This is the second or third time I’ve read this. It’s been an extremely long time though, and there have been a great many books in between. So, I have to admit that I really didn’t remember all that much about it. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m glad for the reread and more excited than ever to continue the series re-read that I’ve decided to partake in. In this book, two sworn enemies have found themselves thrust together due to unforeseen circumstances in order to defeat the one greater and shared foe. As they journey together through the frozen Northlands of Midkemia, they not only battle the hardships of the land but also the constant distrust of each other. Only their common enemy keeps them moving forward. This book is filled with a whole lot of battles, strategies, and fighting. It’s a bit like getting a peek behind the scenes of a part of a long war that you never otherwise get a glimpse of. Since this is taking place while the other books in the larger series are going on, it fits in there and brings a sort of ‘humanity’ to both sides of the war. It’s a truly fun story. You can read this alone or as a whole with the rest of the books. I would just start at the beginning (with Magician) and progress from there, but that’s just my personal preference. I wouldn’t want to miss a single one. They are all most definitely worth it.
