I read this book, being aware that it is part of an upcoming curriculum adoption, and I was truly disappointed.

Looking at the writing alone, even without considering the other issues I have with the text, I simply did not find it to be very engaging. It failed to capture my interest and hold my attention.

And then there is the title. Using the term "girls" when the book is mainly about adults (except for the last 2 entries) seems rather odd. Maybe the author and/or illustrator think it's acceptable to refer to adults as "girls," but as a woman in my 40s, I no longer appreciate being called a girl.

Moreover, there is an overall lack of diversity in the representation within this text. There was only a brief mention of Madame C.J. Walker in the introduction, and the inclusion of Valerie L. Thomas, whose illustrated portrait makes her look Caucasian. Although she was the last adult inventor in the text, it still feels insufficient.

This book, however, can be used to teach students critical literacy skills. It can prompt discussions about whose stories are included and whose are left out, as well as issues related to gendered language. By analyzing these aspects, students can develop a more nuanced understanding of the world around them.

I find myself in a dilemma as to whom I should give this book, and I may even order additional copies for my nieces and the library.

Although it is just a paperback, the stories it contains are truly outstanding.

This book would be an excellent addition to pediatricians' offices.

I had a particular fondness for reading about the invention of the Snugli. In fact, I purchased one way back in 1980 and, amazingly, I still have it to this day! I vividly remember the joy of carrying my first baby around in it. It had this unique feeling as if I was still pregnant, but with the added bonus that I could peek inside and catch a glimpse of my precious little Evy. That was something I had been longing to do throughout those 9 months of pregnancy. And Evy, she absolutely adored it too! It was a wonderful experience that I will always cherish.
