Really disappointed in how ugly this book is. I had to put it down. I'm trying to find words for what's wrong with it-- probably that the narrator delights in the ugliness he describes, but there's no insight. Utterly corrosive. I think Capote's self loathing shapes his world view here. Really sad. I could not finish the first section and skipped to Answered Prayers. I may try to read the middle section, or I may just bring it back to my local bookshop that accepts trade in books. Disturbing.

Mucho chismorreo para mi gusto. Está decentemente bien escrito, pero muy vulgar. No me dijo nada. Supongo que también es por el hecho de que está incompleto.

Το Όταν οι προσευχές εισακούονται είναι ένα βιβλίο λίγο παράξενο. Πρόκειται για ένα ημιτελές μυθιστόρημα, ή καλύτερα κάποια κεφάλαια από αυτό, στα οποία όμως ο Τρούμαν Καπότε βγάζει αυτό το κάτι που κάνει την γραφή του ξεχωριστή. Η υπόθεση του ημιτελούς αυτού μυθιστορήματος πραγματεύεται τη ζωή του νεαρού Π. Μπ. Τζόουνς, μέσα από τα βιώματα που ο ίδιος ο αντιήρωας αφηγείται.

Ο Τζόουνς έχει βρεθεί σε ένα καθολικό ορφανοτροφείο από το οποίο θα το σκάσει στα 13 του. Πρόλαβε όμως ήδη να γνωρίσει την όχι και τόσο αναμάρτητη ζωή των παιδόφιλων μοναχών. Με το όνειρο να γίνει συγγραφέας το σκάει για την Νέα Υόρκη οπού για αν επιβιώσει, θα κάνει ότι έμαθε στο ορφανοτροφείο από τους μοναχούς και τη χριστιανική αγωγή του. Θα πουλάει το κορμί του στην αρχή για σοκολάτες, και στη συνέχεια καθώς θα ενηλικιώνεται για μερικά ή και λίγο περισσότερα δολάρια.

Ένας τέλειος τυχοδιώκτης, ένα ζωντανό εμπόρευμα, θα ταξιδέψει από την Αμερική στην Ευρώπη, θα γίνει φίλος και συνοδός επώνυμων, ανώνυμων και διαφορετικών φυλών και φύλων.

Μέσα από τον αντιήρωα του ο Καπότε βγάζει στο φως τις «άγνωστες» ζωές των διάσημων και επωνύμων. Αποδομεί την με τόσο κόπο ψευδεπίγραφη και κατασκευασμένη εικόνα του λεγόμενου Star System. Βλέπουμε πως στην ουσία πρόκειται για εγωπαθείς εξαρτημένους και ψεύτικους ανθρώπους, ανίκανους να συνάψουν οποιαδήποτε πραγματικά υγιή σχέση. Ψέματα, ίντριγκές και κουτσομπολιά είναι η βρώμα που κρύβεται πίσω από τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας.

Το ημιτελές αυτό μυθιστόρημα είναι μια καταγγελία στην αλλοτρίωση που προξενεί στο άτομο η σύγχρονη καπιταλιστική κοινωνία. Η ταξική διαστρωμάτωση είναι εμφανής μέσα στις σελίδες αποδεικνύοντας έτσι ότι ή θα είσαι εξουσιαστής και θα ζεις όμορφα τη σάπια ζωή σου, ή θα είσαι εξουσιαζόμενος και θα ζεις σαν ένα άδειο κουφάρι τρώγοντας ψίχουλα και κυνηγώντας άπιαστα όνειρα.

Η ματαιότητα με πολλές και διάφορες αποχρώσεις είναι το βασικό συναίσθημα που βγάζει αυτό το βιβλίο Ψεύτικες σχέσεις ανθρώπων ανίκανων να αγαπήσουν και αν ερωτευτούν όχι μόνο με άλλους ανθρώπους αλλά ακόμη και τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό

Θα μπορούσα λοιπόν να χαρακτηρίσω τον Π. Μπ. Τζόουνς σαν μια αρσενική Χόλυ (Πρόγευμα στο Τίφφανυς) ο οποίος αναλώνεται σε έναν κόσμο που εξ αρχής δεν είχε καμία θέση γι’ αυτόν. Χωρίς κάποια σταθερή δουλεία, πέρα από το να πουλάει τον εαυτό του, ο Τζόουνς δεν χωράει σε καμία νόρμα και απορρίπτει τον κοινωνικό του ρόλου που προβλέπονταν να παίξει. Είναι να αναλώσιμο υλικό για τα γρανάζια του συστήματος, που ζει από όνειρο σε όνειρο μέχρι που αντιλαμβάνεται πως όλα αυτά είναι εφιάλτες. Απογοητεύεται συνεχώς αλλά δεν το βάζει κάτω. Όμως αυτό που μένει στο τέλος είναι μια κενότητα και μια απογοήτευση, που βιώνεις ότι έχεις ζήσει μια ζωή χωρίς να ζεις.

