Very hard to read, but challenging. I should get to it again. I liked the fact that the title is a triple pun.

Wonderful: giant concepts conveyed through excerpts of great fiction.

Although some is outdated. This was a good introduction to a number of topics, I read it in high school.

Even almost 45 years after its initial publication, this remains a fantastic and enthralling collection of pieces regarding human consciousness. Hofstadter and Dennett collaborated well in the assembly of these writings and with an appendix of further readings acknowledged that this book is just another stepping stone in the garden of forking paths.

An eclectic selection of essays and articles on cognition and the concept of self, particularly in the context of machine intelligence. This collection includes some of the canonical academic works: Turing's imitation game, Searle's Chinese Room, and Nagel's musing on bat consciousness. But it also includes a very colorful selection of fictional works from Stanislaw Lem, Terrel Miedaner, and Arnold Zuboff. Only through these lively pieces can the limits of these ideas really be explored: while the scientific works explore where we presently are in our understanding of the mind, the fictional excursions challenge this understanding in creative ways, and reveal where we might be heading. Hofstadter's reflections on each piece are also enjoyable, weaving them together. Honestly, Dennett would not have been missed.

A too-long collection of bizarre short stories that are difficult to extract any real value from. A few good thought experiments about what it means to be alive. But would be far more valuable if the book were much more condensed.

Some really interesting thought experiments and stories exploring the mystery of consciousness and the mind. It aims to widen your perspective playfully rather than give straightforward arguments so it’s quite a fun read, but presents more questions than answers. Would recommend!

I appreciate the way the authors (gatherers and commenters?) drag one's thoughts and convictions in so many opposing directions through the way they've ordered the readings.

As important as ever in times of large language models and generative AI, this book raises intriguing and fun questions concerning the relationship between m(I)nds, brains, and machines. Certainly many of the short essays will offer great food for thought — in the classroom and beyond.
