Cunningham's exploration of the themes of Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, as well as many of the events in Woolf's life, earned him a Pulitzer Prize along with a big budget award-winning film adaptation. The three storylines follow a day in each protagonist's life, with similar events and themes that echo through each. But, like the novel on which it is based, most of the fun in reading The Hours will come from the enjoyment of the prose and the reflections of the nuanced characters rather than the slow-moving contemplative storyline.
