Fiction. This is the story of Bobby and Jonathan -- best friends, almost brothers, almost in love -- how they grow up together, how they grow apart, how they meet Clare, and how they all try to make a home together. It sounds cozy -- I love self-made families -- but this is an exceedingly lonely book. No one's able to make any lasting connections and everyone's alone in one way or another. It's sad, but written so well. Cunningham has an easy way with language; his prose is simple and honest, with wonderful spots of color and noise: If Bobby moved with the methodical, slightly bovine will of a vacuum cleaner, sucking up each errand and task, Jonathan clattered along like an eggbeater. That's Clare speaking -- several characters take turns narrating -- and you can sense her resentment even through the humor. Cunningham's prose is delightful, but cutting. As is this book.

Three stars for affecting, sympathetic characters and Cunningham's effortlessly interesting prose.

Історія про стосунки таких різних, але таких близьких людей, про самотність, про смерть, про любов, про батьківство. Про батьківство — це окрема для мене історія. Про нескінченну любов до власної дитини в різних її проявах. Думаю, що якби прочитала цю книгу до народження сина, то сприйняття було б геть іншим.

А ще це історія про дім. Спочатку мені здалось, що це про той дім, про який йдеться у останній частині книги. Але насправді «дім на краю світу» у творі це не один дім, а кілька різних — у Клівленді, в Арізоні, на Род-Айленді, у Нью Йорку та у Вудстоку. Вони дуже відмінні, але кожен у свій час був частиною життя учасників історії.

Чудова історія! Сподіваюсь згодом перечитати її в оригіналі.

І окрема подяка перекладачці! Зазвичай, я не звертаю уваги на прізвище перекладача, але імʼя і прізвище «Ярослава Стріха» я запамʼятала. Друга книга в її перекладі, що я прочитала цього року, і обидві неймовірні!

I started out enjoying the book very much. But somewhere along the line, I stopped recognizing motivations of the characters. They're supposed to be unconventional, but I couldn't figure out why they were so. There was something opaque about each of the main trio - Jon, Bobby & Clare. Bobby, to begin with seems a very observant young person. He says of his father buying a Cadillac, that he was as skeptical as his older brother was thrilled. If his father was the kind of person who bought a car on a street corner, who knows what else he could do. But Bobby later on is an innocent. He's not just naive, he also seems mostly unaware of what is going around him. It's what I thought of him, anyway.

As for Jonathan, I didn't trust that guy one bit. He was a posturer, perhaps by necessity, and it's acknowledged within the story. It makes it hard for other people to get a bead on him, and that makes him a complex person, but unfortunately it was also hard for me as a reader to understand where he's coming from. As a gay man in 80s America, I can understand how hard it must have been for him, but that's just hindsight on my part - had I been ignorant of the persecution and of the AIDS epidemic, I don't think reading Jonathan would make me understand or sympathize for him.

I didn't like Clare at all, but I'm not sure we're at all meant to like her. She's the third angle in Bobby and Jon's relationship and for all that Jon says that he loves both of them, Clare ultimately is a nonentity. The other woman in their lives, Jon's mother Alice fairs a lot better, she nurtures both Jon and Bobby and has a voice that is her own. She's one part of the book that I did like. I listened to the book on audio, and it was perfectly fine. I think I made it to the end without zoning out too much on the strength of the narrators - Dallas Roberts (who was my least favorite, but he was still good), Colin Farrell, Jennifer Van Dyck & Jayne Entwistle. I have liked one book by Michael Cunningham, which was not The Hours, so it could be that he's not my type of author.

Чесно кажучи, я очікувала від книги набагато більшого (можливо саме через мої завищені очікування, така низька оцінка). Але, як на мене, книга абсолютно не розкрила тему поліаморних стосунків і навіть самих персонажів. Це просто історія про 3х дорослих травмованих людей, які не знають, що робити зі своїм життям.
Було багато описів та розділів, які не мали сенсу та глибини, а були неначе написанні для обʼєму самої книги.
Тому, на жаль, частіше за все в процесі читання мені було нудно і весь час я чекала, що ось-ось, щось відбудеться, щось зміниться і я почну дійсно насолоджуватися книгою, але цього не відбулося.

Love it, still love it. It's been the third time I've read it, so it's hard to say if it's this good for me because I first read it 25 years ago, back when I was a much more grateful and sensitive reader, or if it's just that remarkable. I understand the characters, every one of them. I feel their emotions, their thoughts, and I care about them, every time. I get the story, and the story gets me, without fail - every time.

I read this novel over twenty years ago and at the time I loved parts and was less sure of others. In particular I wasn't sure of the novel's overweening self-importance. Novels as statements of their time almost always fail to engage me, probably because I come to them long after the particular moment they set out to represent has passed.

But despite this I held in my memory an almost visceral love and attachment to parts of 'A Home at the End of the World' although until recently reading an excerpt of the novel in an old anthology (Waves: An Anthology of New Gay Fiction, edited by Ethan Morrden and published in in 1994) did I rediscover what I part of the novel I loved so much.

The excerpt in the anthology was from the very beginning of the novel, the parts dealing with Jonathan and his elder brother Carlton, and reading it again reminded me of what a powerful and beautiful writer Cunningham could be. It was the first part of the novel dealing with Jonathan and his brother and their parents as well as later, the next-door boy Bobby (not part of the excerpt in Waves) that had moved me greatly and, even if only in fragments had remained with me. It had honesty and truth that moved me. I will certainly reread the novel and maybe I will find things worth admiring in the later, New York, parts. It doesn't matter if I don't because those early lyrically beautiful pages describing the young Jonathan's adoration of his older brother and later involvement with Bobby are some of the finest prose any writer could hope to publish. For that reason I give the novel four stars and shelve it as well-worth-reading-again.

