وقتی بزرگان، بزرگی می‌کنند.


1- عشق اول از کتاب‌هایی است که با نامِ خود، دال مرکزی روایت را مشخص می‌کنند. البته جزئیات روایت، شخصیت‌سازی‌ها، ساخت جملات و نحوه پردازشِ آنها، و در یک کلام کلیت روایت این داستان بلند، به ما نشان می‌دهد با چه نویسنده‌ای طرف ایم.
در برخی نحله‌های فلسفی این برداشت موجود است که: «فیلسوف به مثابه جغد مینروا، تاریخ و زمانۀ خود را عقلانی تصویر می‌کند.» یعنی کار فیلسوف آن است که به تاریخی که در آن غرق است واکنش نشان بدهد. البته این ادعا و برداشت که به «تاریخ» جایگاهی مرکزی می‌دهد، از آوردگاه‌های فلسفی است که تا فلسفه باشد، بر سر آن دعواست؛ اما می‌خواهم استفاده‌ای دیگر از این برداشت برای بررسی برخی پروژه‌های ادبی داشته باشم.
بسیاری، ادبیات را آینۀ تاریخ می‌دانند. یعنی با نظر به ادبیات می‌توان حجاب از بسیاری از جزئیات تاریخی و زیست اجتماعی برداشت. با نمایشنامه‌های ایبسن و تنسی ویلیامز می‌توان به تصویری از جامعه مدرن و معضلات آن رسید. می‌توان با چخوف و تولستوی خواندن به تصویری از جهان روسیه در حوالی قرن 19 رسید. با جمالزاده و دهخدا می‌توان با تاریخ ایران در عصر قجری و پهلوی آشنا شد، اصلا شعرایی مثل میرزاده عشقی نیز، می‌توانند به عنوان تصویری از عصر خود باشند. این برداشت از ادبیات، که می‌توان تاریخی اجتماعی و سیاسی، از آن استخراج کرد، بسیار بسط یافته است و پژوهش‌های جذابی در این حوزه موجود است که در حد آشنایی دست چندم و ناقص، از دریای ایده‌های موجود حظ برده ام. تا اینجا حرف جدیدی نزده‌ام و بند بعدی هم همین‌طور است.
ببینید ما نیز غر می‌زنیم و از جامعه و دولت. از اطراف و اکناف گلایه داریم. اصلا از دعوامون با رخوت و چاپلوسی اهل بوروکراسی و ساختارهای دولتی نگم براتون. تمام این غرنامه‌ها و گلایه‌سرایی‌های امثال من در پستوی تاریخ گم خواهد شد، اما هنرمند اینجا است که کاری مانا می‌کند. غر زدن از اهل بوروکراسی رو می‌خواهی بخوانی؟ بازرس گوگل در پیشِ چشمان توست، اثری به صولت بازرس، در تاریخ می‌ماند، اما غرهای ما دود می‌شوند و به هوا می‌روند.
تورگنیف نیز از ادیبانی است که می‌توان با مطالعه آثار آنها، علاوه بر لذت ادبی، لایه‌ها و جزئیاتی از جامعۀ آن دوران را فهمید که ناب است. در عشق اول دوز این وجه از تورگنیف بسیار در حاشیه است، اما در پدران و پسران، داریم نقاشیِ تورگنیف از ستیز «سنت/تجدد» در بستر روسیه عصر خود را می‌بینیم.

2_ به لطفِ یکی از دوستانِ موافق که پیشنهاد مطالعه این اثر را داده بود، اسپویل شده بودم و می‌دانستم قرار است این پی‌ریزی‌ها به چه بحرانی ختم شود. این واقعه، اسپویل شدن، با اینکه اندکی شعف عنصر تعلیق را در من کشت، اما باعث شد دیگر المان‌ها مثل روایت دقیقِ تورگنیف و ظرایف روایی، شخصیت‌سازی‌ها و توصیف‌های اثر مرا مجذوب کند.
از حسم موقع مطالعه این اثر هرچه بگم، حق مطلب ادا نمی‌شود.
3- من را اگر رها کنند، صبح تا شب عریضه پر می‌کنم و از ناملایمات زندگی، دادِ سخن سر می‌دهم و کاستی‌های خودم را به رخ خودم می‌کشم. برای همین باید با ادبیات ترمز این یابوی سرکش را بکشم. تامل و مکثِ موجود در ادبیات، کیفیتی دارد آرامش‌افزا. در جهانی که از هر طرف با سرعتی سهمگین، تو را به بادِ نقد می‌کشند و آزمون‌ات می‌کنند، مامن امنِ ادبیات و تامل و گسست موجود در آن، ملجا من بوده است.
4- سروش حبیبی عجب مترجمی است. با اینکه در مرگ ایوان ایلیچ و چند اثر دیگر، مترجم‌های دیگری را به استاد ترجیح داده ام، اما موش‌ها و آدم‌ها و عشق اول به من ثابت کرد که سروش حبیبی الحق مترجم درستی است.
گزینش واژگان، روانیِ ترجمه در ضمن ادیبانه بودن و هزار و یک نکته دیگر، ترجمه عشق اول را کم‌نظیر می‌کند. در جایی از داستان، یکی از کاراکترها شروع کرد به خواندن یک شعر/آهنگ و تنها نشانه موجود از آن فراز/بیتِ آخر بود که به جذاب‌ترین وجه ممکن، سروش حبیبی آن را در قالب یک شعر موزون(مبتنی بر هجاها و اوزان شعر کلاسیک فارسی) ترجمه کرده بود و حس طربناک و ریتمیک موقعیت را کاملا منتقل کرد. یعنی از جرئیاتِ مبهوت‌کننده ترجمه هرچه بگم، تمام نمی‌شود.

