I am not exactly enchanted, but this was certainly a good book that I am going to be thinking of, for a while.
The story is told by four different voices, Jonathan’s, Bobby’s, Clare's and Bobby’s mother’s, Alice. We get to know Jonathan and Bobby as boys in their respective families in a suburban Cleveland. We watch them develop a very deep connection in their teenage years. As time passes the relationship loosens for a while, until as grownup and independent people they end up together again, but this time in a fairly unusual living situation in the countryside outside of New York.
The story circles around convenience and expectations, both those of our own and those that others have towards us. It is also about parental love, and friendship and love and in general - or what passes as one, to an uninformed eye.
The relationships between characters in this book could have perhaps risen an eyebrow or two in the 1990s. Thirty years later it feels like something that passes without much of a fuss but Cunningham’s skill in portraying and developing his characters, their dilemmas and choices, still makes an impression.

Michael Cunningham is one of my favorite writers. He can make the mundane, everyday life of normal people come vividly to life through his words. While this story became a bit meandering and scattered at times, Cunningham's attention to detail and genuine love for the characters he has created shine through. I always recommend anything by this man.

Поки я читала, мене не полишало відчуття, що книга залишається для мене незбагненною. Здавалося, я не можу вловити її суть, але точно знаю, що вона є. Роман немов протистоїть бажанню «вкласти» його в рамки жанру чи коротко переказати фабулу. Після прочитання лишається відчуття, що отримав більше питань, ніж відповідей.

Головна тема роману, яку я все ж виділила для себе, — що таке дім?

Каннінгем подає ідею дому як мінливу, плинну субстанцію. Дім може бути тимчасовим, крихким, умовним. Але найважливіше — це люди, які його наповнюють.

Трохи про героїв:

Боббі: живе «на межі» після втрати брата. Він ніби перебуває поза життям, не маючи свого осердя, і саме це несвідомо притягує до нього інших.

Джонатан: шукає свій шлях і прийняття. Його постійний пошук гармонії (у сім’ї, у собі, серед друзів) перегукується з прагненням знайти місце, де можна бути собою.

Клер: уособлює внутрішній розрив між бажанням сталості та потребою в яскравих враженнях. Вона прагне побудувати свій «домашній всесвіт», але водночас боїться втратити себе в рутині буденності.

Еліс: трагедія людини, яка усвідомлює, що вже переросла свій дім. Але не здатна вирватися.
Їхня спільність — це їхні травми.

СНІД тут виступає як загрозливий монстр із майбутнього, що повільно насувається на героїв і проявляється лише наприкінці. Каннінгем написав роман про сім’ю, яка випадково утворюється в спробі захиститися від жорстокості зовнішнього світу.

Одне з найяскравіших вражень від книги — стиль письма. Те, що часто неможливо точно описати словами (втрату близької людини, постійний страх відкинення, покинутість), Каннінгем робить майже відчутним, ніби цей біль можна торкнутися руками. Він майстерно балансує між красою та грубою реальністю.

Автор апелює не до логіки, а до «потаємних кімнат» нашої душі.

Це твір, який неможливо повністю збагнути з одного прочитання, але можна відчути всім серцем.

4,5 ! Creo que de no haber visto la película primero quizás hubiera tardado mucho mas en leer este libro.
"Una casa en el fin del mundo" nos cuenta la historia de Jonathan y Bobby de su amistad desde los años 60 hasta los 80 y mas...
La primera parte al principio se me hizo lenta pero a medida que avanzaba me enganchaba mas, la segunda parte ya cuando aparece Clare me pareció de lo mejor!
En cambio la tercera y ultima parte no me termino de convencer, me hubiera gustado que las cosas quedaran un poco mas cerradas y mas bien como en la película(los errores de ver la película antes), por eso no le puse la nota perfecta pero de todas maneras me gusto mucho. Algo súper destacable es la narración, es un libro que esta muy bien escrito, con unas frases que te dejan pensando después de leerlas.
Sin duda es un libro que me dejó mucho.
Recomiendo el libro y la película!

