Hi-la-rious! The three witches have always been my favorite. Right after Death, of course.

Executive Summary: I struggled a bit with this one. I liked it more than the Rincewind books, but it's probably my least favorite of the Witch books so far.

I own a lot of the Discworld books and I've enjoyed some of them quite a lot, while others I find to be just OK. The Witch books thus far have been better than most, although I'd probably rank them behind both the City Guard series (although I've only read 1 of those) and the Death series.

I started this on a plane last month returning from PAX and kind of got bored and switched to watching Netflix instead. There were parts I enjoyed, but often I'd find my attention drifting when reading it and I was never really itching to pick it back up.

Like all discworld books it has some great jokes, and I love the cameos by Death. However my favorite witch book continues to be Equal Rites, which as I understand it is the one least like the others. Maybe once Tiffany Aching shows up I'll like them a bit more.

There are still a ton more discworld books for me to read and I hear Small Gods is one of the best. So far I haven't had great luck with the stand alones though, and this is one of the few I don't own because I hasn't been on sale yet. I'll probably pick it up later this year, but for now I have other things I'd rather read instead.

En este libro están completamente en su salsa y mostrando cada una sus particularidades y personalidades de una forma que me ha hecho disfrutar más que nunca con ellas. Es una parodia continua de los cuentos de hadas clásicos (incluido El Mago de Oz), con una mezcla de vudú y, por supuesto, muy mala leche, situaciones alocadas y conversaciones descabelladas. Me he reído un montón y además es un libro cortito, ágil y que se lee prácticamente solo.

This is the third book in the Witches subseries of Discworld. The last time I enjoyed a Discworld book this much was when I read the second Witches book, Wyrd Sisters. I’m not sure if I’m far enough into Discworld to proclaim my favorite subseries yet, but Witches is the top contender.

As with the previous Witches book, this story focuses primarily on the characters of Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat. Through a series of events, the three are led to journey to a distant country to deal with an evil fairy godmother who, among other things, is trying to make a girl marry a prince of questionable origin. There are a lot of references to familiar fairy tales, but they’re usually twisted around in an amusing way. I thought the overall plot in this book was far more coherent than that of most of the other Discworld books.

Although Magrat can be annoying sometimes, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are just hilarious and some of their reactions as they traveled through “foreign parts” made me laugh. One minor complaint I have is that, in Wyrd Sisters, the same characters referred to other places as “forn parts”. They seem to have inexplicably learned how to pronounce “foreign” since then, and for some reason I missed the “forn parts”.

Happily, there’s another Witches book only two books away on my Discworld list, so I’ll get the chance to revisit this subseries in the near future.

*Cadılar'dan hoşlanmıyorum. Diskdünya'yı seviyorum. Zorunlu olduğu için iyi adam olan bir karakterin sızlanmaları yerine Ogg Ana'nın her yabancı dili konuşabilme yeteneğini ve Magrat'ın naifliğini daha fazla okumak isterdim. Fakat bu sefer karşımızda masalları hikayesine ustaca oturtmuş ve biraz açık şekilde felsefe yapan Pratchett var. Öykünün harekete geçiren bir yönü olmayınca da roman uzatılmış paragraflarla kalmış. Karakterleri harekete geçiren güdüleri anlamak zor. Özellikle kitabın ana kötüsünün güdülerini anlayamadım. Diskdünya'ya devam ama Cadılar Dışarıda'da beğendiğim bir kitabı olmadı.

Тут теж все чудово, я памʼятала все в абстрактних деталях, тож приємно було згадати.
Відьми вирушають закордон, тут і гноми, і подорож круїзним лайнером, і бабуня, яка виграє в карти, і абсент з гонкою биків (привіт, Іспаніє) і Ґеноя (яка, виявляється, Новий Орлеанс - смішно, але в дитинстві я не знала нічого про Новий Орлеанс, і думала що це ну дуже дофантазована італійська Генуя, лол, а тепер я можу все яскраво уявити, зокрема завдяки серіалу Інтервʼю з Вампіром, який нещодавно дивилась). Забула що вже в цій книзі Ґрібо перетворювався на людину, у лісі були казки, а у Бабуні була зла сестра. І що в подорожі вони зустріли Ґолума. А ще ловелас Казанунда! Вже тут! Тітуня як завжди вогонь і найкращий персонаж (строчить шедевральні листи додому, постійно).

Ще там був дуже тяжкий момент, який я не пам’ятала, про заплутаного в своїй ідентичності вовка, якого стратили. Прям темний Пратчетт. Це вам вже не казочки.

Короче, чудово.

***July 29, 2016Ten years ago I went on a business trip to Baltimore, and got to meet an until-then imaginary friend from the defunct book site Readerville. It was lovely, not least of what was so charming was meeting my friend’s adult daughter who was charming and witty and shared her mother’s taste in Pratchett books. My kids were both still little, so grown-up offspring seemed so far away. And now I have a grown-up child, and another nearly so, and yes, sharing books with them is the best thing ever.

Oh I forgot how much fun this book was. Traveling with the witches had me laughing nonstop while thinking about how travelers behave and appear to others. And all the things about stories and their desire to happen and end. So good!

What happens when provincial professionals take a "business" trip and must reconcile the fact that things aren't quite done the same everywhere? This story shows that a good working knowledge and belief in oneself and abilities can adapt even when the language and lexicon
changes.

Ok, the plot is about a witch who inherits the position of fairy godmother and must stop a princess marrying a prince in a faraway kingdom. The previous FG knew she'd need help so she employed 'headology' to make sure her replacement is
accompanied by two older witches, one being the famous (and feared) Granny 'Esme' Weatherwax.

The party embark and have to deal with the ever changing landscape and folk. All they'd really like is decent food and the respect a witch should be automatically given.

They make their final destination and take on the resident witch who employs the use of image enhancing mirrors to increase her power and force the residents to adhere to stories - fairytale stories.

I have to say there's something very entertaining about grandmotherly ladies taking a road trip and kicking butt.

La joven que la recibe, Magrat, junto al resto del aquelarre, se desplazarán al lejano reino de Genua con la intención de cumplir la labor de un hada madrina sobre la princesa Emberella, una de las habitantes de la región en la que otra hada madrina, Lilith, está manipulando a todo el mundo y trata de inducir el matrimonio de Emberella. Decimo segundo libro de la serie MundoDisco.
