Short, beautiful, inspiring- just like one of her better short stories. Only- it began to drag a little after she started talking about her married life- hope that wasn't a metaphor for something. :-(

This book would be a delight to any fans of Montgomery’s work. It presents fun insights into the background to her story (including the true story that inspired Anne of Green Gables!). Reading her words on her history, one can note just how much of herself she has written into her books, from Anne’s trademark place-naming to the Story Girl’s penchant for tale weaving. Her love for the environment around her, so prevalent in her writing, is never more apparent than in this memoir. Interesting anecdotes abound, including Montgomery’s time working at a newspaper in Halifax. All in all, an entertaining read, especially for those for whom her books hold a special place in their hearts.

Interesting and entertaining autobiography, primarily about L. M. Montgomery's early life as well as some inspiring thoughts for writers

Non ci sono parole per la straordinaria capacità narrativa di questa autrice finalmente liberata dall'infantilizzazione della scrittura che ha dovuto subire in Italia. Capace di fare di un'autobiografia quasi una poesia, con quella delicatezza di tutti i suoi romanzi, quella capacità di toccare i sogni del lettore soltanto per il suo modo di scrivere. Straordinaria veramente. Ho trovato l'ultima parte (dove sono presenti le sue lettere di viaggio) un po' appiccicaticcia, fuori ritmo ma il resto ha compensato parecchio. È interessante la visione del suo percorso di scrittrice, e l'umiltà che la contraddistingue nonostante aver dato i natali a romanzi di meraviglioso spessore stilistico. In pochi sanno parlare come lei, quasi nessuno direi, e di fronte ai racconti della campagna, degli alberi mi sono commossa e ho subito provveduto all'acquisto del volumetto " i boschi e le stagioni". Che dire, grazie a Enrico de Luca, per la sua traduzione, per la cura delle note, per la capacità di entrare in quello stile, di una donna che ricordiamo è nata a metà '800. E per questa ragione non è possibile semplificarne il linguaggio e mantenerne l'integrezza. Grazie davvero di questo splendido lavoro di scavo linguistico,magistrale come sempre!

a bit rambly but in an extremely enjoyable way

Oczywiście czytałam polskie wydanie (dostępne jako ebook na empikgo) ale jako że go tu nie ma to zaznaczam to.

Tak jak podejrzewałam przed lekturą - jej największym minusem jest oryginalny rok wydania (1917) ponieważ jest to środek kariery Lucy Maud i przez to ma się potworne poczucie niedosytu. Książka jakby urwana co jest dość oczywiste ale i tak boli.
Poza tym poznajemy wiele ciekawostek z życia Montgomery, wiele nawiązań które pojawią się w Ani czy Historycne.
Całość faktycznie ukazuję trud dążenia młodej Maud do wydania swojej książki i spełnienia marzeń.
Dla fanów Lucy Maud Montgomery i jej twórczości pozycja bardzo warta uwagi!

Uneven — a mix of new writing and recycled journal entries, some of which were travelogues which I always find dull. But there are some charming bits, as well as spots where you can see seeds of books she hadn’t yet written at this time, particularly the Emily books. I also enjoyed the descriptions of her writing process (hard work and a lot of dedicated time in the early hours) and wish there had been more time spent on that.

I enjoyed this personal account of LM Montgomery’s life, but thought the detailed journal entries from her honeymoon travels were a little out of place.

I've been a fan of L. M. Montgomery since I first read Anne of Green Gables as a child. I can't believe that it took me so long to pick up this little memoir. It is a very quick read but full of the lovely prose you expect from Ms. Montgomery. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this author's life in her own words. Reading her journals will definitely be next on my list.

Montgomery's life was as wonderful as her stories.

This is not truly the "story of my career" but rather a collection of essays about random events in the early life of LMM. Perhaps she thought her story wouldn't be worth reading? There are some charming anecdotes connected to stories she wrote about, but also a lot of scenery descriptions and journal entries from her honeymoon in Scotland. It lacked cohesiveness.

As a huge fan of the Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon collection, I was happy to find a kobo bargain and download her entire works... over 13000 pages of of her beautifully written tales, many set in Prince Edward Island.

The last book of this collection was her own story (or at least that of her early life and up until she left PEI for Ontario after her marriage). It was interesting to learn of how many rejections she had received for the beloved Anne of Green Gables and to learn that she had read a news story where an elderly couple had received an orphan of the wrong gender.

I enjoyed learning a little bit more about LMM and will continue reading the tales that I have not yet enjoyed.