Dünyanın Sonundaki Ev'de bütün bunlar var işte. Cunningham, bu kitabı Saatler'den 8 yıl önce yazmış. Bence Saatler'in temellerini atan kitap da bu olmuş; havası, dili, hisleri o kadar benziyor ki... Dünyanın Sonundaki Ev'de çocukluk arkadaşları olan Bobby ve Jonathan'ın birlikte geçirdikleri zamanlara, ikisinin de belli bir şeylerden ve biraz da birbirlerinden kaçıp sonra New York'ta tekrar bir araya gelmelerine tanık oluyoruz. Acılarını, hayal kırıklıklarını, seviçlerini, hepsini onlarla birlikte hissediyoruz. Cunningham hikayeyi farklı farklı karakterlerin ağzından anlatıyor; hepsini teker teker tanırken, bir yandan da diğerlerinin gözünden nasıl göründüklerine de şahit oluyoruz.

Not aldığım defterdekiler ve altını çizdiğim yerler dışında kitabın durumu şu anda resimde gördüğünüz gibi. Bu da Cunningham'in kelimeleri ne kadar ustaca kullandığını açıkça gösteriyor diye düşünüyorum.

Bu kısım biraz SPOILER! olacak ama değinmeden edemedim: hayatım boyunca yazıyla, yazmakla ilgili aldığım tüm derslerde "show, don't tell" diye diye kafamıza kafamıza vurdular. "Gosterin, anlatmayın" diyorlar yani. Yazarları, biraz da bunu yapabilme yetilerine göre ölçüyorum açıkçası. Beğenmediklerim, "soğuk dudak" yerine her seferinde "mermer dudak" diyor mesela. Cunningham ise Bobby'nin ağabeyinin ölümünün ardından nasıl bir ruh halinde olduğunu bir ceketle gösteriyor bize. This started out amazing, got kind of muddled for me in the middle and ended brilliantly. This is about a kind of love triangle between Jonathan, his best friend Bobby and Clare.

Jonathan and Bobby meet as teenagers and become inseperable. While Jonathan is gay, it is less clear what Bobby is, besides devoted to Jonathan. When Jonathan moves away to New York City (this is a Cunningham novel, so of course there's NYC... and complicated sibling relationships and some drugs, but not that many), he meets Clare. They, platonically, love each other. When Bobby moves to the city, he and Clare also fall in love - less platonically. And then Clare gets pregnant.

I don't want to spoil the story, but I can just say, that this novel isn't great because of the story itself but because of the wonderful writing style and its characters. This is also why I can't give the book 5 stars: Clare just never really clicked for me, especially in the chapters from her point of view. Was I not supposed to like her? Was I supposed to see this, ultimatively, as a love story between Jonathan and Bobby? I'm not sure. I did like the chapters from Jonathan's mother Alice, but I do always find it harder to relate to Cunningham's female characters and I don't think that's a coincidence. They just don't feel real, which is especially bad in novels that are so character-driven.

Despite this, I really enjoyed the book overall.

"A Home at the End of the World" was my first Cunningham's book and I can already say that it's not going to be the last one.

The book is evolving slowly, and my reading was slowed down even more, because I was traveling while I was reading it. I am glad about it, as it seemed to require time to think it over and digest it.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about "A Home at the End of the World" is that it is an awkward book. It is awkward, because it is too real, too intimate, too raw. It does not try to sell us any ilusions about relationships, love or future. Just the opposite, while reading it, I felt thrown into all the complexity of it and in some way it stayed with me even after I finished the book.

The book speaks in four different voices and takes the reader through a long period of lives of the four characters. I found the style and the frequent change of voices confusing at times, but at the same time I enjoyed the opportunity it gave me to live inside the different characters and understand them in a deeper and more complete way.

The four characters, childhood friends Jonathan and Bobby, their flatmate, lover and companion Clare and Jonathan's mother Alice struggle with accepting and understanding the difference between the expectations of their significant others and society, their own idealized visions of what life, home and family is, and the reality. The book is breaking stereotypes and boundaries, provoking us to question conventional wisdom and inviting us to look for our own personal answers to the big questions posed by life.

I am really happy I embarked upon this awkward journey and learned from seeing my own reflection in the different voices of the book.

Questo libro mi ha lasciato soprattutto un grande senso di angoscia. Non è brutto, ma non mi è piaciuto fino in fondo. Forse avrei voluto che l’autore affrontasse meglio alcune dinamiche o, forse, sono io che sono riuscita a capire veramente i personaggi.
