I can't add much to the pages and pages of reviews of Sherlock Holmes. Because of a disability, I put off reading the collected works of Arthur Conan Doyle, specifically Holmes. The books were so big I couldn't hold them long enough to even attempt reading. When I finally got a Kindle it was the first thing I downloaded. And I'm so grateful I did. If you've ever even remotely considered picking up Doyle's most famous masterpieces, go for it!! And, as always readers, ENJOY!!

I absolutely adore Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s writing style. There‘s a charm to it that doesn‘t bore you and instead keeps you wanting to read more and more. Having read both of the volumes of the complete novels and stories, most of the ones that stuck in my mind were from the first volume, hence the four-star rating on this one.

An excellent collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. I think I’ve read them all now. Reading the entire volume at once is
a little daunting, but I will always reread a novel or a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Holmes is back! I had read the entire The Complete Sherlock Holmes Vol I the year before I began graduate school. I truly enjoyed the book and found myself an immediate fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s writing. Picking up Volume II was ambitious. The book is over 600 pages long! However, in between my readings of novels that I wasn’t too interested in, I told myself I would get through The Return of Sherlock Holmes, a book within the book. I was hooked on the short stories: The Adventure of the Dancing Men, The Adventure of the Priory School, and The Adventure of the Second Stain. These stories made up 230 pages (to be fair) and were some of my favorite reads. From the very first story, The Adventure of the Empty House, I made quick notes of the time and events that had passed between the two volumes as a refresher to my memory: The three-year time lapse, Mary Watson’s death, Mrs. Hudson’s support of her tenants and the not entirely hopeless Lestrade. I amazed myself at how quickly I read through these stories and was reminded that I have always loved a good mystery. This book is one of my favorites and cheapest (a $6.00 Half Price Books find) and I am glad to have added it to my reading list and home library.

Người cầu toàn như vậy lại bao dung cho sai lầm của người khác, phải bao dung cho bản thân mới có thể bao dung cho người khác được. Và nữa là mình thấy bản thân sáng dạ hơn tí khi đọc, vì so với lúc đọc cuốn đầu, giờ đây, những bước đi của Holmes mình phân nào hiểu được trước khi nghe giải thích. Một điểm nữa khiến mình u mê ở Holmes là việc không ngừng học hỏi thế giới này, trong vụ án hàng xóm ở tập 1, khi người vợ dấu chồng về đứa con riêng của cô ấy, cả người chồng và Holmes đều suy đoán sự che dấu của người vợ liên quan đến người đàn ông khác, phát hiện ra sự việc, người chồng dang tay chấp nhận đứa con, Holmes đã nhờ Watson nhắc nhở anh về họ khi anh tự phụ về bản thân, không chỉ đơn thuần phá án. Và cả trong vị ba sinh viên, khi mà thủ phạm gục mặt trong xấu hổ, Holmes bảo " Lỗi lầm là bản chất của con người, anh muốn tôi nói thay anh?" Chưa bao giờ hết bất ngờ vì con người này, nhưng nghĩ lại thì cũng đúng thôi, anh ta diệt trừ tội ác, nhưng tội ác cũng muôn hình vạn trạng, lỗi lầm cũng chỉ là một trong những nguyên nhân. " Sherlock Holmes có tài làm cho đầu óc thư giãn bất cứ lúc nào anh muốn ", quả là thứ phải học lâu lắm để đạt được, chú ý chú ý, mình dùng việc chuyển đổi luân phiên các hoạt động và không để cho đầu óc tập trung vô thức (lướt thiết bị điện tử) thay vì thế sẽ là nhìn vô thức ( nhìn ra cây cối, nhìn vô định), có vậy đầu óc không bị mệt mỏi một cách vô ích.

I finally read all these stories. Found this (and the corresponding volume 1) at a yard sale for 10 dollars. Well worth reading especially if you just want to read one story or your favorite story real quick before bed or on your break at work.

I will say I think the later Holmes stories lack the same charm the earlier ones do, but still, what an enjoyable way to spend time with a book. The entire Holmes collection is something I like to re-read every few years, and for good reason. Quick, gripping detective stories are a nice little thrill, and I like this spot in the middle of the road between cozy and dark. Great place to start if you want to read more classics but find them to be intimidating.

I've read some Sherlock Holmes in the past but this is the first time I'm reading all of them in English (I've previously read all of them in Chinese). I think the nice thing about these stories is a.) Aside for the 4 novella (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Hound of Baskersvilles, The Valley of Fear) all of the stories are short stories, so they are pretty low commitment and b.) With maybe a couple exceptions, we all know how the story is gonna end: Holmes solves the mystery crime. There's just some amount of comfort from knowing that Holmes and Watson were always gonna save the day (you know, except that one time with Moriaty...), and the only suspense is figuring out how on earth the mystery is going to be untangled. And also there are just something appealing to the setting of Victorian England, at least as experienced by two reasonably well to do gentlemen. This specific edition of the collection from Barns and Noble Classics is especially nice because it came with some good essays from a "Holmsian Scholar" as well as some other commentary by Doyle himself, which adds a lot of nice context. There also a lot of footnotes and endnotes that explained arcane words (like the various kinds of horse-pulled carriages) that were very helpful.

I have read sherlock holmes stories and it is indeed unpredictable and all of these are unique crime stories.

Not as strong as the first volume, the second volume (which begins with The Return of Sherlock Holmes) lacks much of the energy of the first half of the Holmes canon. Perhaps knowing some of the background influenced my opinion, but these stories do feel like they were written by a man who was sick of his creation (and that’s not even including the few that may have been written by someone else altogether). Overall, the riddles aren’t quite as complex, and these stories didn’t grab me the way the first half did. I had no trouble putting the volume down for weeks at a time between stories.

There was still something fun about returning to Sherlock’s world. I delayed reading the second volume simply because I enjoyed the first half so much and wanted to savor my introduction to all of these tales. Perhaps the second volume wasn’t quite worth the wait, but I’m glad I read it. Recommended.

It was very good, although I think the first book was better. The more I read, the less shocking the reveals became. I was able to predict a number of the stories' conclusions. This may have been a result of reading over a thousand pages of Holmes mysteries, however. But I think Doyle also started to burn out a little. The mysteries became less mysterious, the adventures became less adventurous, the crimes became less criminal (seriously, a great number of the stories involve no criminal behavior or police involvement). It seems Doyle was a bit limited in his imagination regarding the motives people use, because he basically repeats the same 3 or 4 motives (mainly inheritance, revenge, love/infidelity) which generally makes it easier to predict the outcome. Nevertheless, the book is an excellent read because of the great characters of Watson and Holmes and their complicated relationship. Doyle keeps the immeasurably satisfying irony and sarcasm at a high level even if he can't maintain a high level of intrigue. I recommend reading both volumes, but do so gradually over n extended period of time. Marathon reading of these books will only result in minimized suspense.
