Pop Sugar Reading Challenge 2018

The Pop Sugar Reading Challenge for 2018 is an exciting opportunity for book lovers to explore a wide variety of literature. One of the interesting categories in this challenge is "Un libro acerca de un villano o antihéroe", which means "A book about a villain or antihero". This category allows readers to delve into the complex and often fascinating minds of those who are not the traditional heroes.

Books that fall into this category can offer unique perspectives and insights. They can show us the motives and backgrounds of villains, making us understand their actions in a new light. Antiheroes, on the other hand, are characters who may have some heroic qualities but also have flaws or engage in morally ambiguous behavior. Reading about them can make us question our own definitions of right and wrong.

Whether it's a classic novel or a modern thriller, a book about a villain or antihero can be a captivating and thought-provoking read. It can expand our understanding of human nature and add a new dimension to our reading experience. So, if you're up for the challenge, pick up a book that fits this category and embark on a journey into the dark side of literature.

I always thought this was a game of cat and mouse.

I imagined one side being the cunning cat, constantly chasing and trying to catch the elusive mouse.

But as I've come to realize, it's really just cat and cat.

Both parties are equally sly, equally strategic.

There is no clear-cut victim or predator.

Instead, it's a battle of wits and skills between two similar opponents.

It's a game where each move is calculated, each decision is crucial.

And in this game of cat and cat, the outcome is never certain.

It keeps me on my toes, always guessing and anticipating the next move.

It's a fascinating and challenging game that I continue to play with great interest.

This one was truly amazing! OMG!

It was yet another excellent read. We follow Light as he attempts to evade detection. This time, we witness his actions towards Raye and the elimination of the FBI agents. The way he does it is simply fascinating. Then, there's the police meeting where L is revealed, and that moment is truly awesome. Their focus on this front is intense. After that, Light meets Ray's fiancee, and what he does next is not only fascinating but also changes numerous things and ups the stakes like no other. I love the entire process of how he goes about taking down or evading his enemies. Finally, the extreme steps taken by L add another layer of excitement.

It has become a thrilling cat and mouse game between the two of them. It's written so well, with two characters at the top of their game, evading each other while other players are also involved. The moral and philosophical arguments this manga presents are truly awesome, and I love it for that. Plus, the art has improved significantly. There are also humorous moments with Ryuk that I really enjoy. Once again, it's a solid volume.

I am completely and utterly freaking loving this series! I'm only two books in, and yet I'm already head over heels in love with L. =)

Look at my Funko of L =) It's so cool! I really wanted to get Ryuk too, but unfortunately, they messed his up. I don't like how it looks one bit, and that makes me really mad because he's such a cool character. Sigh....

OH My Lord! I really want them to take down Light! I hate him with a passion!

Okay, in the beginning when he was only killing evil people, that wasn't so bad. But now, he's crossed the line and is killing innocent people. And then when he killed someone I liked and, I'm guessing, killed the person who would have come the closest to catching him, I wanted to scream bloody murder! I mean, that person was so smart at first, and then they did something stupid and Light had them. Although, I'm really hoping that in the next book, that person will be like: Surprise! He didn't get me. Sigh....

Anyhoo, I'm truly loving these books (as I've said numerous times already) and I can't wait for more!

NOTE:

If anyone can give me more recommendations for Manga, I would be extremely grateful. I've already received a few from my Goodreads friend, Petrik, but I'm still on the hunt for more. Hook me up with lists, people!

Excellent again, showing how truly evil Light can be.

It is truly remarkable to witness the depth of his malevolence.

The memories of the anime series that I adored and the books are simply amazing.

They bring back a flood of emotions and excitement.

The way Light's character is developed, with his complex motives and actions, keeps the viewers and readers on the edge of their seats.

His transformation from a seemingly ordinary student to a power-hungry vigilante is both fascinating and terrifying.

The anime and the books do an excellent job of portraying the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from his actions.

It makes us question our own beliefs and values.

Overall, it is a captivating and thought-provoking series that will always hold a special place in my heart.

Quickly falling in love with the fast pace!

It's truly crazy how quickly L works. In this series, which consists of only twelve books, the speed at which things progress is astonishing.

L's actions and decisions seem to unfold in the blink of an eye, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat.

As we move onward to #3 in the series, the anticipation is palpable.

What new twists and turns will L encounter? How will the story continue to develop at this breakneck pace?

It's exciting to think about, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead for L and the rest of the characters in this thrilling series.

With only a limited number of books, each one feels like a precious gem, and I'm eager to uncover the secrets and mysteries that await within the pages of #3.

So, onward we go, ready to embrace the fast-paced adventure that lies ahead!

