Si uno hablaba el español como su primer lengua y leyó este libro, probablemente creerían que este libro era muy simple. Tendrían la razón. Sin embargo, como alguien que nunca a terminado una novela escrita en español en su vida entera, leyendo este libro fue un logro muy importante para mi. El nivel de lectura era perfecto para mi, y me gusto mucho el mundo de los indigenes de la amazona. También me encanta una historia sobre la amistad de un chica y chico que no se termina en el amor romántico. En mi opinión, no hay suficiente historias sobre la amistad entre diferente géneros.

Le doy 4/5 estrellas porque aunque algunas veces iba bien lento, me ha ayudado muchísimo con el desarrollo de mi español.

I saw this book lurking in my bookshelf the other day and a sense of nostalgia swept over me as I remembered how this might have been one of the first Young Adult books I've ever read, all the way back when I wasn't even one myself. I picked this up again, wondering how well I remembered things and how I perceived them now.



In this Amazonian adventure, fifteen year old Alexander Cold is sent out to his grandmother Kate, as his mother is struggling with cancer at home, too weak to look after him. Kate is a fearless reporter about to embark on an International Geographic expedition to the dangerous, remote world of the Amazon rainforest, on which Alexander now has to join her. The mission to document the legendary beast of the Amazon turns out to be a hard one, with many hidden secrets and dangers lurking, as Alex and his new friend Nadia soon discover.

The fact that this has been describes as an ecological romance makes me cringe, as this is definitely neither a flattering nor an accurate way to describe this. In fact, part of why I enjoyed reading this was because it wasn't a romance story - it's an adventure.



Isabel Allende created some wonderful characters here - the participants of the expedition all got their unique character traits, they're dynamic feels real and believable and I particularly liked how tough the females in this story were. They're definitely victims to men who think themselves as authoritarian, but at the same time they're in no way afraid to stand their ground. Our main characters are young adults - we've got the 15 year old Alexander and the 13 year old Nadia and both of them felt believable as well. They're hitting puberty, where you might feel in charge and in control of everything, but at the same time you're clearly not. Still, they're never annoying, but ultimately good-natured and brave kids.

In terms of themes, they were a lot of messages conveyed that I certainly didn't pick up on as a kid. Allende explores the contrast between our civilisation and nature as well as the exploitation of native cultures and does both in a elegantly subtle way. I feel like elegant is a good word to describe her writing in general, it's vivid, gentle and descriptive and I could so clearly visualise everything that was happening.

In general, I am absolutely aware that age-wise this book is not targeted at me, which makes me put it in a different context and influences my expectations, but it's still an enjoyable tale!

4 Sterne (= sehr gut)

Ein wirklich guter Auftakt zu einer Jugend-Fantasy-Trilogie, die in vielen Aspekten von so einigen Jugend-Fantasy-Geschichten aus den aktuellen Jahren abweicht.

- Toll, dass Alexander und Nadia sich als jugendliche Protagonisten auch tatsächlich *jung* anfühlen (keine Pseudojugendlichen, die sich stattdessen die ganze Zeit mit Erwachsenenthemen, meistens Sex, rumschlagen)
- Brutal ist die Geschichte trotzdem. Hier wird nichts geschönt, weder was menschliche Abgründe und Vorurteile angeht, noch was die Naturgewalt des Amazonas-Urwalds betrifft. Allerdings wird diese Brutalität nicht in Details ausgebreitet. Man muss sich damit abfinden, dass manche dieser Szenen sich dann ein bisschen wie im Schnelldurchlauf anfühlen.
- Die Magie beruht auf Mythen von indianischen Urvölkern des Amazonas-Gebiets. Diese Art von Magie sieht man sonst selten in Fantasy, die Geschichte wird dadurch umso einzigartiger. Allende geht allerdings schön respektvoll vor. Anhand von Nadia und Alexander wird gezeigt, wie wertvoll und stark diese Mythenwelt machen kann; und niemand muss missioniert werden.
- Ein bisschen halten mich die Figuren auf Abstand (z.B. stereotypische Bösewichte), da gibt's einen Stern Abzug von mir.

Vollste Empfehlung, mein Re-Read hat sich gelohnt. Ich werde gerne in der Reihe weiterlesen!

i would have been obsessed with this book if i read it like 8 years ago

An action filled Amazon adventure. Very well crafted and woven. Each character is made to feel real and believable in their reactions.

Not unexpected from such an author.

