, flipping to different sections as needed. Still, the sections I did read were straightforward and informative. As someone who's never dug into money matters before, especially investing, this was invaluable.
My one complaint is that I didn't read this before nearly stepping in a few financial holes, but that's hardly the book's fault. More importantly, it confirmed and expanded on my suspicions in time to backpedal, so crises averted.
Definitely worth picking up, particularly if, like me, you're not well versed in the workings of finance, personal or otherwise. I strongly advise reading this or other similar materials before jumping into the unknown.
This book is perfect for American citizens, who live in the US. 30% of the book was general, and that was the leavening part but the rest is not applicable in the rest of the world! “But USA”
Another personal finance book that I added to my repertoire in the early 2000's to try to get my life in order and advancing the way I thought it should. Knowing what to do right with money was important to me back then because I knew what it felt like to live paycheck to paycheck. It sucked and I never wanted to be in that position again. So I figured out what to do with my money and how to earn money by working hard and moving ahead in life. I relied on my determination and physical stamina which helped me achieve so much. I was young and ambitious. Good times. :)
This book definitely provided great tips for people who don't have a clue. Now that I flip back through this book, it feels like common sense. But only because I employed these ideas and concepts and made some of them commonplace practices. Good for someone just starting out!
This book stands out as the very first book I delved into within this genre, and it undeniably secures a spot among my top three most treasured reads for the year 2023.
For someone who has their personal finances in order, this will be a boring and basic book. For someone who is just figuring out how to manage their finances, this is a great book. I read this book when I was feeling like I should get to prepare for my future personal finances and possible debt. This book helped me think systematically about what I should be doing with my finances and convinced me the need to save and invest for the future. I never thought I'd be so absorbed by a book like this but when you're in that weird transitional state between student and independent adult, a book like this can feel empowering. I can't believe this stuff isn't required education for public schools or even expensive colleges. This book also includes a lot of valid personal advice. Don't become obsessed with building wealth, personal relationships can be more valuable than anything.
This book provided a relatively comprehensive overview of personal finance in terms that were easy to understand. It solidly fulfilled the promises inherent in its title—what more can I ask for?
