This is a nice short character study of a novel. Just like Capote's other works, it impeccably well written. Since this book is about the characters, not much really happens in it (until the end), so there's not much to say. I enjoyed it.

DNF. Good writing but I was bored out of my mind. I just could not care enough for spoiled brat Grady so whatever disaster she was about to ensue on and the consequences thereof had no effect on me.

A lovely book, almost Shakespearean in its tragedy. You can feel the beginnings of Breakfast at Tiffany's in this work as well. Pretty good for a work that was published almost entirely as is, with only a few minor necessary corrections from the editors. I'm glad they chose to publish it.

He loved her, he loved her, and until he'd loved her she had never minded being alone....

You can tell this was definitely unpolished and unfinished. I did not care one single bit for the main character until the tragic ending and everything felt boring and slow. I truly disliked this book.

There something about Truman Capote's voice that's just captivating. Atmosphere. And in Summer Crossing, 1940s New York comes to life with an easy eloquence. You can feel what the characters feel, whether you understand them or not. This short novel takes place one summer in the sweltering heat of New York City. Seventee-year-old socialite Grady McNeil's parents have gone to Europe, leaving her home alone. And alone, she can carry on her affair with war veteran parking lot attendant Clyde Manzer. Their relationship is difficult to define; neither has what you'd call stellar communication skills. They hide their feelings from one another, not wanting to show attachment. So the more they mean to each other, the more they keep each other at arms length. As the summer passes, the weather heats up, and Grady and Clyde's relationship takes on gravity that cannot be ignored. The end is sudden, but perhaps all the better for it. The languid days of summer are gone, and it's time to face reality, one way or the other.

This was a story Truman Capote threw away. In the trash. He didn't like it, and felt it "was thin, clever, unfelt." I'm with him on that, a little. Still, brass from TC is still something close to gold. That kept me in. . .Wikipedia does a good job filling in the story on how it was found, and why it took until 2005 to be published. . . .long after TC shuffled off this mortal coil. . . .

This writing is some of Truman's first work in the direction of a novel. . .and he's writing about a small family in New York, while he's living in New York, so it soaks up his day-to-day, and has a very New Yorky feel (to this person who has NEVER been to NY). Mom and Dad McNeil are heading to France and want to take daughter, Grady, with them, like they do every year. She's not having it. . .a bit of a brat, she is.

So this is tale of Grady McNeil playing house, the grown-up, in her very own home (with all expenses paid by Dad's accountants), experiencing freedoms of all kinds. She's young, beautiful (think Truman Capote beautiful - his women always are), inexperienced and gullible, with a large splash of blink-my-side-eyes confidence. Add two beaus, one Jewish, and one blue-eyed blonde, each from different economic strata. So goes the top of the slippery slope.

Grady's Summer Crossing into adulthood. . . .it's youthful breezy and easy.

Until it ain't.

It's complicated.
