I love the Anne of Green Gables series, so I was fully expecting to love this! And I did! These are the type of books that make you feel so warm and happy inside, despite still having darker undercurrents. And I just had so much fun wandering dreamily through these pages and enjoying the exquisite language within them. I just love L M Montgomery's writing and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series and watch Emily grow up. That is my favourite part about all of Montgomery's series - watching these beloved characters grow and develop and learn because she does it so well .

T H O U G H T S

- I just adored the writing style! The imagery is STUNNING and the descriptions of the setting just make me want to curl up inside the book and live there. I want so much to visit Prince Edward Island now, because L M Montgomery has convinced me. But the writing just made the whole book feel magical, and paired with Emily's amazing imagination, it was just delicious. I also adored how much actual writing there was in the book. Emily likes writing poetry, and towards the end of the book she begins to write novels. I just loved reading about something that I personally love doing in such a beautiful environment.

- I haven't really decided whether I like this or Anne of Green Gables better. It has been a long time since I read it. From what I can remember, the writing was more beautiful in Emily, but Anne was a much more endearing character, in my opinion. She has been through more than Emily, and it just made her a lot kinder. I did like Emily, but I found her a bit selfish and vain sometimes, though I suppose that is part of the "charm". I think I will like her better when she matures a bit in the sequels, because she did grow up a bit towards the end. But I did prefer the setting and the writing in Emily, just not the characters.

I don't really have much more to say, other than this was a beautiful story that is just so fun and delightful to read. If you like the more well known Anne of Green Gables series, you will definitely like this one. It has a similar feel to it, with all the scrapes that Emily gets into, but I also loved a lot that Emily was a writer, and I can't wait to read the next books and see how this goes. I love reading about people writing, and this book just gave me that. I adored it.

میدانی امیلی تو زیبا نیستی اما چهره ات طوری است که آدم را یاد چیزهای زیبا می اندازد و این موهبتی ارزشمندتر از زیبایی است

It took a while for this book to grow on me. I’ve always loved Anne of Green Gables, and I know that for some readers the Emily books are even better. I think that might depend on which heroine you meet first because, while I grew to appreciate Emily Byrd Starr, she’ll never usurp Anne Shirley in my heart.
“To love is easy and therefore common - but to understand - how rare it is!”

Somehow Emily’s story manages to be both easier and less idyllic than that of Anne. Emily gets to experience the complete love and adoration of a parent, which Anne never did. But Anne’s experience at Green Gables, though Marilla could sometimes be as stubborn and old fashioned as Emily’s Aunt Elizabeth, seemed far more pleasant than Emily’s experience at New Moon. Both little farms sound lovely, and are places I enjoy visiting through their respective books, but Green Gables is clearly better in my mind. Both are orphan girls, but Emily depends upon the charity of callous relatives, whereas Anne finds herself loved by strangers and invited into an odd little family with which she shares no blood ties. And, though they are both charming, romantic, unique little girls obsessed with the beauty of the world around them who dream of becoming famous authoresses, as they term it, I found myself unable to care about Emily anywhere near as much as I cared about Anne.
“She will love deeply, she will suffer terribly, she will have glorious moments to compensate.”

However, around the time I was 3/4 of the way through this book, my apathy began to dissipate. Emily’s story seemed less predictable than Anne’s, and there are a few things about her story that I have yet to guess. I continued reading Anne’s story even though I was nearly positive about how things would turn out because I love her as a character. I’ll continue Emily’s story because I genuinely want to know where she ends up. There were a couple of very interesting side plots, as well. The portrayal of adults in this book, and the ways in which they treat children, was believably awful. There were quite a few people who I felt deserved a punch in the throat. But they grow and change as the story progresses, just as Emily does. And I did truly grow to care about Emily. She lives life to the absolutely fullest and deeply appreciates every lovely moment. How could I, or her judgmental relatives, not grow to love her?
“Life has something for you—I feel it. Go forward to meet it fearlessly, dear.”

