It is widely regarded as the most challenging Greek poet to translate. His works are characterized by being the most amphoric, the most rhetorical, and the most pompous within the entire realm of Hellenic literature. This stands as the sole unfavorable memory in my cherished classical studies. However, it is often said that one must hate a little in order to love a great deal. Perhaps this difficult poet is like a thorny rose, demanding and yet captivating. As I delved deeper into the study of his works, I gradually began to appreciate the hidden beauty and profound wisdom within the seemingly overwhelming complexity. It was through this process of grappling with the difficulties that I came to a greater understanding and, ultimately, a deeper love for the rich and diverse world of Hellenic literature.

2.5 stars.

This rating might seem a bit ambiguous at first glance. It could mean that the product or service in question has some good aspects but also has several areas that need improvement.

Maybe the quality is decent, but not outstanding. There could be some minor flaws or glitches that prevent it from receiving a higher rating.

On the other hand, it might also suggest that the overall experience was just average. It didn't really wow the reviewer, but it also didn't disappoint to the point of being a complete failure.

In conclusion, a 2.5-star rating indicates a middle-of-the-road performance. It has its pros and cons, and potential customers or users should carefully consider these factors before making a decision.

Pindar's odes in praise of winners of Panhellenic games in the early fifth century BCE offer a vivid and captivating look at Classical Greek culture.

These odes were not merely words but a reflection of the intense pride and admiration that the Greeks held for the victors. The games were of utmost importance in Greek society, and winning them was a feat that brought great glory and honor.

Pindar's poetry immortalized the achievements of these athletes, ensuring that their fame would endure through the ages. His words painted a vivid picture of the competitions, the skill and determination of the participants, and the joy and celebration that followed a victory.

By reading Pindar's odes, we can gain a deeper understanding of the values and ideals that shaped Classical Greek culture and the significance that was placed on athletic excellence.

An interesting collection of odes to various athletes at the Olympic, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmic games in Ancient Greece exists.

These games were of great significance in ancient Greek society. Although the athletes themselves are, for the most part, obscure to us today, the odes contain a wealth of excellent references and details of various Greek myths.

It is truly fascinating to think about how these odes would have been in the original language. The words must have been carefully crafted to honor the athletes and their achievements, while also incorporating the rich mythology of the Greek culture.

I can only imagine the beauty and power of these odes when they were first recited. They would have brought the stories of the athletes and the myths to life, captivating the audience and leaving a lasting impression.

Even though we may not be able to experience them in their original form, studying these odes allows us to gain a deeper understanding of ancient Greek society and its values.

I think these are made to be heard but not read.

Perhaps it was just the translation that made them seem less engaging when read.

When I was in the right mood for them, I did enjoy them.

However, at other times, it was a real struggle to keep going and make sense of them.

Nevertheless, I'm glad I have read them.

You really do notice how political they are in some cases.

This aspect actually brings them closer to us in modern times.

It shows that the issues and concerns of the past are not so different from what we face today.

I much preferred London mayor Boris Johnson reading an Olympic ode in Greek at the 2012 London games.

His performance added a touch of authenticity and charm to the event.

It was a memorable moment that I will always remember.

Overall, while these works may have their challenges, they also offer valuable insights and perspectives.

It's probably all very interesting if you're an actual scholar of Ancient Greece. They have spent years delving into the rich history, culture, and language of that ancient civilization. They can understand the complex political systems, the magnificent works of art, and the profound philosophical ideas that emerged from that time. For them, it's a world full of wonder and discovery.

However, for anybody else, it's pretty impenetrable. The language of Ancient Greece is difficult to learn, and the cultural and historical context is often unfamiliar. Without a deep knowledge of these things, it can be hard to make sense of the ancient texts, art, and architecture. It's like trying to understand a foreign language without knowing the grammar or vocabulary.

But that doesn't mean that we can't appreciate the beauty and significance of Ancient Greece. We can still look at the beautiful sculptures, read the inspiring myths and legends, and learn about the important events that shaped Western civilization. We may not be able to understand everything, but we can still gain a sense of awe and wonder at the achievements of this remarkable civilization.

“It’s fitting for a man to say good things about the gods, so the blame is less.” Pindar repeatedly emphasized that he was not a god and had no aspiration for immortality. His words carry a certain wisdom and humility. When it comes to his poetry, I can't help but express my admiration.

Other than the regret that only a relatively small portion of his works has endured over the past 2500-odd years, I truly have nothing bad to say. His poetry is like a precious gem, shining with unique luster.

It reflects the thoughts, emotions, and values of that era, providing us with a valuable window to understand the ancient world. Although time has taken its toll on his works, the remaining fragments still possess an irresistible charm. We can only imagine how magnificent and profound his complete body of work might have been.

Nevertheless, what has survived is enough to make us appreciate Pindar's talent and his significant contribution to the field of literature.

Five, ten, fifteen stars.

I give the Odes of this most melifluous of Greek poets save Homer, Pindar, the mouthpiece of the Muses.

I started reading this book perhaps in 2012 or '13, and it has taken me until now to finish it. Mostly because after reciting one Ode, especially one as overflowing with amazement as Nemea 11, or Isthmia 3 & 4, I had to set the slim volume of copious counsel down and let it simmer. Let the violet-shade of the Graces linger a little.

For background on the episodes of Greek lore (which is the main content of the Odes, not merely panegyrics), this is as good as it gets, once again save Homer. Sure, we may not know or care about the athletes the songs were commissioned for. But, honestly tell me you can't imagine some modern day prize fighter, or garlanded Quarterback, that wouldn't suit perfectly as analog and stand-in. The sheer joy that comes when wise counsel urging humility combines with the ecstasy of athletic victory is so abundant in these Odes. They may be my favorite poems ever.

Richmond Lattimore, the true blessed recipient of the Muses' cadence, renders the Odes in perfect measure. He is still pre-eminent among Greek translators. This edition is definitive and vital.

Pidar's Odes are indeed good reading materials. However, reading them in a continuous and unbroken manner can be quite toilsome. It is advisable to approach them in a more measured way. Instead of trying to devour a large number of odes at once, it is better to consume one or two at a seating. This allows for a more in-depth appreciation and understanding of each piece. Additionally, it is beneficial to read them along with other light fare. This provides a contrast and balance, making the reading experience more enjoyable and less taxing. By following this approach, one can truly savor the beauty and essence of Pidar's Odes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while Pidar's Odes offer great literary value, it is important to read them in a way that suits our reading habits and preferences. By reading one or two odes at a time and pairing them with other light fare, we can enhance our reading experience and gain a deeper appreciation for these wonderful works.