Я не розумію цю історію. Брешу, не так. Розумію і водночас ні.
Вона дивна і гіпнотична.
Про що вона? Про життя. Дивне, не припасоване до загальноприйнятих суспільних рамок життя.
Я ніби роздивлялась під лупою декількох людей, їх образи та історії.

Джонатан егоїстичний легкодух, що винить будь-кого в тому, що він не вписується в стандарт. Прийняти себе і той факт, що він іншої породи він не може, але вперто бере і приглядається до прямокутних рамок, коли йому потрібна інакша. Зміряти свої сторони, кути, опуклості й зробити щось кастомне на це в нього не вистачає духу.

Клер. О, Клер. Найбільша правдорубка щодо себе самої. Вона визначає і приймає свої хиби, почуття, особливості. Вона надивовижу зріла. Чимось вона пробудила в мені повагу до себе.

А Боббі найбільша загадка для мене. Його я не розумію, але жалію більше за всіх. Цьому хлопцеві життя навіть не дало шансу, але він давав його усім. І добро, і турботу, і піклування.

Кінцівка мене заплутала. Тому, я дуже радію, що випадково одразу по закінченню перечитала вірш, що відкриває цей текст. Все стало більш цілісно.

Читання було на диво легким і безсовісно гарним. Перекладачці та редакторці вдалося зробити звучання Каннінґема українською автентичним.

Сам текст мене заворожував, радше навіть гіпнотизував. Кожен раз, беручи книгу до рук, навіть в ті моменти, коли я просто намагалась боротись зі своєю залежністю від соцмереж і дешевого дофаміну, я проковтувала сторінку за сторінкою, не помічаючи як рахунок йде на десятки. Щось тут було, таке правдиве.

Надзвичайно красивий роман, про дивне банально не банальне життя, з його заплутаними вигинами, захопленнями і почуттями. Зустріч трьох зовсім різних людей, які прагнули одного, не повторити долю власних батьків і дати своїй дитині інше життя, чи вийшло, це автор залишає відкритим.

Для мене у цій книзі стали відкриттям інтимні сцени, небажання близькості, опис процесу простою мовою, без гіперболізованих словосполук і зайвих епітетів.

Se dovessi definire questo romanzo con una sola parola, userei inevitabilmente il termine "strano".
Strani sono i personaggi, tanto per cominciare: due gay poco convinti ed una donna divorziata che accetta un manage a trois con loro. Strana è la vicenda, strani sono i ragionamenti dei personaggi, con il loro contraddirsi continuamente, partire, fuggire, tornare, fuggire di nuovo. E strana è la via che scelgono, tutti e tre, per il loro futuro. Strani sono agli occhi della gente "normale", perché loro sono tutto meno che una famiglia "normale".
E' un romanzo strano perché alla fine ti lascia uno strano sapore in bocca. Perché, ed è evidente vista la vicenda narrata, puoi pure trovare una strada alternativa da percorrere, una vita vissuta ai confini del mondo e della società, ma non è detto tu riesca ad esserne davvero felice. Del resto, come accade sempre nella vita, c'è chi va e c'è chi resta.
Un romanzo toccante, originale, fuori dagli schemi, che ha presentato al mondo il talento di M. Cunningham.

A sad and poignant story. Loved the references to the artists mentioned and their music, took me back.

Publicada em 1990, a narrativa situa-se nas décadas de 1960 a 1980. Com imensas referências musicais e cinematográficas, retrata as relações complexas de três amigos que tentam viver juntos, formando uma família pouco convencional. A narrativa foca-se nos problemas da vida familiar, nas dúvidas dos jovens, da vida adulta, no envelhecimento e na perda, mas também na amizade, no amor e ainda no desenvolvimento da SIDA na comunidade homossexual.

Narrada a quatro vozes, de forma alternada, a narrativa desenrola-se à volta das vidas de Jonathan e Bobby, amigos de infância, inseparáveis, que desenvolvem uma relação obsessiva apenas quebrada quando um deles vai para a universidade. Contudo, a relação é retomada mais tarde e alargada a Clare com quem formarão um singular triângulo amoroso.

“Bobby e eu [Clare], Jonathan e eu, o nosso amor e amizade misturados, a desequilibrada família que tínhamos tentado construir – tudo isso me parecera no dia anterior mais um disparatado episódio da minha vida.” (p.251)

Trata-se de um livro forte, sensível, inquietante, muito bem escrito. O autor escreve sem pressa, com precisão e com afeição, preocupado em dar resposta às fragilidades, às incertezas, às inquietações que assolam as personagens ao longo da narrativa e que, provavelmente serão as suas, já que o romance está na primeira pessoa. Fica claro que este livro se centra muito nas opções de vida de cada um. Marcadas por alegrias, tristezas, angústias, decepções, fugas, todas deixam “pegadas” na complexa caminhada da vida e do relacionamento humano.

É uma leitura reveladora, intimista e emocionante. Gostei da abordagem ao tema, da forma como nos apresenta a fragilidade do ser humano, as suas dúvidas, os seus pensamentos, as suas contradições, necessidades e interesses. No livro, os quatro narradores têm tempo e espaço para exporem as suas histórias, as suas visões do mundo, as suas ambições e sonhos, ou então permanecerem inertes, mergulhados nos seus pensamentos, nos seus silêncios.
