The third and most disturbing series I delved into from Junji Ito was "Gyo: The Death Stench Creeps". In this harrowing tale, dead fish, controlled by sentient metal legs crafted by the military, make their way onto land and unleash terror upon the world. This plot was by far the most absurd yet simultaneously the most horrifying. The beautiful main heroine, Kaori, succumbs to a monstrous disease that causes her body to expel gas from all orifices, bloat to an alarming and unhealthy degree, and become covered in pus-filled boils.
At the outset, this series was incredibly spine-chilling. Fish with legs traipsing on land were soon joined by Great Whites with legs, then giant squids, hammerhead sharks, swordfish, and whales, all, as you might have guessed, with legs ambling on land. The visual imagery was truly terrifying. And then, the legs that animated these sea creatures began to take over humanity, attaching themselves to people and even adorable little puppies. At this point, the story descended into downright terror and became nauseatingly disturbing.