Me gustaría poder decir que me encantó, pero no es así. La historia empieza muy bella y muy al estilo de Isabel Allende, la historia me empezaba a envolver, cuando de pronto tomó un matiz demasiado increíble.
La historia trata sobre un adolescente (Alexander Coid) que tiene a su madre enferma y su familia se está desmoronando, él es enviado con su abuela a un viaje de expedición al Amazonas para investigar las apariciones de una rara criatura a la cual llaman "la Bestia", que ha estado matando a varios foráneos, esto es en una zona casi inaccesible, en medio de la espesura de la selva Amazónica. Hasta aquí todo está bien, interesante y bastante atractivo.
En este viaje, Alexander conoce a su amiga Nadia Santos, una niña que ha vivido siempre entre indígenas y en medio de la selva, ellos dos emprenden una aventura que cuenta la magia que existe en aquel lugar. Aquí es donde empezó a desentonarme un poco el libro, las cosas empiezan a ponerse demasiado "mágicas", y que, para mi gusto, no iban con la trama original.
No sé, es sólo mi punto de vista, la forma en que está narrado es espectacular, como sólo ella sabe hacerlo, pero la trama esta vez no logró enredarme al 100.
Eso no quiere decir que no me gustó por completo, también tiene muchas cosas entrelíneas, nos está relatando de como un niño va madurando de la forma más difícil, que es como la vida nos ha enseñado a todos, sólo que él lo hace en medio de un lugar mágico y de formas poco convencionales.

There is nothing better than a sassy grandmother, and this book certainly provides such a character. Kate's sarcasm alone is enough to make this book a real treat, but there are so many other things to enjoy as well (even for adults who generally avoid stories written for younger audiences). There's the social commentary, the lush and terrifying descriptions of the rainforest, the fun and uncanny mystery, the propulsive plot, the way Isabel Allende plays with fluid notions of self and personal identity as her characters journey deeper into the wilderness, and the narrative's blurry boundaries between humans, beasts, and their environments. Telling the story of a Conradian quest through the Amazon to find a mysterious creature, The City of the Beasts is an epic and promising start to a young adult trilogy, great for fans of nature, geography, monsters, and mysticism.

Trigger warnings: parent with cancer, death, violence, some really weird and icky treatment of indigenous populations.

This was aggressively meh. I've enjoyed Isabel Allende's books in the past, so I figured it was worth trying one of her YA books. And while this started pretty solidly, this rapidly became dull. The whole thing just sort of became very action-centric with no depth at all to the characters.

And when there turned out to be a subplot in which there was a plan to kill of an entire indigenous community with fake vaccinations, I was basically on the No Thank You train.

I thoroughly enjoyed Allende's mix of magical fantasy and realism which makes you believe you're in another world. Beautiful writing. Although it is completely different, any Harry Potter fan would love this. This book began as bedtime stories told to her own children and grandchildren who persuaded her to put it on paper.

Esta história é completamente diferente das narrativas que Isabelle Allende nos habituou. Não se trata de uma saga familiar. Mas de uma triologia de aventuras.

É a expedição de Alexander e sua avó no Amazonas, juntamente com um arqueólogo, um médico, o guia e a sua filha Nádia. A amizade que forma-se entre Alexander e Nádia faz com que se crie uma energia mística. Em que os dois possuem espíritos de animais o jaguar e a águia.

A missão é destruir a Besta, um homem monstruoso que vive na selva. Contarão com a ajuda do Povo Oculto.


Gostei muito deste começo. Adorei os protagonistas. E deliciei-me principalmente com as descrições sobre os animais, os índios e toda a cultura indígena

Con “La ciudad de las bestias” Allende comienza la trilogía “Las Memorias del Águila y el Jaguar” y su incursión en la literatura juvenil, bastante alejada de las novelas a las que estábamos habituados: su protesta sobre la dictadura que azotó por muchos años a Chile.
Al principio no sabía qué esperar, sin embargo, me encontré con una historia de aventuras muy bonita, rodeada de fantasía, personajes increíbles y una lección sobre la destrucción de ecosistemas, en donde nos obsequia valores familiares y una verdadera amistad.

“La ciudad de las bestias” se basa en las aventuras que viven dos jóvenes adolescentes en la selva amazónica: Alexander llevado por su abuela, desde Nueva York, a una misión expedicionaria, y Nadia, una chica mitad estadounidense mitad nativa del Amazonas, muy inteligente y amable; que se convierte en su amiga.

Está narrada en tercera persona siguiendo un argumento lineal y bastante descriptivo (usual en la autora), pero sin resultar aburrido. Está poblado de animales, indígenas, chamanes, dioses y espíritus, en donde se entretejen a la perfección la magia, la fantasía y la realidad.

Quizás su final fue un poco precipitado, pero ha sido una historia genial que se lee de forma sencilla, devorando cada palabra y cada frase; plagada de un mundo fantasioso y de personajes curiosos.

100% recomendado.

