1. Las aventuras de un escándalo en Bohemia

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the third book in the Sherlock Holmes series. Instead of novels, Adventures is a short story compilation that collects twelve of Holmes' most well-known cases that range from early to late in the famous detective's career. From the first story, A Scandal in Bohemia, where Holmes takes on Irene Adler, Arthur Conan Doyle seems to want to provide a better perspective of the investigator, a more wholistic view of Holmes and his relationship with Watson, both before he got married and after. The Bohemia case is amazingly feminist for the fact it was written with Victorian ideals prevalent. In the Blue Carbuncle, the reader is treated to another iconic case where the Holmes considers a justice that is more social-conscious and less punitive. Truth be told, I enjoyed every single story, unique for its time, building a mystery genre that begins with a singular mind, colorful cases, and superior story-telling. At root, this is an excellent collection of tales that amplify the Sherlock Holmes mythos by demonstrating not only the extraordinary logic of Holmes' reasoning but also the tremendous joy he would experience via the process and the depressing valleys he would travel when not engaged in an investigation.

Oh my. So, I’ve never read any Sherlock Holmes novels before, but the Robert Downey Jr. movies are my absolute favorite. I came into this book anticipating 1800th century English writing, which I got, but I had zero expectations as to humor, having assumed that the movies were just clever adaptations of antiquated books. So color me DELIGHTED when these stories had many laugh out loud moments, and plenty of times that I was completely tickled. This is a collection of 12 short stories, all mysteries in some way, that were published separately as part of a newspaper series if I’m not mistaken. Each story is unique, with varying degrees of humor and darkness.

I guessed the outcome to several of them, but that was secondary in my enjoyment of this book. This entire novel was told in the first person by Dr. Watson, and I absolutely loved his perspective. Holmes is sharp and witty, delights is delivering shocking statements with utter nonchalance that never fail to scandalize Dr. Holmes, and made me giggle and sometimes throw back my head and laugh! That was my favorite aspect of these stories, the juxtaposition of the two men, one buttoned up and proper, one unorthodox and untamable. I can only imagine how charming people of that time found these stories to be, but I had a great time reading them.

I have trashed out and tasted each of these cases.
The cases seem interesting to me, but they are minor cases in the life of Sherlock Holmes. Some cases are hastily closed and it is noticeable that they have been published in magazines, although I must say that they provide data on the life of the great detective. For example: in one case Irene Adler and Holmes meet and this will be important.
The cases are not linear in time. They jump between the years because in some of them Watson is married and lives with Mary, while in others Watson lives at 221b Baker Street.
It is a book for those who wish to learn about smaller cases in the history of the great couple.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #3), Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It was first published on 14 October 1892; the individual stories had been serialised in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892.

Widać, że seria zaczyna się robić coraz bardziej schematyczna, a szkoda, bo uwielbiam postać Sherlocka.

A bit of a disappointment, if I’m being honest, especially after the energy that came with the first two novels. The stories are quite short, which means that there isn’t enough time to set up the mystery/adventure adequately. It was often the case that I found the solutions to be hurried or cheap, sometimes being able to predict them from the very first page or so (though I am not sure how much of this is now owed to my being steeped in Sherlock rhetoric for so long).

The only story I thought was magnificent was A Scandal in Bohemia. The rest were middling, and some were poor (I am thinking of A Case of Identity, The Red-Headed League, The Speckled Band, and especially The Copper Beeches).

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Mycroft and Moriarty are on the way.

So, I volunteer at a library, in what the librarians call the "Popular Library," which consists of the area with the DVDs, music CDs and of course, the audiobooks. The majority of the titles in the audiobook section are romance novels. It struck me as a hilarious idea, and indeed, each of the audiobooks I've stuck in the CD player they have there to listen to for a few minutes has borne that out. Romance novel dialogue is barely okay on the page- can you imagine all that "Oh, FABIO, your gorgeous quivering member is so BIG! OOH BABY, LET'S DO LIKE THEY DO ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL!" stuff being said out loud? It really is just as bad as you'd think.

This being my only experience with audiobooks, you can understand that I was somewhat apprehensive about listening to Sherlock Holmes on audiobook, especially with stories I'd not read before like this particular collection. I felt like the prose could certainly tend towards the melodramatic and could extremely easily sway into the land of the cheesy, and I was reluctant to see that happen.

However, nothing of the kind was the case. These dramatizations by BBC Radio were almost entirely and uniformly excellent. The radio format suits these tales admirably, and I could just see some family sitting around a radio in the 1930s on the edge of their seat with some of these. I was on the edge of my seat through these as well(in my case the seat was most likely on the subway though, which made for some shocking reminders of reality when the train swung to a stop). Also, it's a great bonus that the guy playing Sherlock (Clive Merrison) has a really sexy voice, and the Watson can really sell a "dark and stormy night" like nobody's business.

As for the stories themselves, there are several really excellent and creative ones in here where one really hasn't the slightest idea where the end is going to come from, or how Sherlock is going to defeat the villain. My personal favorites were "A Scandal in Bohemia" (this is where Irene Adler is introduced, just by the by), "The Red Headed League," (truly delightful and playful plot) "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The Man with the Twisted Lip." The dialogue is fantastic, the plotting moves along quickly and believably, and Sherlock Holmes usually has just enough trouble to make you think that he is human, and each plot is totally solvable once you go back and pay attention to what you missed.

Only quibbles: Has anyone else noticed that Arthur Conan Doyle's marriage plots are kind of boring and all alike? It almost feels like someone told him that he hadn't written enough romance and he threw it in grudgingly to make somebody happy, but was a little too resentful to put any effort into it more than once, and so all the plots kind of sound the same? It's always some girl's annuity that is at issue, always some malicious and poor relative. Really annoying. He also really did seem to think that Americans were a bunch of uncivilized hicks- every American character in here fed some sort of stereotype. I suppose that's not all that surprising when you're writing suspense stories for your home populace about an exotic Other of some kind, though.

Those things don't really bother me so much though, just some observations, in the spirit of Holmes and all.

Listening to The Sign of the Four next!
