An enjoyable little read, although not nearly as revelatory as I was hoping. I had dreamt of her describing more of her personal struggles but it seems this collection of writing was published before many of those instances came to pass. Still, it contains her classic descriptions of beautiful scenery as well as windows into her perpetual ambition.

The only autobiography by my favorite author? Of course I'm going to read it!

I ran out of the house—it wasn't big enough to contain my joy, I must have all outdoors for that—and danced down the lane under the birches in a frenzy of delight, hugging to my heart the remembrance of those words.

A few weeks ago, I rewatched that Gossip Girl clip where Blair is asked if she could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who she would choose. I finally have an answer of my own (second place goes to the vlogbrothers, hell yeah.) Lucy Montgomery is for sure one kindred spirit of mine, not only because she wrote one of my favourite books ever but also because she had such a clear memory of what it was like to be a child. Whenever she mentioned the intensity of her suffering and happiness and embarrassment I just kept thinking oh I get that. Most of the chapters spoke to me so personally I had to stop reading several times to just *scream on the inside* because her prose is just so gorgeous; that's the word for it. While the last chapters about her trips were not as captivating, her writing makes up for it. Describing feelings with such poignant accuracy while constantly bringing forward her appreciation of nature just made this book basically tailor made for me. I connected with her so much I simply know I'd love sit down with her and chat, to listen to her talk about writing; to tell her about we think about it now; to show her Fleabag and Pride and Prejudice. What a warm woman she must've been. This is one of my favourite memoirs ever.

This short memoir is a collection of a series of articles the author wrote discussing her aspirations, influences, and experiences. I rated it so highly because of the connections Montgomery offers between her childhood and two of her most well-known books. Since I’ve seen the modern-day versions of the sites referenced, I felt a special connection which enhanced my enjoyment. Finally, I love her style: dreamy & practical; magical & straightforward; and lyrical & conversational.

Moments of interesting details but also moments of such boredom. The best section was the middle where she talks about her entire path to becoming an author.

Short little book but engaging and you can really see where Anne came from!
