PERFECT. This book is my favourite in the series, if only for that ending. I fangirl-squee every time I read it, and I never fangirl-squee.

P.S. I love Anne and Gilbert together and Gilbert is wonderful

Pure happiness. New characters come Anne's way in this book, but the dear ones stay close (even Mrs. Allen comes back in briefly!). A long review would do little justice to this book. Anne, in all her college glory, is swept away in the romantic house called Patty's Place. Her roommates and housekeeper are part of her life for much of this book. Phil was absolutely a hoot and adorable!!

How she did it, I don't know, but the author has weaved more than one story into Anne's life. Every person holds an interest, even if it's merely to bring a little laughter. There is sadness and tears and learning and growing up through Anne's college years. That adultish age when your friends are marrying and life is changing, is a tough time. Ultimately, the ending is what brings this story to the very moment all have been waiting for. I smile every time...it's sweet and blissful.

Was I annoyed with some parts of the story? (such as Anne galloping off with a certain guy at one point?) Well, yes, I was, but all of it is realistic and the humour throughout makes it a smashing hit. I really think this book is one of my favorites of the series second to book 8!!

So, if you desire a story to sweep you away from those little things in life you'd rather not think about, this book is just the right choice!

Third in the Green Gables series and we meet Anne again between the ages of 18-20.

A lot goes on in these years, she has a fair few marriage proposals, studying for a BA and a host of social events.

Anne is really starting to grow up now and I'd say she has lost her charming imagination. Its a shame but I'm still endeared to her and look forward to seeing where the path leads her next.

4.5 ⭐️

These books seem to be “slice of life” books, rather than plot-driven books. Though this one and Anne of Avonlea meandered a bit in the middle of the stories, I still found them engaging and a joy to read. Montgomery was a fabulous writer! I don’t think any other author could have meandered and gotten a near-5-star review from me (except for Tolkien) but she certainly deserves it for her wonderful characterization and warm, touching romance.

“Harvest is ended and summer is gone,” this begins, and there has always been such poetry and simplicity in that autumnal opening that I come back to it each autumn.

There is something so steadfast and constant about L. M. Montgomery’s writing that realizing it is also great can take me by surprise. Even now, after so many rereads. Anne has always been there, waiting on the shelf for me to revisit, in this series about nothing in particular - and yet every book has humor and whimsy and strength of character and vicissitudes of life.

There’s a sincerity here, paired with beautiful writing, and it means Anne lives. She experiences friendship and joy and jealousy and illness and death - poor decisions - pretty dresses - and her story never becomes tumultuous but stays perfectly balanced. Gilbert! Christine Stuart! College (what do they learn there?)! Phil and Jonas! Ruby! The baking powder story! Did I mention Gilbert?

I am charmed and delighted every time I read this. It can be uneven (much like life), with attention given to plots and characters I don’t enjoy as much (ditto), but - this is great.

This is one of my very favourite books in the whole series and is probably the one I have read the most next to Anne of Green Gables.

I ship Anne and Gilbert so hard; they are one of my top favourite literary couples so I’m so happy with how things *finally* resolve!

Patty’s Place is so cosy…I’d love to poke around and chat with Priscilla, study with Stella, laugh with Phil, cook with Aunt Jimsie, and pet the cats.

Everything about this book is just stunning: the setting, the story, the characters.

Quotes….

“The little things of life, sweet and excellent in their place, must not be the things lived for; the highest must be sought and followed; the life of heaven must be begun here on earth.”

“‘Oh, Anne, things are so mixed-up in real life. They aren’t clear-cut and trimmed off, as they are in novels.’”
