This obviously hit close to home, as it revolved around Chile, in some ways my country (while reading, you‘ll find out there’s nothing like „my“ country). I‘d still recommend it to everyone who doesn’t know where they belong or if such a place even exists.

Ok, I'll be real: I didn't actually read the last two chapters. But I read the rest and it was really hard and there is no way that I am going to finish those chapters unless they are assigned, which they won't be. Reading in Spanish was really hard and time consuming, but I did it!

Anyways, I have to do homework now. Its boring. Sorry I cannot be more interesting rn.

I really liked this one as it reveals the woman behind the books she'd written. Much better than The Sum of Our Days, which read like some kind of melodrama at some point. This is more of a recollection than a memoir, and it was interesting to read about Allende's formative years and what influenced her fiction.

If you're a fan of her fiction books, this is the one nonfiction of hers that I'd recommend.

I rarely read memoirs but I decided to to read this one because of the author, and most importantly, because she writes of my native Chile. I felt like I was taking the journey with Allende and the anecdotes of typical Chileans made me homesick. I'm not sure if other readers would appreciate the book as much as another Chilean but Allende shares so much more than a memory of country of long ago. She shares her joys, challenges, and sorrow, in which all of us can, in some way, relate.

boring, full of stupidities...(like asking what is the second world, if so many countries are in the first or third world...well, how about grabbing a encyclopedia to find out instead)
I was in Chile when I was reading the book and couldn't bear to hear all those things that didn't apply to Chile anymore, but she still told them, even though they were ages old...
I really like other books by her (La casa de los espiritus or Paula) but this was really unbearable...

I enjoyed this, and it includes many memorable quotations, a few of which I added to my blog. I liked it enough that I immediately checked out of the library a few books she notes in this one, including an earlier memoir, Paula.

This book was on the recommended reading list for our upcoming trip to Chile. About 2/3 in the author notes, "Well, I've gone way off on a tangent, and I need to pick up the main thread of this account, if there is any thread in all this meandering." This sentence describes the book completely and I found it tiresome. The last sentence of the paragraph..."I've tried to arrange my thoughts according to themes or periods of my life, but it's seemed artificial to me because memory twists in and out, like an endless Moebius strip." True. And that sentence is artfully written. In my opinion, the book as a whole was not.