Εν κατακλείδι το τι συμβαίνει όταν οι προσευχές εισακούονται δεν θα το μάθουμε ποτέ, αφού δεν ξέρουμε πιο είναι το τέλος του Π.Μπ.Τζόουνς. Βλέπουμε όμως τι συμβαίνει αν όταν οι «κατάρες» έχουν πέσει πάνω σου. Το ημιτελές αυτό μυθιστόρημα είναι μια καυστική περιγραφή της ματαιότητας της ίδιας της ζωή, και αποδόμηση των ονείρων και των βλέψεων για κοινωνική ανέλιξη και ενσωμάτωση που βασανίζουν την ανθρώπινη ψυχή.

I wasn't expecting too much from this book since I knew it was an unfinished work, but even so I was a little disappointed. It probably should not have been published. I also couldn't see how the final piece in the book, "La Cote Basque" could have caused such a scandal when first published. It caused Capote to be ostracized by all of his society friends, but it seemed awfully tame in this "spill your secrets at all times" age.

Eu daria duas estrelas a este livro se o livro se mantivesse lento como na primeira parte. Não me agrada a vida nocturna descrita nem o seu narrador. Goste da história da Kate e da coquette basque. Agrada-me que o escritor tenha metido no meio a cultura americano.

Verei se o próximo livro de Capote me convence.

Crude, self-indulgent, and - worse - boring.

Meravellosa i cruel. No li done les 5 estreles perquè "Kate McCloud", el segon de tres capítols, em sembla incomplet. "Monstres perfectes" és una obra mestra i "La Côte Basque" un prodigi narratiu.

Well. This was definitely lower on my list of Capote works to read, but after reading Swans of Fifth Avenue, it moved up. Truman certainly did out a lot of people's secrets, and not too subtly. I can see how Babe Paley would cut him off, how Gloria Vanderbilt would be livid, and even how Ann Woodward might be driven to suicide by the revelations in La Cote Basque. You can also feel how unfinished this work was, when it ended it did not feel ended. I think that feeling of loss is what made me feel like 3 stars was more honest than 4.

I recently read an article about Truman Capote and decided to read this unfinished manuscript. The title is a quote from St Teresa "More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones". This is the first three chapters that were published in magazines causing his estrangement from New York Society and his many benefactors. CNN's Anderson Cooper has said his Mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, was very hurt by the thinly veiled portrayal of her in the third chapter "La Cote Basque" she never forgave him. Rumor has it the rest of the manuscript is in a safe deposit box at a Wells Fargo Bank in Los Angeles, but I doubt this is true. It's sad this brilliant author who wrote "Breakfast At Tiffanys" and "In Cold Blood" died a lonely drug addict and alcoholic. I want to read his first novel "Other Voices, Other Rooms" it was an international literary success in 1948.

Why do people see shrinks? To tell someone their most secret woes and stories. They don't expect (or get) answers. They just wanna Let Go. Famous People, it seems, revealed all to Capote and were not happy when he put their "tales" in a book. He was blacklisted by Society after some chapters appeared in Esquire, and never finished what would have been a sensationally good novel. Capote was mortal. He cared what people thought.

Obra inacabada, fruto de constantes atrasos e renegociações com editoras. Sucessivamente ultrapassada por outros livros como ”In Cold Blood” – A Sangue Frio, tornou-se um ícone do voyeurismo social bissexual tornado narrativa.

Envolto em espectativa e polémica desde a sua génese, gerou tanto alarido quanto a cativante Holly Golightly (”Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, A Boneca de Luxo), sem nunca atingir a sua genialidade ou glamour.

”Answered Prayers” - Suplicas Atendidas é uma sucessão de três capítulos de uma obra dita maior, cujas páginas não publicadas nunca foram encontradas e/ou tornadas públicas.

Truman alterna entre a (média) eloquência e a verborreia controlada, transpõe vivências sociais de um meio que o comum dos mortais pouco conhece e dispara em todas as direcções, sem aparente fio condutor.

Torna-se por demais difícil acomodar na mesma estante literária, e lado a lado, este "Suplicas Atendidas", "A Sangue Frio" e mesmo "A Boneca de Luxo". Por muito que seja um “romance” não terminado, parece-me que a balança penderia mais para o lado do “pioraria ao longo dos restantes capítulos” do que para o prato do “endireitaria a caminho do estatuto de clássico”.

A linguagem de Truman aqui é outra, a musicalidade, classe e elegância também…

”Prefiro”, disse-me Miss Langman, “ter só dois garfos realmente bons do que uma dúzia apenas boa. É por isso que há tão poucos móveis nestas divisões. Só consigo viver com o melhor, mas não tenho dinheiro suficiente para o fazer.”
