This is the latest entry in my quest to listen to every audiobook that Sir Derek Jacobi has recorded. I find his voice mesmerizing, and would give 3 stars just for that. But as a stand alone work, The Time Machine is both interesting and thought-provoking. What will humanity look like in our future? How do political and economic trends alter what that path will be? I don't think the time-traveler in this story has all of those answers, but he is a vivid storyteller that draws you into the world of the Eloi and the Morlocks as if you were there. You feel terror, you're compelled by curiosity, you want to keep going to see what will happen next. In a nutshell, its an oldie but a goodie.

A Victorian-era scientist calls together a group of men and tells them of his recent adventure, a trip through time...

I had intended to participate in a reading of this with the Distinguished Society of Pantless Readers but once I had a taste, I wolfed the whole tale down in one sitting.

The Time Machine is probably the first time travel story and definitely a spiritual ancestor of every time travel story since. The nameless time traveler whips up a time machine and travels through time. What could be simpler?

The Traveler goes to the year 802,000 and encounters the descendants of man, the Eloi and the Morlocks. Wells uses the Eloi and the Morlocks to illustrate the class differences in his own time but the Traveler's speculation on the haves and have-nots sounded very familiar, a nice bit of timeless social satire. After some misadventures, he returns home and no one believes him. To show those assholes, he goes on another jaunt and was never head from again. At least at the time of the Time Machine's publication.

The Time Machine broke a lot of new ground. It was probably the first time travel story and it could be argued that it was both the first dystopian sf story and the first Dying Earth tale. It's also not much of a stretch to call it an ancestor of the planetary romance genre as well. There's not a lot separating The Traveler from John Carter of Mars, if you think about it.

While there's a lot of fun timey-wimey stuff going on, Wells' prose isn't easy to digest. Part of it is the writing style of the time and another part is that science fiction was still in diapers at the time this was written.

Wells' depiction of future Earth was a very memorable one, one that influenced countless authors that came after. Adjusting for the time period, The Time Machine is a fun yet somewhat difficult read. Four out of five Sonic Screwdrivers.

"Humanity had been strong, energetic, and intelligent, and had used all its abundant vitality to alter the conditions which it lived. And now came the reaction of the altered conditions."

Read with the non-crunchy classics group, but took forever to finally review.

The Time Machine is one of those timeless classics (I was going to do a better pun than this but my creativity stalled, so we'll stop there) that everyone should try on for size.

A well-written, entrancing book that's saved by it's second half because the first part is a little too technical, too subjective to hold more than momentary interest. When the travels are finally revealed, the story finally becomes interesting.

He goes into the future assuming man will have progressed to momentous wonders, but instead finds that once certain plateaus are reached, man can't help but fragment. I'm sure the same could be said for today - people 100 years ago probably spent time marveling at how much we'd accomplish in 2016, but if you turn on the news it's filled with stories about people walking off the cliff playing Pokemon Go on their phone!

It's telling that the ponderings H.G. Wells had back then on social class still exist as problems today.

The visions were trippy and advanced for their time. Imaginative separation of what appears to be the superior race on top, the inferior below, but the narrator finds not all is at it seems in the end. This surprise added layered dimensions that wouldn't be there otherwise.

Really, the best thing about the book is the ending. Not because the rest of it isn't good, but because the ending is THAT good, thought-provoking because of the narrator's speech to his listening audience after his return travel, where he ponders what he could or could not find when he went into the past. When we know he's gone again, we're not sure what's happened - the possibilities are endless. Did he find a place in time he was happier at, not wishing to return? Did he lose the time machine or was it destroyed? Did he get destroyed himself by error or intention?

Unfortunately the Victorian prosed writing isn't always enjoyable during the technical musings, and the characters were invented more as a social commentary of the class separation than to be fully fleshed, but it's still a wonder of a story that has spawned countless children throughout the years. It definitely deserves to live on in its classic category, celebrated for the creative experiment it was.

Brutti, sporchi e cattivi

There you go. This minor SF classic read !!! I am learning more and more to tame this genre, and I tell myself that knowing the basics is quite good. Hence, I found my interest in this book in a flea market. What a journey! A book that reads well and on its own. And what I especially liked was Wells' clever writing. He doesn't take his readers down and makes concepts very accessible, which could put them off. I take as an example the introduction when it includes the idea of the 4th dimension. Even if I found the trip a bit long towards the end, I still appreciated this detour in time. It is a text to read, I think, for all amateurs. And those who want to dive into the world of SF.

Some authors can see further into the future than the others… H.G. Wells could see even further than those that could see far…
As a result his gloomily satirical The Time Machine is a work of a prophet.
Nature never appeals to intelligence until habit and instinct are useless. There is no intelligence where there is no change and no need of change. Only those animals partake of intelligence that have a huge variety of needs and dangers.