Rereading this manga after several years and with more knowledge of psychology gives this new reading a different flavor. It's incredible how the years make one change (mature) and also change ideological and ethical postures. In my case, when I first approached this story through the anime and then the manga, I was more on Light's side than L's, and in fact, I shared Light's vision of world cleansing. But now, with 10 more years, I don't say I'm on L's side, but rather that I understand that both are two sides of the same coin. And the fact that L wants to catch Kira is not because of his ethical code of justice but for the same reasons that Light doesn't want to be caught: he doesn't want to lose. L mentions this in this volume, stating that Kira has a childish character and doesn't like to lose, and he knows this because he himself is like that. Light and his idea of liberating the world from criminals don't find their motivation in justice but in his own ego. He doesn't do it because he's a paladin of justice but because he's a narcissistic psychopath who wants to be adored as a god in the future. That's why, already at the end of the first volume and throughout the second, his goals start to be distorted when he's cornered or provoked by L, and he breaks his pattern of only killing criminals and doesn't flinch when he has to kill 12 FBI agents.

It's really admirable the psychological handling that Ohba has of the characters. We already know that Light is a psychopath and also suffers from narcissistic personality disorder in its grandiose mode. He thinks he's the best in everything and maybe in some areas he is, but deep down, he's just a poor guy in need of attention. L, on the other hand, can also be considered a psychopath. He has a high degree of intelligence, is not sociable, the empathy he shows sometimes is difficult to determine, and his behavior in general is eccentric. It's said that Ohba's intention was for L to be within the Asperger's spectrum, and maybe that would explain many of his eccentric behaviors. The truth is that both Light and L, despite being enemies, have much more in common than they think. And it's precisely in this game of competition, rivalry, and provocation and how both react that one realizes that neither is really seeking justice but rather they are playing a simple game to see who is more ingenious and who steps on whose tail.

Death Note in its second volume introduces an interesting character despite his brief appearance: Naomi Misora, the fiancée of Ray Penbar, the FBI agent who investigates Light. It's interesting how an intertext is generated if one wants to, and perhaps it wasn't thought of at the time the manga was published, since Naomi Misora is one of the main characters in the novel in which she investigates the case of a serial killer in Los Angeles along with L. The fact that a character who appears so briefly leaves such a notable mark speaks well of the way the authors constructed the story and its actors.

Undoubtedly, one of the gems of the manga.

L and Light, who are as clever as can be, engage in an interesting game.

L is extremely intelligent, and Light shows just how smart he is as well. The second volume, in my opinion, is even better than the first.

L deduces things at a quicker pace, which adds to the excitement. The intensity of their battle of wits will have you sitting on the edge of your chair!

Although I already knew what was going to happen since I have seen the anime, this still managed to make my heart race.

It is truly so good! The story is filled with twists and turns that keep you hooked from start to finish. The characters are well-developed, and their interactions are both engaging and thought-provoking.

Whether you are a fan of the anime or not, this volume is definitely worth reading. It will leave you eager to see what happens next in the thrilling saga of L and Light.

It’s no wonder Death Note is often hailed as the greatest psychological thriller of all time.

This is just the beginning, yet the rivalry between the antihero Light Yagami and the mysterious task force detective L has already been developed unbelievably well. The way their dynamic unfolds is truly brilliant. When one takes a seemingly monumental step towards victory, the other is right back on their trail in an instant.

It’s evident why this series is a classic among anime and manga fans. It handles thriller tropes in ways that I have never before witnessed in fiction.

A few years ago, I watched about halfway through this anime. Although I never completed it, Raye Penbar and Naomi Misora, in my opinion, were responsible for some of the most memorable scenes in this franchise. The moment when the subway doors close just as Raye figures it all out? It gives me chills. And Naomi is briefly such an awesome threat against Light that it’s really disheartening to see her go so soon.

Either way, this was a fantastic volume. I can’t wait to finally read this series from start to finish and discover all the aspects that make Death Note so beloved!

This just got a whole lot interesting.

Also, it is getting so questionable on the part of Light now. And L. I have so many questions. This is so well written and smart.

The chess-like battle of wits between Light Yagami and L (who goes by a few names) is one of the aspects of Death Note that makes it so captivating. This psychological conflict can be compared to that between Sherlock Holmes and his adversary Moriarty. Both characters are constantly planning how to outsmart each other ten steps ahead of time. Even when one of them appears to be in a position of power, the other manages to pull the wool over the reader's eyes.

If you haven't read the series, you're probably thinking "why doesn't Light just use the Death Note to kill L then." But that's the beauty of the story, as the Death Note's rules create restrictions on how Light can act.