عرفت اسم الرواية من خلال موقف ساخر في فيلم السفارة في العمارة للفنان عادل إمام. وكان الموقف يدور في بيت أسرة من الشيوعيين الذين يحاربون ويكافحون لأجل المساواة بين الأغنياء والفقراء.
سأل عادل إمام شاب مشغول بكتاب في يده: ماذا تقرأ؟ فأجابه بطريقة كوميدية تناسب الفيلم: "مدينة البهائم".
كنت أظن أن مدينة البهائم كتابا، ولم أكن أعرف أنها رواية، و ظننت أن الكتاب بالتأكيد يدور عن الفقراء والأغنياء وصراعاتهم الطبقية، وخمنت أن مدينة البهائم هذه هي مدينة الأغنياء، وخمنت أكثر و توقعت أنها قد تكون مثل رواية مزرعة الحيوانات ل"جورج أرويل".
قرأت الرواية متوقعا أن أقرأ ما خمنته أو أفضل منه قليلا، ولكن يا للعجب!!!! لقد قرأت واحدة من أروع ما قرأت في حياتي من الروايات _ وأنا مقل في قراءة الروايات ونادرا ما تعجبني واحدة .
الرواية كلما خطوت في صفحاتها بعض الخطوات أجدني غير قادر علي العودة، و أجدني أزداد شوقا للإستمرار في المتابعة!!! لم يكن التشويق وحده هو العامل المسئول عن هذه الحالة التي انتابتني تجاه الرواية، بل إن موضوعها المدهش و أسلوب المؤلفه و فلسفتها كانت أسباب متضافرة علي ابقائي حبيس صفحاتها والتي زادت عن مائتي وسبعين صفحة.
تبدأ الرواية في بيت بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، الأم اكتشف الجميع فجأة أنها مصابة بالسرطان و أنها ستحجز في مصحة للعلاج وأن الجميع سيتفرقون، وكان من نصيب بطل هذه الرواية (الكسندر / الكس) أن يذهب كي يعيش مع جدته الصارمة غريبة الأطوار، فيسافر إليها وحيدا ويعاني للوصول إليها، وعند الوصول يعرف منها أنها ذاهبة في رحلة استكشافية إلي غابات الأمازون كي تكتب تقريرا لصالح مجلة "ناشيونال جيوغرافيك" المشهورة في العالم كله، وكانت ترافق بعثة من العلماء تحت الحراسة.
قامت "ناشيونال جيوغرافيك"بتمويل الرحلة لبحث عن قبيلة مجهولة في الأمازون تسكن مدينة أسطورية، وتسكن قريبا منها حيوان خرافي شاعت عنه الأخبار وعرف بين المستكشفين باسم "البهيمة"، ومنه أخذت الرواية اسمها.
يسافر اليكس مع جدته إلي غابات الأمازون وتبدأ الكاتبة وبعبقرية فذة في تصوير الحياة البكر في الغابات فتقرأ وكأنك تشاهد الغابات بنفسك، حتي أنك تقرأ الصفحات وعندما تتوقف تشعر وكأنك قد عدت من سفر حقيقي.
للكاتبة نفس روح "باولو كويلهو" _ وهي لاتينية مثله _ في روايته الشهيرة "الخيميائي"، فكلاهما _ الروايتان _ تتضمنان رحلة سفر طويلة للبحث عن شيء، الأولي في الصحاري، والأخري في الغابات.
تعرض اليكس ورفيقة تعرف إليها للاختطاف من قبل أبناء الضباب (قبيلة مجهولة في الأمازون) وينتقل للعيش معهم مدة يتعرف فيها علي أسرار الحياة الحقيقة التي خلق لها الإنسان، حياة تخلو من تعقيدات العالم المتقدم، حياة تخلو من أمراض العصر الحديث الأخلاقية والنفسية والبدنية.
في هذه الرحلة ينشغل أليكسندر بالبحث عن ذاته و عن علاج لمرض أمه الذي وجده فعلا في الغابات .. لدي قبائل الأمازون البدائيين.
تعرضت الرواية لبعض الوقائع التي حدثت في إبادة الهنود نتيجة الفساد، حيث يغزو غاباتهم المغامرون ورجالالأعمال والباحثين عن ثروات الأمازون، وقد أبيدت قبائل بأكملها بسبب جشع كل هؤلاء.
من شخصيات الرواية رجل الأعمال الاستغلالي الذي قرر أن يتفق مع الطبيبة المسئولة عن تحصين الهنود الحمر ضد الأمراض علي أن يبدل التطعيمات الواقية بفيروسات مسببة للمرض، وينكشف الأمر وينكشف ما هو أدهي .. فقد حدث من نفس الطبيبة هذا الأمر أكثر من مرة وأبيدت فيها قبائل بالمئات ظل موتهم لغزا أمام الحكومة.
الرواية تعرضت لمعتقدات البدائيين وحياتهم بعظيم الاحترام، لولا نقصي و عدم قدرتي الجيدة علي التعبير لكتبت فيها شعرا، ولو كنت اقدر أن اكتب خيرا مما كتبت لفعلت. لكن يكفي من سيقرأها أن يكون عالما بأنه لن يضيع وقته في قراءة شيء غير مفيد.
