Excellent! Just as good as The City of Ember and raises thought provoking questions and issues for young readers. My daughter has read these first two and is on book 3. In the current state of the world today where we face war and the idea of fighting with different groups of people, this series sets young readers to thinking about mature topics that affect the world they live in. On a fun note - an exciting read that kept me turning pages! Superb post-apocalyptic fiction for kids! LOVED IT

You know, it grew on me. It's still quite simplistic but it has a solid anti-war message made accessible for young readers. The book follows Lina and Doon and the townspeople as they struggle to survive by depending upon the town of Sparks. Characters are simple, themes are simple, but for young readers I think it sends a good message. I miss the creativity and uniqueness of the City of Ember, but this book still has an unsettling dystopian feel as you get glimpses of the devastation left behind from past travesties.

It’s funny how you never pick up on allegories as much when you’re an 11 year old but this was perfect and smart

A great follow up and moving ahead of the story. Can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I know it’s a children’s book, so the lessons are pretty easy to grasp, but they’re still good. I’ve read so many dystopian books before, but for some reason, this one hits a bit more. Maybe it’s because this is the first time I’m reading one as an adult, and the Disasters feel quite plausible in this day and age. And how the author describes things that are clearly from our present world (like the game Monopoly, bicycles, San Jose), so that I truly feel like I’m reading about this world in the future.

I was smiling so wide at the end when they lit up the light bulb with electricity; it was a truly beautiful moment to imagine.

I am really enjoying the City of Ember series. They are just fun, easy reads that have a great message to them. I highly recommend them.

I think this one definitely deserves a 3 star. Though I liked it, as most of you can see it took me like a month to complete. It was dragging on and on, but I loved the first one! This book is basically about how the people of Ember survive after the big move from underground. They go through some hardships and almost get kicked out of the sparks village during which Lina runs away to the city that she "dreamed"of, and comes back with news. Good and bad. Just because I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first doesn't mean you won't though. This book I would say 4th grade and up because of some images of people in pain after being burnt and of people in the wilderness. But other than that it is fine so let 4th and up read it. (If the images sound scary they aren't.)

As some of you know I am taking a break from goodreads for awhile so I will be writing reviews off and on but my groups will not see me with any activity. I wish you all the best during this season of our lives.

I enjoyed this, but it was a bit weird reading about the people of Ember living above ground after so long of only having watched the movie. This was an interesting book since it was about seeing people learning to provide for themselves, but it didn't have the spark (no pun intended) the first book had.

It's a fairly strong sequel, as far as sequels go. A bit more moralizing and less adventure-driven than the first book, which personally didn't interest me as much. Still, I feel like it's explains war and concepts surrounding it in a way that kids would understand, which I think has its merits.

The only thing I would criticize is that is does have a bit of a deus ex machina? Actually, I'm not sure you could even call it that, considering it wasn't so much that there was a sudden solution to a problem as much as a sudden decision that the problem wasn't there to begin with: one of the biggest sources of tension between Sparks and Ember was the fact that Sparks didn't have enough food to feed everyone. I thought this set up a really interesting conflict that could have implications to several current issues, and I was excited to see how it would play out, but in the end it was just like... Actually, we had food all along! You can all have some then I guess! And idk, I just feel like that could have been addressed better.

Other than that, I liked seeing the continuation of the story of the people of Ember, the conflicts felt believable, the worldbuilding was cool, side characters were pretty memorable, and there were a couple of tidbits that I really liked.
