An engaging trip down my bookish memory lane. But it's not in the same league as the Anne books (especially the lack of humour) and how creepy is Dean Priestly? I never spotted that as a young teenager but now I'm sending up distress signals as I read.

Me he enamorado de Emily, me he enamorado de L.M.

I loved Anne, I loved Valancy, I loved Rilla, I loved Jocelyn, and Gay, and Donna, but I could not, would not, and will not love Emily. I didn't like her from the beginning and I was afraid that feeling would persist. She is just not the kind of heroine that Mrs. Montgomery usually makes. She's too smart, too beautiful, too strange, and last and most important, too perfect. I couldn't swallow her conversation, ambitions, or dreams. Everything she did annoyed me. She didn't make blunders, like Anne, she didn't fall in love, like Valancy, she couldn't be as realistic as Rilla, and she didn't have any of the problems or quirks that endeared Jocelyn, Gay, and Donna to you.
Her personality was flat and I felt no empathy for her. I didn't sympathize with her problems or care about her victories. She just didn't do anything wrong, and in that, you lose a lot of a character's appeal.

Niezwykle przyjemny urywek z życia Emilki, wystylizowany wieloma motywami powielonymi z serii o Ani.

With this review, we're revisiting another one of my old favourite, my comfort reads, the books I can still pick up and read with a great deal of pleasure, almost as much as when I was curled up in my bed as a girl, discovering this world for the first time. Which is all to say that this review is naturally heavily coloured by all of who I was and who I am now, and how this book has fit into my personal mythology for many, many years.

Note: The rest of this review has been withdrawn due to the changes in Goodreads policy and enforcement. You can read why I came to this decision here.

n  Emily of New Moonn has a much darker quality than the Anne of Green Gables series – and Emily as a character is not nearly as likable or sweet as Anne. But she seems real. Although LMM tends to stylize/idealize her heroines a little, you can sense the three-dimensional quality of Emily's personality from the first chapter. Anne is 3D too, of course, but Anne's character tends to emerge little by little, whereas Emily dominates her story right from the start. And there's plenty of attention to Emily's worst qualities – pride and a nasty temper being the main two. As beloved as Anne is, Emily has more interesting possibilities. When I read these books as a child, I identified less with Emily, but found her fascinating all the same. And rereading as an adult, I'm more aware of the way LMM is playing with twists on the expected in these books.

The plot follows basically the same arc as Anne of Green Gables, with orphaned Emily coming to live in a farmhouse on Price Edward Island; but whereas in Anne you get comic scenes like Diana and the cordial, or apologizing to Mrs. Rachel Lynde – in Emily you get adultery, hatred, gossip, and several extremely creepy, possibly psychotic characters. Teddy's mother is horrible, and Dean Priest a little weird – I notice the dark tone so much more rereading now than I did fifteen years ago!

Bottom line: One of LMM's more complex and interesting stories and heroines, if not as heartwarming and lovely as the Anne series.

Great story, filled with some terrible, potentially triggering, adults. The teacher, Miss Brownell is a sadistic monster, the local doctor is a misogynist who treats his daughter like an unwanted stray cat, Emily's aunt Elizabeth is cruel and unjust and don't get me started on Teddy's weirdo mother. Which is one of the reasons this story is so compelling; unfortunately, many of us knew adults like this when we were children. As this book points out, there is one system of justice for adults and another, often broken, for children.

In many ways, this book ressembles "Anne of Green Gables" a lot. It speaks of a young girl who admires the world's beauty while growing up amongst family and friends. However, "Emily of New Moon" touched me a lot more. There was something about Emily and her personality that appealed to me a lot. The same goes for her struggles which, in my opinion, were really cruel and harsh and made me care for her even more.
I also really liked the fact that Emily actually grows up in this book and goes out a little bit in the world (something that I missed in Anne of Green Gables). All of this made sure that I was never bored, and I gradually grew to care a lot about poor and sweet Emily.
Emily is an aspiring writer/poetess, and this novel does contain long passages of diary entries which I had to get used to. Nevertheless, I grew to appreciate even those because they added very much to her story and her growing up. All in all, a really endearing and honest story that I'm keen on continuing very soon with the next novel in the series.

One thing my husband and I enjoy doing is reading a book out loud together. We take turns choosing one of our favorite books, which the other person hasn't read, and we read it together. There's no surprise here that he hadn't read Emily of New Moon because it definitely looks like a girly book, but I think the first in this series by L.M. Montgomery is a classic, so we read it together. I don't highly recommend the sequels to this book. It seems the author just felt some responsibility to explain what happened to Emily and they don't carry the same magic the first book has.

Every time I read this book, I find more things to like about it. My husband described it as the most emotional book he had ever read. :) We both felt it brought out questions about how we treat and raise children and how we help or hurt the progress of individuals around us. This book has also taught me to look for more beauty in the world and enjoy the moment. When L.M. Montgomery is at her best, I think she is an excellent writer and I feel this book ranks as one of her best.
