What caught my attention even more in this book, which is beautifully illustrated with headings and sidebars lettered in pink to appeal to women and girls, is the wide variety of amounts and worth with which women's efforts are commercially rewarded.

Can you guess how much Margaret Knight, the inventor of the machine that made the first flat bottomed paper bags, was worth when she passed away?

Ever turned on your windshield wipers during a rainstorm? Mary Anderson designed the first windshield wipers, but she couldn't sell her invention to men. We learn in Girls Think of Everything that the patent for the seemingly worthless device expired. This is perhaps the weakest part of the book - we never find out how long she held the patent before it expired (it's only 17 years) or whether she made any money from it (it's implied that she didn't, but that might not be entirely true).

Nevertheless, you'll find the answers to the above questions and many more in Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women, which is truly a visual delight for a book of its kind!

I normally have a great affection for pretty much any book within this genre. The concept of women that history has forgotten? That really appeals to me! However, unfortunately, this particular one was disappointingly one-sided and presented a rather inaccurate impression. It seemed to suggest that the only women and girls who have been involved in inventing are white American ones, with the exception of Madam C.J. Walker who merely gets a brief mention in the introduction. There is even one instance where a woman basically plagiarized an idea from West African women!

It is of utmost importance to showcase the work of women in this area, especially considering that women continue to be underrepresented in STEM industries. Nevertheless, I would be rather hesitant to recommend this book to a child. I wouldn't want them to walk away from it with the incorrect belief that only white American women are capable of inventing things. It is essential to provide a more diverse and inclusive perspective to ensure that children understand the contributions of women from all backgrounds and cultures in the field of invention.

This book, which seemingly targets older children, presents a more text-heavy iteration compared to the recently published "Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed The World". Some of the trivia about each spotlighted woman is almost word-for-word. However, there are sufficient differences to render it a unique and inspiring read, especially regarding the reading level and depth of content.

While "Women in Science" zeroes in on the lives and discoveries of females in scientific arenas, "Girls Think of Everything" has a more general focus, encompassing not just scientific discoveries but inventions in general. The author guides the reader through the WHY behind the need for the invention and then their discovery process on HOW it actually came to fruition.

Another aspect that, in my opinion, gives this book extra points is not only the inclusion of the discoveries of adults but also those of girls who filed for patents on their own inventions (albeit far fewer than the adults listed). An added bonus is a brief overview of how the patent process functions, along with contact information in case the inventor in your life decides to take their sketches and dreams to the next level.

The front and back covers feature lists of women not necessarily covered in the text but which could serve as a starting point for further research into female inventors. A few other books are also listed as additional reading materials, and a very short sources section is included as well.

I absolutely loved this book.

Once again, from the perspective of my all-girl secondary school librarian, it was truly brilliant to learn about the numerous inventions for which women and girls have been responsible.

You might have heard that Mike Nesmith's (of The Monkees fame) mother invented Liquid Paper. However, here you also discover that in most of her early correspondence, Bette would sign her name as B. Nesmith. This was because she suspected that people would take her product and business more seriously if they thought a man was behind it.

The book was so enlightening, yet in some ways, it was quite sad.

I started to think about how much earlier some of these inventions might have come to fruition if gender had not been an issue.

I imagine there are some inventions that never went beyond a mere thought due to the potential obstacles in the way.

The book encourages the young girls of today not to be afraid to have a go.

Certainly, this is something worth doing across the board! :-)
