This book was fascinating and so engaging and easy to read for a book based in biology. In it, Jared Diamond brings up numerous facts about human sexuality that we all take for granted. Humans have sex for fun whether or not they are fertile, at any time of the month or year. Human females experience a distinct decline and then abrupt stop in fertility around middle age. Women usually have little idea of when they might be ovulating (unless they are using some form of modern technology to tell them). These simple facts of life which most of us accept as normal, are actually very, very odd in the rest of the animal kingdom. Diamond discusses how these traits and behaviors evolved and how they make us uniquely human.

I loved this book. Diamond is like a great professor of any subject--he makes you excited to go out and talk about his subject to your friends and to learn more on your own time.

I never thought I would like a non-fiction book about biology so much.

I read this whole book, cover to cover, by Jared Diamond, whose previous book that I'd read features in my top 10 non-fiction books of all time, to find out the answer to "why do we do it?" But, alas, in vain.
I learnt about the sexual practices and reproduction methods of baboon, gorilla, chimps, pigeons, frogs, elephants, ants, flies, and million other animals and birds whose name I heard for the first time, but didn't learn why is it fun for us, the humans, to have sex?
Every time someone in my vicinity found me reading this book, probably looked at me with raised eye-brow and took me for a pervert. All for nothing then?
Well, not exactly nothing. But…

โดยรวมหนังสือตั้งคำถามถึฃสิ่งที่เราเห็นอยู่ทั่ว ๆไป และมีคำตอบง่าย ๆ ให้กับคำถามเหล่านั้น แต่หนังสือพาเราคิดถึงเหตุผลที่ลึกซึ้งมากกว่าเดิม

ก็อ่านได้เพลิน ๆ ถึงจะมีบางช่วงง่วง ๆ หน่อย

Not sure this book answered the question it poses but it answered the question of why do humans have sex more than they need to? (ie without the aim of getting pregnant). However, this was not definitively answered more a choose your own reason in the vein of the Ian Livingstone books. Here’s the information do you choose to believe theory A or theory B? Diamond omits the glaringly obvious reason – that it feels good and as the only animal (with the exception of some of the great apes) with hedonistic tendencies it would seem a natural evolutionary step.

I don’t think anyone will be enlightened by this book. I don’t think there is going to be much new for anyone who has ever watched a nature documentary but it is a short, mildly interesting read in an accessible pleasant way. If it was a coffee it would be an inoffensive latte – you can’t go wrong with it but its not going to give you a jolt.

The Evolution of Human Sexuality, 1997) nos acerca a nuestro comportamiento sexual (y sociosexual) como especie, Homo sapiens, y mientras trata de explicarlo con bases científicas nos muestra que somos muy extraños en comparación a otros animales e incluso casi aberrantes si nos comparamos con otros mamíferos, incluso los de genéticas muy próximas.

Oh noes - an automated voice, this goes straight into the WPB

No, odnáším si trošku rozpačité dojmy. Že se nedozvíme odpověď na tu základní otázku, to mě až tak nepřekvapilo. Že jsou Diamondovy teorie někdy trochu vratké, to se dalo také čekat. Oproti Třetímu šimpanzi se ale zas tak moc nového nedozvíte, a to bylo docela zklamání.
Na druhou stranu je to pořád plné informací, zábavné a dobře napsané, rozhodně jsem se nenudil. Nově objevenými výrazy jako "mužská postkopulační dezerce" či "primární a sekundární samice" navíc jistě oslním v jakékoli společnosti :)
Takže výsledek někde mezi třemi a čtyřmi hvězdami - a dneska je venku ošklivě, tak dávám tři.

Cuando relaciona lo psicológico con el sexo es simplemente maravilloso. Ojalá si el sexo fuera divertido en verdad.
