I didn't like this book too much, because by the time I got a little ways into it, I started REALLY not liking the author, which discredited the advice he was giving. I liked his historical little stories about the startups and leadships of now huge companies, but I didn't like that he also talked briefly about the growth of his Mega-Church with thousands and thousands of followers, like convention-center churches and $7.8 million fundraisers for a new facility. That is nuts, and because of that little snippet he put in there, I definitely don't like this book, regardless of whether or not he's renowned as the business world's Leadership Expert!

I was hoping it was more motivational. Some of the examples did not go well with the chapters. It felt like this book was just thrown together to meet a deadline. I'll probably re-read it and see how it goes.

Three things demonstrate how myopic and outdated this book is in its conception of leadership: the fact that of all the people quoted on leadership or described to prove a point about leadership, 57 are men and 2 are women; this quote: "A truly valuable vision must have God in it. Only He knows your full capabilities"; and the fact that he uses baby boomers as an example of "younger people." (This book was published in 2002.)

This little book is a cliché- and buzzword-ridden mess. "To be a success in life, a person needs to be able to master skills in four areas: relationships, equipping, attitude, and leadership." How about being actually good at the things you want to achieve?

It cites dubious statistics, uses numbers dubiously to represent intangible things, and equates profits with success.

There might have been one or two useful tips in here but I'm not reading it again to find out. And the cover price is $10? Just watch a TED talk.

Also the author has published an edition of the Bible with "God's laws for leaders and leadership." Gross.

Personal Reflection

"Attitude 101" offers a compelling perspective on the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. Maxwell’s anecdotes and practical advice make the concepts relatable and actionable. The most compelling aspect is his emphasis on the transformative power of attitude, not just for personal growth but also for effective leadership. However, the book could benefit from more diverse examples beyond sports and business contexts to appeal to a broader audience.

Recommendation

I highly recommend "Attitude 101" to anyone in leadership roles, aspiring leaders, and individuals seeking personal development. It's particularly useful for professionals in business and management, as well as anyone interested in understanding how attitude influences success. Maxwell's insights provide valuable strategies for cultivating a positive mindset and leveraging it to overcome challenges and achieve goals.

Last note:

Maxwell idea that David picked five stones because he was preparing for Goliath and his four descendants is an interpretation that some scholars and theologians find plausible. However, the Bible does not explicitly state this reasoning. Overall, David's story is a powerful example of how faith in God can enable individuals to face and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges, regardless of the resources they have at their disposal.

For what the book is, Maxwell has distilled much knowledge about leadership in its tiny pages. Nothing earth-shattering, but good truths to bear in mind, such as:
* Q: Are Leaders born? A: Of course—how else can they come into this world? But nearly anyone can become a leader with the right training.
* Position does not make a leader. Leaders make the position.
* People are always a leader’s most important asset.

Maxwell spends a lot of time talking about lids (meaning, the maximum a leader can progress 1-10, restricted by his influence). Maxwell's got a lot of great quotes, and I am going to recommend his book for the pithy truisms alone. But this is not the tome to pick up to strategically revamp your leadership model at your company or school. Maxwell offers different examples of leaders in the corporate world without explaining the technical details. If you select this book as one part pep speech and one part revolutionary game-changer, you won't go wrong, but I wouldn't recommend it for much else.
