2020 Read #41

I'm just methodically working through this series, one volume at a time.

It's not my absolute favorite shojo fantasy, but there are certain aspects of it that make me think it might have had an influence on series such as Inuyasha and Yona of the Dawn.

After all, media doesn't exist in a vacuum. Each work is influenced by and in turn influences other works.

As I read through this particular series, I can see the seeds of ideas that might have been expanded upon and developed in those other, more well-known series.

It's interesting to think about how the creative process works and how different works can inspire and build upon each other.

Even though this series might not be at the top of my personal favorites list, it still has its own value and significance in the world of shojo fantasy.

Perhaps with each subsequent volume, I'll discover more connections and see even more clearly how it fits into the larger tapestry of media.

So many things to love here!

I truly adore the time that has been spent on building the relationships. The pacing of the story is just perfect, making it feel extremely real and natural. It's as if you are right there in the midst of the events, experiencing everything along with the characters.

I also have a special fondness for the story about Izark at the end. Finally, we get a glimpse into who he was, and it's a fascinating revelation. The hints to his childhood are absolutely wonderful, adding depth and complexity to his character.

Overall, this series has been steadily building and developing into something rather special. It has a charm and allure that keeps you hooked from start to finish. I can't wait to read the rest of it and see where the story takes us next. I really don't know why more people don't know about this one. It's a hidden gem that deserves to be discovered and enjoyed by a wider audience.

Noriko's sudden declaration of "I love you" came as a bit of a surprise.

Although their relationship had indeed had some cute moments, it really hadn't reached the stage where such a profound expression of love seemed appropriate.

It was almost as if Noriko had jumped the gun, leaving the other person perhaps a bit stunned and unsure how to respond.

Lol, that girl really knows how to make an entrance with her bold statement.

Maybe she just couldn't hold back her feelings any longer, but it definitely added an interesting twist to their budding romance.

Now, it will be interesting to see how the other person reacts and whether this unexpected proclamation will bring them closer or cause a bit of a rift.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Noriko and her love interest.

Ohhh I knew it! I was right about Izark!!!

That moment when Nori reaches out for him, crying, telling him to not leave her *sobs* Oh, my heart!!!!!

I had this hunch all along, and now it's been confirmed. Izark has such an important role to play in this story.

When Nori reaches out to him, her tears flowing freely, it's a heart-wrenching scene.

You can feel the depth of her emotion and the desperation in her voice as she pleads with him to stay.

It makes you wonder what will happen next. Will Izark be able to resist her plea and leave?

Or will he be moved by her tears and stay by her side?

The anticipation is killing me! I can't wait to find out how this story unfolds.

It is truly a breath of fresh air to come across a manga heroine who is neither overly voluptuous nor irritating. And yet, here we are.

I have a great penchant for stories set in enchanted woodlands, so this volume was an absolute delight.

Noriko, Izark, and their traveling companions find themselves lost in a forest teeming with monsters and ghosts. Izark, that poor demon boy, has a rather rough go of it (once again).

Their adventures in this mysterious and perilous forest are filled with excitement, danger, and unexpected twists.

We follow their journey as they try to find their way out and face the various challenges that come their way.

The characters are well-developed, and their interactions add depth and charm to the story.

The artwork is also quite stunning, bringing the enchanted woodland and its inhabitants to life in vivid detail.

Overall, this manga is a must-read for fans of fantasy and adventure.

Ok, so this review of From Far Away will cover volumes five to nine.

I must say that as the series progresses into the later volumes, it gets a bit better. The villains make their appearance, there are more fight scenes, and we gain a bit more character depth and development. At first, I expected something similar to the transition from volume one to two, where it starts well but then gets a bit dull at the end. Surprisingly, it doesn't, and it becomes more interesting.

We get to see more of Izark and his power as the sky demon. There are instances where there's more to his power than just being the sky demon. When Noriko was taken away and about to have her blood taken, Izark transformed and went after her. When Noriko escaped and ran to Izark, calling his name, he saw her and grew wings. (Of course, he doesn't remember this.) He flew away with Noriko. As I recall, someone mentioned that this was his "true power" or something like that. Anyway, the power he has looks more heavenly than evil when Noriko is by his side.

