This was a fun read... Not the most complete list of names, but it has plenty of additional names beyond the basic entry list, sorted into categories such as "Porch-Sitters" and "Shakespearean". In the alphabetical list of entries, I especially like the suggestions for appropriately coordinating brother/sister names.

Another good resource. Yes, this is the third baby naming book I've read. Got a long list and still no clear winner. Maybe he'll just have to be No Name Jenson. Do they have a hospital in No Name, Colorado? You've seen the stop along the freeway on the way to Utah. That should be where they banish would-be parents who can't think of names for their children.

I'm not really in the market for a baby right now, but this book is just fun to flip around in. Beside each name there is a graph that shows its popularity over the course of the twentieth century. Also cool is name classification according to style ('Antique Charm', 'Biblical', 'New Classics', 'Surfer Sixties', etc.)
Maybe my favorite name ever? Tarquin. I am hoping this will be the 'Leonardo' of this century, because I just bet a lot of money on it.
Anyways, the website is pretty rad too.

Oh, boy, are we in trouble. Choosing a baby name is not easy! But I do really like this book. I think it will be helpful as we get closer. I especially like the brother and sister names suggestions that gives you ideas of similar names. And I like the groupings in the second half of the book.

Really well laid out, lots of name ideas. We did get our baby's name from this book, lol.

By far the most useful baby name book - it's too bad we got it so late. It would have saved us some frustration in looking at those other books (50,000 baby names, 60,000 baby names, etc), which just have lists of names with very brief and often inane explanations of meaning. This book, based on the website of the same name, offers very useful lists of names that are similar in style, and also offers much better descriptions of names. Also, it sticks to actual names, rather than just including words that some idiot may have once used as a name...like Seven from one of the other books - really? Seven?

If you're stuck, look for this. It helped us finally settle on Max last week, if we have a boy.

This was my favorite baby name book. I examined it from cover to cover while I was pregnant with each of my girls. It focuses on the "feel" of a name rather than the meaning. The meaning of a name is easily found on one of several baby name websites, but this book is unique in the way that it tracks different naming trends and the pop-culture meaning of names.
I just loaned it to my mom to help her choose a dog name for the puppy that she is getting next month.

A fresh take on baby names with some interesting lists of names and good things to consider. I found this helpful for coming up with names I like when I was struggling to find any using other resources.

Got this for my sister, and myself, as everyone says how great it is. It is a lot of fun! She doesn't list every name out there in the universe, which is refreshing, actually, but gives fun (and short) insights, meanings and current popularity status to more than 1500 names. Wish I'd had it before my girls were born (not that we would have chosen different names, though). Whenever Jess calls with an update on their naming struggles, I flip to the name they are discussing and see what it has to say. Also, Swistle talks about it All The Time.

As great as its predecessor (the second edition), but with new and updated information. I like some of the new tools/graphics as well, like the map showing naming trends (it only talks about the USA here, but it's still interesting). Overall, this is the best baby naming book series I've come across! I love how it lists common sister/brother names along with each entry, shows a popularity graph over the past century+, and gives each name a 'style,' so you can see what you like and refer to the section on that style later in the book. Very helpful!!

I love this book because we had a hard time picking a name for my second son. This book was neat because we could look up my first son's name and it gave us a list of names that went with his.

I also looked at the US Census homepage to search popular names.

I'm obsessed with names, and therefore baby name books. This is the best one I've seen, by far. It's such a unique, effective approach to considering names. So many books just tell you the meaning, but this book actually dives into the popularity and practicality of each name.