5- (spoiler alert)
این بخش از تحلیل اثر اندکی اسپویل دارد. در ضمن از جاهایی است که شاید تحلیل چندان پخته‌ای نباشد(جالبه از نقد شدن انقدر می‌ترسم!).
دال مرکزی این اثر، عشق اولِ ولادیمیر است. اما روابط شکل گرفته بین کاراکترهاست که سیر روایی داستان را می‌سازد(جالب بود وقتی یکی از رفقای دانشگاه پرسید داستان درمورد چیست و من گفتم پسری 16ساله عاشق دختری 21ساله شده است که توامان پدرِ پسر هم عاشق دختر است، هم خودم تعجب کردم که این پلات داستانی شبیه سریال‌ها و فیلم‌های آب‌دوغ‌خیاری است که «مثلث عشقی» تشکیل می‌دهند، هم آن رفیقم که ادبیات‌خوان نبود تعجب کرد که من پس از «تورگنیف تورگنیف کردن»، چجوری دارم از داستانی با همچین پلاتِ در ظاهر مبتذلی دفاع می‌کنم.)
جزئیاتِ دفاعی که ازغیرمبتذل بودن این پلات دارم به قدری زیاد است که واقعا اینجا جای مرقوم کردن نیست برایش(در ظاهر قضیه مشخص است که داستان تورگنیف توفیر دارد نسبت عشق‌های تینیجریِ نتفیلیکسی، اما باید بتوان از این موضع دفاع کرد. نباید بخاطر اسم و ابهت تورگنیف از جواب دادن به این سوال طفره بریم.)
اینجا به اختصار یکی از مهم‌ترین وجوهِ عشق از نظر تورگنیف را بولد خواهم کرد. «افق رویداد و دید در عشقPOV». ولادیمیر(جوان16ساله)، عاشقِ زیناییدا، گویی به بردگی او گرفته شده بود و زیناییدا عاشق پدرِ ولادیمیر بود و رامِ او. در بخش‌های پایانی داستان که ولادیمیر آن رفتار پدر، با زیناییدا را می‌بیند و بهت می‌کند، به بهترین نحو ممکن این «افق دید عاشق و معشوق» را نشان داده می‌شود.
غم و حسرت آخر داستان هم واقعا سنگین بود.چیزی شبیه «وداع با اسلحه» همینگوی، اما این دفعه قلبم مچاله شد، با اینکه با تصویر بارانی و نهاییِ همینگوی اینگونه سمپاتی نداشتم، اما تورگنیف نابود کرد.

داستان خیلی زیاد اثرگذار بود جوری که مطمئنم بار دوم نمیخونمش. خیلی زیاد مطمئنم... کاش میشد بیشتر از ۵ ستاره گذاشت...

Cool story. Sincere. Realistic. Fun to read!

Turgenev's novella First Love is one of the most resonant books on young love I have had the pleasure of reading. It is not only a simple but very effective tale on fluttering adolescent hearts, but also a gesture of artistic defiance of an age which demanded a writer to lift the nation. His passionate writing with much pathos, insight and self-awareness shows his talent at it's best when renouncing all the fancy stuff and just describing exactly what love does to one who is new to the most irreplaceable of humanly gifts.

First Love, although a social and romantic story, contains as well a moving portrait of the relationship between father and son (a theme he explored deeper in his novel 'Fathers and Sons'). The novella carried with it a strong sense of real experiences, so it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be Turgenev's most autobiographical work. The prose was beautiful and vivid, and the characters, seeing as in length it's barely over one hundred pages, really had a lasting impression by the end.

One of the key things I admire most about older works of Russian literature, is that although they don't inevitably fit in with the modern day criteria in terms of realistic tendencies, the characters still feel more alive and more believable than most. Though the circumstances they find themselves in the middle of may sometimes seem overly dramatic, there is a fundamental truth that lets the reader form a profound connection with them. Their actions and environment might not seem like reality now, but we humans are built on emotion, and the feeling behind that is universally grand.

