The best part of this play was Pheres telling Admetus how much of a coward his son was. Other than that it was ok.

A little dissatisfied if im honest. I read this after The Silent Patient, hoping to gain more insight into the main character’s painting (named after this play). But Alcestis, while a good play, did nothing for me. I enjoyed the read, I did, im just a little disappointed. Also, Admetos’ character enraged me from the beginning and I don’t believe he deserves to get Alcestis back in the end- all because he lied and was nice to his friend?? And how come she can’t speak for three days? She deserves better than him. Admetos isn’t worthy of such a loyal lover.

i don’t really read greek mythology but it was a good read

On this small tragedy, Admetus participate on his wife Alcestis death, staying with her on her fate until the last moment, with their children looking, also. On the next scene he receives Heracles as his guest. Heracles at first wouldn't like to be on admetus palace, due to the host mourning. But then, the truth is told to Heracles, as he gets to know about Alcestis death. Heracles battles with Death in order to retrieve Alcestis, and then she is returned to Admetus. Everything ends good.

Probably the most entertaining and amusing Greek tragedy I've read thus far.