The future is now…
Morlocks produce commodities… Eloi produce pop culture… Morlocks consume pop culture… Eloi consume commodities…
Politicians consume both Morlocks and Eloi…

Still thrills to this day! Yes, it's dated and compared to other sci-fi it will look like child's play, but there's a genuinely creepy moment or two within The Time Machine. And by now, reading this is sort of like reading a sci-fi history book!

A Victorian-era scientist reveals that he has created a time machine and goes on to relate his harrowing adventures into the future, where he meets a race apparently so advanced they've stop doing anything, as well as a monster race of subterranean dwellers with a peculiar connection to the others.

Eloi and Morlock, together imperfect harmony...

Wells created a cautionary tale for an ever-evolving scientific world. Yes, even in the Victorian area it was apparent which way the human race was headed. It's that easy living life-style that we've strived for since the earliest invention. It can be taken too far, says Wells. Granted, he doesn't think that will happen for another 800,000 years, so until then I say, smoke 'em if ya got 'em!

If there was one single reason to read this it would be that H.G Wells was a favoured author and an inspiration to the Legendary writer Ray Bradbury. Pictured below in a time machine movie prop.

Alas this is a fine work from a writer of bygone times and if he could only discover his vision and writings of Time Travel were in fact prophecies and became true. As I have indeed traveled to 802,701AD and meet the lovely Weena a female Eloi and the dreadful Morlocks. The Time Machine he speaks of was made in the year 2222 but something even greater is in my possession much smaller and highly efficient the 'iFuture' watch is now the tool of Time travel it will revolutionize the whole time travel experience I have just finished the prototype and tested it. Infact I only wish Wells could tell of the year of 2666 the year of the undead, Zombies tread upon the earth society in mayhem and only few survivors to walk upon the land. I had indeed a purpose there and brought in time with me the virus to end the undead pandemic. Time Travel is indeed mans greatest invention and in the wrong hands mans worst nightmare and in the right hands a shining light of glory from darkness.
This story is a grand work written in wonderful prose that has a deep thought provoking effectiveness on the reader. The vision of the future is indeed frightening especially his account of the end of life on earth. H G Wells is a writer of high intelligence, a grand thinker.

Time Travel is an entertaining genre to write about, the success of the 11.22.63 by Stephen King and movies like Back to the Future, The Time Machine and Planet of The Apes prove that.

To the future and beyond.

A group of people is greatly preoccupied by the absence of one of their friends. And serious concerns arise over his pitiful state when he finally returns to his home, raddled and haggard. The Time Traveler has been in the year 802,701 AD, and he has quite a story to tell.

This was good! Great even, maybe. Tbh I’m not fan of HG Wells style of writing, but can’t understate the importance of this writing, being one of the first ever recorded works of time travel and all. I absolutely LOVE almost everything regarding time travel, but unfortunately I couldn’t love this one, possibly because of having watched the movies first. I did enjoy and appreciate finally getting to know in great detail the original work, the Time Traveler, Weena, the Eloi, the Morlocks, and the whole story around it. Also pleasantly surprised to learn about the travel to the ending of times, and the Epilogue, which I did not know about.  Did not enjoy the ideology/sociological explanations for the evolution/devolution of mankind, which I found theoretically and mind-numbingly boring, as much as the “Book of Goldestein” from 1984; personally I’d preferred to have left all that a mystery, but that’s me.

I’m positive if I hadn’t watched the movies ages ago I’d have enjoyed this so much more, but alas, even after all this time my memories still remain very much fresh. So the unavoidable predictability, plus the total absence of surprise (which means everything to me), greatly hampered my enjoyment of this book. The Time Machine (2002) is also one of my fav movies of all time, so it was very hard to compete against that too.

All in all, this felt mostly 3-stars, but if hadn’t watched it first I bet it would’ve been 4, maybe even 5. So I’m settling with 4. And still very much looking forward to reading the “War of the Worlds”, which I have also already watched. Dang.

*** The Time Machine (1960): By far the most accurate depiction I’ve watched so far. Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux play a decent Time Traveler and Weena, respectively. The movie was interesting enough, yet sadly left much to be desired. I just can’t deny the feeling that the movie felt kinda clunky and effects felt wildly dated by today’s standards, but you gotta love the movie funny version of the Morlocks lol. (5/10)

*** The Time Machine (2002): The most unfaithful and inaccurate depiction I’ve ever watched and by FAR the most entertaining and my most favorite one lol. Just LOVED everything about it! Guy Pearce, Samantha Mumba, Sienna Guillory and Jeremy Irons fantastic in their roles. LOVED the tragic backstory with Emma, the introduction of Mara instead of Weena, the utterly scary Morlocks and their Overlord. Completely LOVED the scenography, soundtrack and special effects, which totally blew my mind and is a perfect representation of how I picture and fantasize every day about time travel in my mind. Of course the movie has been widely panned and in all honesty deviates so much from the original work it hardly resembles it anymore. Don’t care. LOVED IT. (10/10)

No me importa. AME TODO. (10/10)