Regardless of whether it's 1860 or 2019, young love will always remain a bitch. Where only the few lucky ones emerge without the mental scars.

لم تعجبني ابدا والحمد لله انها لم تكن أطول، وصف تراجيدي مأساوي مطول لقصة المفروض انها قصة حب ووصف مكرر و زائد عن الحد "لفتاة لعوب" لم أجد فيها صدقا اي شيء يمكن أن يعشق وما حصل كان طبيعي جداً اما الغير طبيعي هو أن فتى بالسادس عشرة يمكن أن تمر في ذهنه كل تلك الخواطر والمشاعر وكأنه رجل في الأربعين
القصة قاتمة ومبالغ فيها ولم تكملها إلا لتوهمي لإمكانية حدوث "مفاجأة #ما فينهاية القصة ولكن مع الأسف لم يحصل

This short novella captures all the confusion and naïveté of young love. Turgenev requires only a few pages of understated prose to completely expose his subject: Despite the intolerable pain of heatbreak, and the fact that one might view love as folly, in hindsight or with age, young love nonetheless has an enduring, preternatural strength, against which life's other fruit seem pale in comparison.

I like Turgenev's style. It's softer, more subtle than some of his fellow 19th century Russian writers. He doesn't beat you over the head with a message. This story, as it's title suggests, is about the first love of 16 year old Vladimir, the son of a wealthy Russian family, who falls in love with the 21 year old daughter of their new neighbors. She is a princess, her family with a noble name but without wealth. She leads Vladimir along, and several other young suitors besides, but she's in love with someone else, and that's the twist that makes this story interesting. It's a short novel, well written, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“And here am I… what did I hope - what did I expect?”

Turgenev examines the nature of first love in this short text, which despite its length manages to saturate every emotion with incredible intensity.

We are told the story of the protagonist’s first experience of love. The protagonist Vladimir has been waiting with “expectancy and wonder” for his introduction to romance, and this anticipation is satisfied with the appearance of Zinaida. Turgenev hints at the superficiality of idealised first love, as Vladimir becomes infatuated with Zinaida almost like a child “enjoying a sweet”. He is swept up in the glamour of her presence and willingly succumbs to her games.

Implicated in the emotion of love is self-destruction. Within the text we see different forms of love, ranging from naive first love to illicit affairs. Yet with every type, we see how violence is integrated into the experience of love. Turgenev shows us what we are willing to expose ourselves to in our need to be desired and to feel loved.

I thought this was a beautifully crafted story that uncovers the hidden depths of human emotion.

More a whodunnit than a real love story in my opinion, although the loss of innocence is well portrayed - 2.5 stars

Zinaïda Aleksandrovna, the flirty girl next door, drives Vladimir who narrates this novella, lovesick.
She has an entourage of men of various ages and in the end this turns First Love into whodunnit. Vladimir as narrator strikes me as quite pure and young, and his feelings of head over heels love and longing are relatable. His admiration and slight obsession with her is well portrayed, albeit Call Me By Your Name in my view better captures the feverishness of being young and in love. Sometimes the book also made me think of The Sorrows of Young Werther, how all purpose to live just slips away from Vladimir when his interest is not returned sufficiently.
The atmosphere of Russia in the nineteenth century, with lots of French, even so much so that his mother doesn’t want to write a letter in Russian, fearing the grammar, was also well executed.
The ending is quite grim and felt to me rather rushed, the reveal at the end reminded me a bit of the style of Kazuo Ishiguro in terms of understated style.

Goede, ouderwetse passie, uit de tijd dat de Romantiek de Romantiek nog was, in een voorspelbaar plotje. Maar charmant.

Who hasn't had a first love in their life? We all in some way have experienced this in our life; so Turgenev cannot be any better, can he? First Love is then his story of that experience.

According to Wikipedia, Turgenev has been in love with a young woman, which lasted until he discovered that she was his father's mistress. This experience of his own life takes the shape of a story in First Love. Turgenev himself has admitted that this short novella is the most autobiographical work of his.

The beauty of this piece of work doesn't come from the story. It comes through all the emotions that are touchingly and truthfully described. The love the protagonist, Vladimir Petrovich feels for a young girl who is much older to him, the rapture, the loss, and the pain, and the effects of the shocking discovery all were vividly described that the reader feels all that he feels. I too lived through Vladimir's emotions, experiencing them with him all along. It was an emotional journey.

One word must also be said about Turgenev's writing. His is one of simplicity. It may not have the religious ardour or the philosophical wisdom of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, but sometimes simplicity itself is quite alluring.

Challenge: Try to fund a Russian classic where people are happy (level: impossible)
