Gives options for brother/sister names that are in the same style as the name you're looking at. Much more comprehensive and realistic lists of names in different styles.
Great book - love the advice columns at the front and the lists of names by style in the back. The middle is an awesome grouping of how trendy a name is with sibling sets and great things to think about like the name in popular culture or how people will likely react to it.
I also love Wattenberg's website, and the book did not disappoint. Would highly recommend.
This is by far the best baby name book that my husband and I came across. It has name popularity charts, name meanings, and lists of names by category (such as Southern names, Whimsical names, etc.). It helped us pick out our daughter's name just by randomly flipping through it.
this was my favorite baby naming book. it included graphs to show the names popularity. after searching and searching for not one but TWO good girls names, we chose adrienne and victoria. both have 8 letters. both have four consonants and four vowels. the capital A and capital V mirror one another when placed tip to tip ><. they follow the syllable rule of order for the family ) Jack (1), Leslie (2), Adrienne (3), Victoria (4). I didn't plan that part, but it is cool.
I loved using this book while my husband and I chose names for our babies. I also loaned this book out to numerous friends and they have all loved it too, in fact, some have asked to borrow it more than once:)
My sister suggested this book to me as she knows how hard we are struggling trying to come up with a name for our babe. Written in 2005 the context is slightly dated as far as up to date popular names but the book is chuck full of good info. I appreciated the author’s blatant perspective on naming your child. Her point that there are 6 or so billion people in the world means that somewhere another human will have the same name as your child, no matter how unique you think you are, so get over it. Also, people can’t “steal” a name from you. Naming your child is on a first come first serve and if you still like the name, then use it! I think her best advice is to name your child something you wouldn’t mind being named yourself. I also really like the “snapshot” of each name which gave the ranking and year the name has been most popular. She also gives sibling suggestions (based on statistics, not her opinion) so you can see what other sister and brother names go along with the name you are thinking of using. Some of those were a real eye opener. Alas, after reading this book I hate to admit my husband and I are no closer to choosing a name. Mostly because as fast as I add to my list, my husband feels he has some special veto power and seems to cross all my favorites off. I guess I’ll just keep hoping to receive inspiration from a dream or something
The Baby Name Wizard is a really great name book that I will be recommending to all my pregnant friends and family members. It's really the only book you need considering there are free apps on the iphone that you can use too.
This book was well organized by both the traditional abc order and then further seperated into name origins. I have an Irish last name, so I found it helpful to find a complete list of Irish first names. I also enjoyed the sibling name ideas she gave for each name.
I must admit, after reading this book I still haven't decided on the "perfect" name for my son, but this helped me get a lot closer. I have a feeling I will be bringing this book to the hospital with me to help me make a final decision when the baby is born!
The best baby name book ever! It doesn't give the name's meaning but it tells you what level of popularity it is, the style it is considered and suggestions for other names that fit your style and taste. Such fun and useful, too!
We're back to this book! If only this little guy would tell us his name...
Well, I'm not "done" reading it, because we haven't settled on a name, but I'll write a review anyway. This is such a great book of baby names, because this clever lady has clumped together types of names. So if you like the name Penelope, she gives you several boy and girl names that go with that same style. I'm really impressed with how accurate it's been in predicting my own tastes. Highly recommended for expecting parents.
By far the best baby name book I have encountered yet. Each name has a description, suggested sibling names and a list of references people will likely make to that name. In addition to the alphabetical and detailed description, there are great lists by name styles that contain some unique options I have not seen anywhere else. Nice intro chapters on how name preferences evolve, maps with regional favorites and advice on what to do if the parents don't agree.
This book is incredibly addictive--I've been looking at it off and on since learning we were expecting a baby. The author divides the names into "families" like classic names, western names, bell-tone names, etc., and suggests other names you might like (if you like x, check out y,z, etc.). It also gives the name's ranking in terms of popularity so you can find out just how many other Michaels will be in your son's class. I'm a big fan.
Rather than just listing thousands of names that start with each letter of the alphabet, this book actually categorizes them. I loved how I could look up a name I liked, and it would suggest other names I might also like. And they really were other names I liked. Sibling suggestions and potential nicknames were nice to see also.
