Yumi Hotta, Hikaru no Go, vol. 10: Lifeline (ViZ, 1998)

The Pro Test persists, and as the book commences, Hikaru remains undefeated. However, he now faces his most formidable adversaries yet, namely Isumi and Ochi. This volume centers almost exclusively on the matches, presenting a captivating display of strategic gameplay.

Accompanying the main storyline is an intriguing subplot. Ochi's grandfather reaches out to Toya for tutoring, adding an extra layer of complexity to the narrative. The development of the characters and their relationships continues to unfold in a fascinating manner.

Overall, this series continues to be phenomenal, maintaining its high standard of quality. The engaging plot, well-developed characters, and intense match scenes make it a must-read for fans of the genre. With each volume, the story grows stronger, leaving readers eagerly anticipating what lies ahead. ****

A particularly enjoyable volume in a very enjoyable series.

To some, it may seem small, but I truly valued how luck and nerve were emphasized. Given the high level of skill among the vast majority of these characters, even Hikaru at this stage, it is incredibly true that much of the tension will ultimately come down to complete chance!

And yet, it would be so easy to present it as pure genius on the part of any given character - because that's what we (at least in North America) tend to do. We place such a heavy burden on ourselves to succeed when, in reality, a large portion of it is not even within our control.

And I'm not taking this personally at all, lol.

But will they really ever guess what's truly happening? Seriously?

This volume really makes you think about the role of chance and skill in various situations. It shows that even in a world of highly capable characters, luck can play a significant role.

It also makes one reflect on our own attitudes towards success and how we often overemphasize our own abilities while忽视 the role of external factors.

Overall, it's a thought-provoking and enjoyable addition to the series.

The Pro Exams are like an unending marathon that keeps on going. However, Hikaru is truly shining through and making each and every volume of this manga even more captivating and intriguing.

The growth of the characters over the past few volumes is very much evident. It's this growth that makes the volume you hold in your hands even more fascinating. Akira, in particular, is becoming increasingly intrigued by his "rival" and has a strong desire to see just how much he has developed.

This volume feels especially satisfying as the seeds that were planted in the previous chapters are now starting to bloom. The art in this manga is truly great, and the story is equally excellent. The combination of these two elements makes it a must-read manga. It's a manga that will keep you hooked from start to finish and leave you eagerly anticipating the next volume.

The protest continues and intensifies for the main character Hikaru and his insei (professional Go player apprentice) friends.

This situation brings about a series of challenges and difficulties for them. However, it also becomes an opportunity for their growth and development.

That said, one of the main draws of this series is seeing Hikaru grow as a go player. In this volume, this aspect is presented in spades.

We can witness Hikaru's determination and hard work as he faces various opponents and overcomes numerous obstacles. His skills and strategies in playing Go continue to improve, and he gradually becomes a more formidable player.

The story not only focuses on Hikaru's progress in Go but also delves into the relationships and emotions of the characters. We can see the support and friendship among Hikaru and his insei friends, which adds depth and warmth to the story.

Overall, this volume of the series is a captivating and engaging read that will keep readers hooked from beginning to end.

The protest continues!

I truly love the way these creators conduct a 'tournament arc' in a round-robin fashion like this. Hikaru is undoubtedly the main character. We witness him achieving victories (and perhaps even suffering defeats???) against certain characters. The spotlight is constantly on him. However, it's not always from his perspective!

We encounter Mr. Tsubaki once again and observe how he copes with the stress in contrast to Hikaru. We see Isumi beginning to crack under pressure, and he has his own little arc regarding his playing style. Ochi, Hikaru's fated final opponent in the last game of the test, takes up most of the story. How he prepares for Hikaru, his thoughts about Hikaru, and his pride throughout the tournament are all significant plot elements. We gain a deeper understanding of Hikaru by examining his peers in the pro test rather than seeing him make remarkable personal progress.

Surprisingly, we hardly see any of the actual go games. This would be a letdown for many topical manga, yet somehow they manage to make it work! It's more about the characters' motivations and the mental fortitude required to overcome their losses rather than the gameplay itself. We breeze through several games in the pro test, which simply implies that the games we do see are even more crucial. Why are these particular games being shown to us out of all of them? With dozens of games, why is this the only one we witness unfold? What makes it so essential? The actual act of playing go, rather than merely talking about or thinking about it, serves as a great 'action scene' amidst all the other drama.

This volume was really exciting!

The desperate look on Mr. Igaku's face was scary. But still, it was sad that he lost. Ochiai doesn't like losing much. So why is he the strongest person? The ones taking the professional exam are always Mr. Igaku, Waya, and Shindo. Everyone becoming obvious is no good. I really like Mr. Igaku and it would be bad if I couldn't meet him.

It seems that the competition in this volume was extremely intense. Mr. Igaku's efforts and struggles were vividly presented. Although he lost in the end, his performance still left a deep impression. The relationship between the characters and their different attitudes towards the game also added to the complexity and interest of the story.

Overall, this volume was a great read, full of excitement, tension, and emotional moments. It made me look forward to the next volume even more to see what will happen next in the world of these Go players.

The main round of the Pro Go exams is still in progress.

Hikaru has changed. Not only has his ability improved, but his mindset has also undergone a transformation, and the players around him are gradually realizing this.

Akira Toya is curious about just how good of a Go player Hikaru has become. He learned about Hikaru's remarkable victory in the game against Hong Suyong, the insei from South Korea.

Akira is eager to discover how long it will take for Hikaru to catch up with him. For the next three weeks, until the end of the exams, he is dedicated to teaching Ochi Go. His intention is that when Ochi Go eventually becomes Hikaru's opponent, he will be able to defeat him.

This shows Akira's competitive spirit and his determination to stay ahead in the world of Go.

Meanwhile, Hikaru continues to progress and surprise everyone with his newfound skills and strategies.

The stage is set for an exciting showdown between these two Go prodigies in the future.

Going pro is just a step.

It is not the end goal but rather the beginning of a new journey.

When athletes decide to go pro, they enter a world of intense competition and high expectations.

They must train harder, sacrifice more, and face greater challenges than ever before.

However, going pro also brings many opportunities.

Athletes can earn a living doing what they love, travel the world, and inspire others.

They become role models and representatives of their sport.

But it is important to remember that going pro is not for everyone.

It requires a special combination of talent, dedication, and perseverance.

Not all athletes will make it to the professional level, and that's okay.

The important thing is to follow your passion and do your best.

Whether you go pro or not, the experience and growth you gain along the way will be invaluable.

I truly have a great affection for the competitiveness that each and every character in this story possesses. It is extremely cool to witness the process of progression that a professional Go player experiences, even if it has been significantly simplified. The art in this work is simply amazing, like a burning fire