Noriko is still quite likable. She's probably one of the most likable "damsels in distress" I've ever seen. She's kind, shy, has a good heart, and does her best to help others when she can to make up for being rescued all the time. And seeing how she is out of her normal environment, it makes sense for her to be rescued. I also like that she's not stupid. She thinks things through and usually gets good results. (I know I've mentioned this a lot, but I'll keep repeating it.) She's also clumsy at times, but she still has this certain charm that makes her so nice, and everyone is drawn to her and likes her very much. Especially Izark, who is comforted and loved by her because she accepts him for who he is and still wants to be with him even after seeing his powers, but also recognizes the burden he places on his shoulders and tries to help in any way she can.

Izark is still wonderful, and I love him just as much as I love Noriko. We get to see more of him as the series progresses, but we also see a side of him that we weren't able to see until he grew closer to Noriko. He's quiet, thoughtful, shy, calm, and very protective of Noriko. It can get annoying when he won't let her go into town just to buy some supplies, but then again, I don't blame him. Almost everywhere they go, someone is out to get them. So his protectiveness doesn't bother me too much. He also seems to have an inner conflict with himself that appears in later volumes, and I won't spoil anything, but I will say that it makes him very interesting and incredibly likable.

The villains, Lord Rachef and Keimos, appear again, but they don't do much except for a few cliché things. Keimos fights Izark, and Rachef has Noriko taken as bait for Izark to transform, which is just boring. What's even more boring about them is their motive. It's just cliché and overused. They want Izark's sky demon power to take control. Hmm... sound familiar?

The other side characters are interesting, and I've mentioned them before, but they are still likable. They don't appear too often, and because of certain events, Izark and Noriko leave the group and go on their own to not endanger anyone. Ok, seems reasonable, but what are they going to do? Just wander around? Ok, but for how long and what's the point? The villains always find them, and they end up fighting or running for their lives. So it doesn't even matter.

There was also a moment where Gaya's sister was talking about bringing fate into her own hands, which I thought was a really good conversation. But it still leaves one major concern that keeps this manga from being a five. What does the prophecy say that Noriko and Izark are going to do? Do they bring chaos or war or something? In the first volume, it was a big deal, but guess what it said? The prophecy said that they would bring uncertainty. Really? Even the prophecy doesn't know what's going on! Seriously, what the hell? Are they supposed to be good or evil? If the prophecy and seers don't know, then what's the big deal?

And another thing, why does Geena see darkness around Izark and Noriko while Gaya's sister saw light? Is it because of their great power that brings darkness but their love towards each other gives off light? If that's the case, why does one see darkness while the other saw light? What's going on?! Don't leave me hanging, please???????

Oh, and apparently nobody knew who they were, and the villains found out that they were human and didn't know what. Which is odd. If that's the case, then what were you looking for? A huge demon or something that didn't look normal? Even the seers couldn't see that tiny detail?! Anyway......

Besides those nitpicks and the villains, I don't have any more problems with this manga series. In fact, I'm looking forward to completing this series.

This is my favourite volume so far!

We are able to delve deeper and learn more about Izark and his past. It is truly fascinating to uncover the details of his life and how it has led him to where he is now. Additionally, we get to explore the connection between Noriko and his destiny. Noriko's character starts to come more into sharp focus. We begin to understand what abilities she might possess within this universe.

However, there are still many mysteries surrounding her. We are left in the dark as to what she actually is or what she can truly do. Moreover, the question of why she turned up in this universe in the first place remains unanswered. These unanswered questions only add to the allure and excitement of the story, making me eager to read on and discover more about these characters and their adventures.

The excitement in this fifth installment of Kyoko Hikawa's fourteen-volume manga epic shows no sign of stopping. It tells the story of Noriko, a young schoolgirl who is mysteriously transported to a strange world where her arrival has been foretold in a prophecy. Izark, a mysterious wandering warrior, comes to her aid and plays an important role in the same prophecy.

Picking up where the fourth installment left off, Izark battles a strange and malicious monster in the White Mist Forest. The story follows the companions - Izark and Noriko, Gaya, Agol and Geena, Barago, Jeida and his sons - as they try to escape the dangerous situation. Noriko discovers that the beautiful "ghost" is Irktule, the spirit of the white mist tree, and they team up to fight their enemy.

As they make their way to Guzena, hoping to find shelter with Gaya's seeress sister, flashbacks reveal important information about the characters. Izark's true identity as the is revealed, and his relationship with Gaya, who taught him swordplay, is clarified.

My enjoyment of this series keeps growing with each volume. Thanks to my friend Jeannette for introducing it to me! I raced through this fifth installment, which is full of action and character development. Izark's destiny and his relationship with Gaya are significant revelations, and Noriko's declaration of love is a satisfying moment. Overall, it's an engrossing volume that left me eager to start the sixth.
