I wish viciously that I'd read this as a child, because goodness, there is so much here that brought back what it felt like to be enraptured by words, and thinking that putting them together was the single best thing I could do with my life. How wonderful Emily is. Extraordinary. Big sigh.

3.5 Starr (jeje)

intensely strange first-time read, like meeting your wife's fraternal twin 30 years into ur marriage-- every review i've read of this has irritated me because imo it's deeply tragic both to be like "this quiet bookish girl is MUCH better than her POPULAR SISTER" and also to say "her sister is popular,, for a reason." anyhow, you can't mistake their mom.

and anyhow, i thought this was lovely. like i said, the voice-- it's the voice-- it's rly fuckin got the middle grade PASSIONS that lmm's peers and heirs routinely struggle to find. as a whole, this felt a little scattered in both quality and focus-- which i think sometimes works for its benefit, in a certain exploratory softness: there is an expansive and generous view of the adult cast all in their own lives, and what emily can expect of them, and how she navigates it, that kept surprising me. there is also a heavier didacticism than i expected, particularly in the first and last sections, and a frequently startling defensive tone, which does make sense in the context of the genre then and in how autobiographical it is (down to the letter excerpts apparently being inspired by lmm's own rediscovered childhood writing??) but which nevertheless disrupts ur own comfortable devotion to emily. that said, the letter excerpts, absolutely killer, i wish every book did this, ur all kings to me. when her teacher critiques her best writing??? GET HER.

also, as a book, absolutely chock-full of mean middle-aged and elderly lesbians; should be cited as a quota for all children's books; i would have expected no less. aunt elizabeth made me cry like crazy. the four fifths mark also introduces a 35yo man we are meant to like very much who expresses romantic love for our 12yo heroine and that he will wait for her to grow up to marry her and like! that kind of killed my vibe. that's the kind of back-and-forth in quality and tone i'm talking about. like, what? and why. and still!!!!! the parts of this book that sing, sing.

Though perhaps not as famous as Anne of Green Gables, this is my favorite L.M. Montgomery book (and one of my favorite books of all time).

May 2016: Re-reading for the Kindred Spirits group readalong.

August 2021 Reread for the Litsy #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead. Still my very favorite book.

This series is so dear to me! I cannot describe how much it meant to me, what a gorious friend I found in Emily, and how her journey to become a writer and a woman fit so well with my own heart and aspirations. I hope to visit these beautiful books again; Emily will be a kindred spirit for life!

It seems that L.M. Montgomery is either a hit or a miss with me. With this book, Emily of New Moon, it was definitely a miss. I did enjoy the beginning of the story, especially the loving relationship Emily had with her father. Once Emily moved in with her Aunts Elizabeth, Laura and cousin Jimmy, each chapter of the book became slightly redundant for me. I did enjoy the storyline with the friends that she made, Ilse, Teddy and Perry but it wasn’t enough for this readers overall enjoyment.

I went into this book with great expectations having read Anne of Green Gables which I wasn’t a fan of, three stars and then recently reading The Blue Castle which I truly enjoyed. Five big ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

Perhaps, as many members have said, if I read this book when I was a child, I would have enjoyed it more. Would definitely like to read something else by the author, something along the lines of The Blue Castle. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

When I was little, my mom passed on to me and my sister all of her glorious, hard-back books from her childhood. Louisa May Alcott, Gay Melody (look it up), and, her favorites, The Anne books. She told us how her father, the quiet newspaper editor, took her to the library and insisted she had to read about Anne Shirley. Something about the book jacket made Mom sneer, but her dad insisted, so she read it. As we all know had to happen, Mom fell in love. And when her daughters were old enough, she insisted we had to read them. Her older daughter appreciated them, but her younger daughter (yours truly) was the true kindred spirit.

Mom told me she was just sure there had been more books, but her collection stopped at Anne of Ingleside. Then one day, Mom went to the grocery store, which meant I got to go to the bookstore in the same strip mall. There it was: Rainbow Valley. Then in a few more months, my personal favorite of the Anne books, Rilla of Ingleside. A publisher had decided to re-release the Anne books. But then came more.

I'd always loved Anne. I am a kindred spirit, after all. But she and I would never have been quite bosom friends. Emily Byrd Starr, though. Oh, Emily and I are cut from the same cloth. First reading Emily of New Moon when I was about the age Emily is in that book was like coming home.

I read Emily's Quest regularly, whenever I'm feeling particularly tempestuous. But it occurred to me this weekend I don't think I've actually read the entire series from the start for many, many years. Since I'm feeling rather dark and stormy, now seemed a good time. I think it was the right choice because while I will never be able to recapture the thrill of finding Emily for the first time, I will never be sorry to spend my time with her.
