I read this at the same time I am reading The Making of Return of the Jedi. They have different goals, but it is hard not to compare them while reading both at the same time. Unfortunately for this book, it really suffered in comparison. The Star Wars book would meticulously work through iterations of ideas and the method of how they would be realized on screen. This book mostly showed sketches and sometimes would say something like, "and the lighting would be adjusted in Photoshop." A lot of the stuff had kind of throw-away lines about Photoshop.
One of the most fascinating/disappointing aspects of the book was the portion where they actually discussed some of the non-Photoshop work they did. The best was how they would take pictures all over New Zealand and take pieces they liked to create backgrounds for scenes in the movie. One that I remember is when Gandalf is riding towards Isengard. That foreground was real, but all of the background beyond the trees was made up of about 8 different images from all over New Zealand. That's awesome. It would've been far better if they had shown us those 8 images in their original form, which portions of those images they cut out, and then the final image from the movie. That is the kind of work I expected from this book. It is still interesting reading the very short description of what they did, but actually seeing the different images would've been 10x better.
Some of the descriptions were nice and offered glimpses of how the process worked and what they considered when coming up with the ideas, but most were very superficial.
I would recommend this book to LOTR fans and I would say check it out from the library if you can. The artwork is nice, but the asking price of $35 is pretty steep for what you are getting. Comparing again the the Star Wars book, that asking price was $85, but it felt more than justified because it is an exhaustive tome with incredible in depth details of pretty much every step of the process. This book felt more like a collection of cool sketches.
In this book, you see a character called Frodo Baggins. They are celebrating a party because of something that happened in the hobbit. But after they had a quest, to destroy the ring in a volcano to make sure it is gone for good. So they set off going high and low to travel to the volcano to destroy the ring in the volcano. Once they do make it, one of the charecters betray the others making them spit up and loose contact with each other. Then it ends on two characters walking into the Shadow Woods.

Penasaran hingga terus berlanjut.
When the Lord of the Rings movies came out in the early 2000’s, I was absolutely obsessed. As I also was with the books (my review in https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...). The movies were a masterpiece, and I found a superior talent in their aesthetic options, choices of atmosphere and looks. The video “making off” is eye-opening in all ways they went out of their way to achieve a certain result, and these books are in the same line. Since the conceptual design of the most tiny detail, to the epic effects, all contributed to the end result and sometimes the subtlest of aspects changes the way we perceive the action. I bought all the illustrated big format books about the making of the movies and was immersed in all of them for quite some time. They will always be 5 stars.
Túto knihu som si kúpila za poukážku,ktorú som dostala posledný deň v škole. Od knihy som asi očakávala veľa a preto som zostala sklamaná. Kniha ma veľmi nebavila a čítala som ju na mňa veľmi dlho. Asi polovicu vecí by som z tej knihy poprečiarkala, lebo to tam bolo úplne zbytočné. Neviem či si prečítam aj zvyšné diely z tejto série. Uvidím. Ale v najbližšej dobe to neplánujem.
