I honestly am not sure what I think about this one. It's not that the world-building was necessarily bad, and I actually appreciate the way the book portrayed its messages. But it was still not nearly as enjoyable as the first one and one main reason I have for that is that this sequel is just a lot less character-driven. Lina and Doon no longer have personalities of their own and it feels like that they're just characters with eyes for us to look through, and it really feels like everything that is happening is just a plot going through the motions.

{Feburary 7th, 2015} MINI-REVIEW

3 stars.

I didn't enjoy this AS much as I'd hoped, but it was alright. Everything felt rather lacklustere to me. But hey, that's one heck of a beautiful cover! Idk what else to say without hitting spoilers. x:

Mäletad, kuulasin mõni aeg tagasi Jeanne DuPrau düstoopilist romaani "The City of Ember", kus inimesed elasid maa-aluses linnas ning ei teadnud, et on olemas ka maa-pealne. Nüüd kuulasin Scribdi äpis ära ka sarja teise ja neljanda osa, vastavalt "The People of Sparks" ja "The Diamond of Darkhold".

Mulle meeldis "The People of Sparks", sest huvitav oli lugeda, kuidas Emberi inimesed uue keskkonnaga kohanesid.

“But how could you?" said Lina. "When people have been mean to you, why would you want to be good to them?"
"You wouldn't want to," Maddy said. "That's what makes it hard. You do it anyway. Being good is hard. Much harder than being bad.”

As soon as my kids and I finished reading this book, we immediately contrasted it with the first in the series. Which one did we like more and why. I have to say for me, I enjoyed the second half of this book more than City of Ember. However, the first half really bored me. I wasn't sure if my kids would make it through, but they pushed on more than I would have. I'm certainly glad they did because of course, it turned around and became a wonderful story with a meaningful message. Tonight, we begin book 3.

Wonderful sequel to City of Ember and just as good. I love the gradual learning of the ways of the world, as the people of Ember had lived in darkness they had no experience of trees, sunburn, mountains and all manner of things. The tensions of the villagers when 400 people of Ember arrive are beautifully written. Lina and Doon are pivotal in the story continuing to be key to the future of their people. Such a great series.

The book was pretty good. There was more action in this book unlike the first on. Both groups were nice to each other in the beginning but they started to get mean to each other. I can't wait to read book 3

I really enjoyed the simplified concepts of war in this book. It discussed how war begins and how to stop it before it goes to far. Choosing good is hard and even harder when we are physically or emotionally hurt by someone else. It made me think about making the right choices in tough situations. It's nice that you learn small bits about the "disaster" but that is not the focus of the book. I liked the way Lina and Doon both carried on through this book. They went there separate ways and came back together at the end.

This series reminds me a lot of The Giver, both in subject matter and in structure. Both start with a highly acclaimed, well-known, wonderful book and are followed by a few somewhat odd, lesser-known books. It's not that the rest of the series is bad, it's just kind of... weird and not nearly as good in comparison.

I am reading the Ember series aloud to our 10- and 12-year-old kiddos this summer and we find ourselves looking forward to continuing the adventure every afternoon outside in the sunshine. It's cool to read these books outside in the city or the country or whatever you live and just imagine...the City of Ember and the People of Sparks...today we started the next one, of course, and will finish the fourth after that. I have NO IDEA where the author will lead us next, but I'm in!

The sequel does a good job to move forward. A conflict rises, and a cascade of events breaks apart the peace, all but swallowing everyone in its flames.
But human kindness and understanding fights to be heard. The path our protagonists travel has gone from a journey of discovery, to one of perseverance and unity

I'm beginning to think that Jeane DuPrau likes cliffhangers.
Although the first book was better this isnt behind by far. Both books were thrilling but tge first was well unique.

And btw re-discovering elextricity is one hell of a cliff hanger.
