Ok. Suddenly things got even weirder than usual around here.
And I loved it.
I had extremely high expectations for this manga because my history with Junji Ito already has a certain time (Uzumaki❤️). And I'm very happy not to have been disappointed. Not only is the story extremely fun (in a morbid way), but this edition of Pipoca & Nanquim looks beautiful (there's something about the fact that there's a cover that really gets to me).
Going on to what matters, the story of "Tomie" is contained in two volumes which, from what I understood of the first volume, are like an anthology of several not necessarily connected short stories. There are some characters who survive more than one story (indicating some connection), but this is not the rule. All of these stories involve the presence of Tomie, a mysterious girl and whose simple presence makes men fall in love with her. The only problem is that this passion soon turns into a murderous instinct directed towards the girl. I'm not going to go into the merit of this premise of an adolescent who seduces boys just by existing and that these guys, then, go crazy with the desire to kill her, because yes, it's very problematic. A talk for another time, but that I would really like to have.
If you already know something about Junji Ito, know that you will find 60% of these things here. "Tomie" was the first manga he made, at 24 years old, so we can notice, especially in the drawings, that all the potential of the author and artist, at the time, had not yet been unlocked. If everything is new to you, think of "The Scream" or "The Call" (in the original versions), only with gore at speed 5. And then be prepared to be scared in the first parts, when you're caught off guard, and then be afraid to turn each page, like I was.
Read it if you like Japanese horror/thriller, stories without a very clear ending and things that happen out of nowhere without much explanation, but that leave you so shocked that you don't even have much time to think straight.
Tomie, the first work of the famous author, consists of a short section in a weekly magazine. This book is also a compilation of these sections. Since readers read the magazine in the form of "let's see what will happen in Tomie this time", the format of the story is also determined accordingly. There was a similar format in Uzumaki, which we can call the author's masterful work, but when all the numbers came together, it created a unity. Here, however, everything is different and unrelated except for a three-part story. In such a situation, I couldn't hold myself. Instead, I opened it in the middle, read a section and closed it. If you have read Junji Ito before in terms of story and drawing, you know what you will find. The three-part long story was the one I liked the most among the stories. The element of curiosity was present only in that one. In the others, it was too obvious how things would turn out. Once you understand the formula, the pleasure of reading the same incident happening over and over again is gone.
Hanya butuh sekali duduk untuk gue nyelesaiin manga ini. The premise of this manga by Junji Ito focuses on Tomie, a young woman who is incredibly beautiful but carries a deadly curse. Her beauty is so captivating that it attracts everyone, especially men, to the point where they become insanely obsessed. This obsession often leads to acts of violence, murder, and madness. Even though Tomie is frequently killed by those around her, she always returns to life in a terrifying way, including having regeneration and the ability to split herself, which I find quite creepy.