While I can’t say that I loved this book with my whole heart like I hoped I would, I did really like it, and ended up enjoying it more than I expected after the first few chapters. I’m interested to see where Montgomery takes the story, and what journeys Emily will take as she embarks upon adulthood.

Emily. My dearest Emily; my childhood friend and childhood idol, my inspiration and my consolation. There are books so special, read in such a tender age, that they become part of you. I wouldn't be the person that I am today if it wasn't for Emily Byrd Starr.

It had always seemed to Emily, ever since she could remember, that she was very, very near to a world of wonderful beauty. Between it and herself hung only a thin curtain; she could never draw the curtain aside-- but sometimes, just for a moment, a wind fluttered it and then it was as if she caught a glimpse of the enchanting realm beyond-- only a glimpse-- and heard a note of unearthly music.

Emily is a dreamer. A hopeful artist, poetry-writer, and a whimsical little creature with pointed ears and almost violet eyes. She is touched with a child's honesty and a strong sense of righteousness. She is constantly making up beautiful scenes in her mind, and she cannot write them down fast enough. But even though her pen is in constant motion, her mouth is hardly ever moved. She is quiet. Not necessarily because she is shy, but because she is cautious of her words; she doesn't spill them randomly. She values them.

Emily's life is bittersweet. While she is able to perceive all the glistening beauty in the world, she is touched by sorrow, her father's death and the stern eyes and expectations of her aunts. She is constantly misunderstood by everyone – even herself. But still, she lives. She hopes, dreams, laughs and she lives. She is able to observe and appreciate the little wonders in life, which people so easily overlook. She is someone to admire and someone to aspire to.

She will love deeply, she will suffer terribly, she will have glorious moments to compensate.

Even now, this story pulls at my heartstrings. Emily still wins my heart, over and over again. As I started to reread this cherished book this morning, I thought I would just read a chapter or two, but I couldn't put the book down. I am completely under Emily's spell, and yet again I find myself wondering how my childhood would have been without her. Would it be there at all?

The little girl who used to pour over the Anne books would be appalled if she knew that now, nearly ten years later, I am writing a review to state that I am now a steadfast Emily fan. (Though Anne Shirley will always hold a special place in my heart.)

Something about Emily and her story speaks to me in a way that the Anne books don't. The story has more of a hold on me, always drawing me in to the fullest degree and speaking to both my heart and soul. And Emily is a character that I deeply relate to, down to even some of her smallest quirks and flaws.

And, lastly, the writing alone sends chills of delight through me. I've had to stop so many times, just to take in the sheer beauty of Montgomery's words. My commonplace notebook is filled with quotes and snippets from each book in this trilogy, and I always come away from them, inspired and with the itch to write my own stories tingling in my fingers.

There is no doubt in my mind that these books aren't just books. They're magic. Magic of a very special kind. The kind of magic I think every good book should have a sprinkling of, and the kind of magic I hope to someday weave into my own works.

Thank you, L. M. Montgomery, for sending your magic out into the world for future generations, such as mine, to read.

This book is just... perfect. *sigh* I absolutely loved it! It was so good! Anne of Green Gables is a masterpiece; however, I can't compare it with Emily of New Moon. There is a certain different aspect with Emily. Anne is simply Anne (although there is nothing 'simple' about her), and Emily is particularly Emily. Anyway, I highly recommend this book! It is SO WONDERFUL! :)

Can I squeeze this into my mid-century women reading project if it came.out in 1923? I read all the Anne of Green Gables books but for some reason was never really interested in Emily as a child.

Emily is orphaned and moves in with her mother's family in New Moon, PEI. She has to navigate rules, school, and friends while also managing a passion for writing (the joke here seems to be the passion without the talent, for now.) There are a lot of similarities to Anne and I wonder how far down the road from each other these girls are; PEI not being huge.
